Re:Software Friction on Tuesday June 18, 2024 @11:27AM (#40718927)
A lot of the friction mentioned in the article revolves around tooling. Anyone with more that a few days in an engineering org will witness this. What is not mentioned is human friction. Over simplifying but an engineers job is to write code and push to main. Anything that gets in the way of that I categorize as friction.
> And it's also a bit inconvenient that nobody else at work has such pressing obligations, it makes me feel bad...

I hope your peers ambivalence (educated guess here) towards your other responsibilities make your priorities obvious. Having been in a similar situation, I "lost" the corporate battle (was laid off) but as soon as I had kids I knew my priorities needed to change. I literally worked 8:30 - 5. That was it. I wasn't going to lose missing even the most mundane of times with my kids for some after hours "retro" or some early morning "pointing" session. Thats me tho, thats my deal.

I had a lot of success early on with a community of practice I started inside an engineering org but as time went on it morphed into a something different: A place to assign work outside an engineers day to day. I suppose thats a function of growth - people must always be working on something.

I started it with the intention of communicating architecture changes from consensus borne out of our weekly meeting. We got TypeScript into the codebase, React Query, talked about React Context and minimizing Redux. It was fun for a while. But then, was just another meeting where work was dolled out.

While maybe it does sum up our work culture it shouldn't influence how you work. Rarely have I seen someone who "runs faster" be more valued (monetarily or among senior peers) than someone who churns out quality and runs "a little slower".

Team is still very much a thing and if your team members are looking at each other as competition then that sounds like a culture thing, maybe the norm, still not acceptable.

I like this question. Do we then base the penalties purely on pain suffered by the scammed?
Re:Did Neanderthals make art? on Thursday September 22, 2022 @12:57PM (#32941585)
Our bias really comes out when we write doesn't it?

"I'm super smart and have good posture - hey look at this hunched over Neanderthal! And they're staring at a rock! Idiot"

Bias being those with bad posture and an affinity for staring has no imagination

I thought you were going to call this out. It should read "something more shallow"

Re:Using: Has() as a CSS Parent Selector and much more on Saturday August 20, 2022 @08:21AM (#32531492)
Rounded corners really were all the rage for a while and we needed support for it! I remember in the early days cobbling together elements with top-left, top-right, etc image slices. Want't really too long ago.. maybe 10 years?
Why are you assuming that our grandparents are pushing the narrative? Money / greed doesn't care about your age group.
Re:College Was the Biggest Mistake of My Life on Tuesday April 26, 2022 @11:16AM (#31168522)
It doesn't just stop at college tho. After college, you can obtain a ruinous loan for just about anything. At least with a ruinous college loan you should be able to "come out ahead" at some point. Ruinous home loan? Generally leads to foreclosure. Ruinous car loan? Repo man. Payday loan? Good luck!
Re:I'm a scam prevention expert and I got scammed on Thursday March 31, 2022 @04:16PM (#30871745)
Interesting. I would have lumped them all together. Why do you trust reviews on Target but not Amazon?
Re:Good leaders know you can’t fight reality on Sunday October 10, 2021 @02:55PM (#28820966)
I think as long as you think (know?) this is true the easier it makes dealing with work stress. "It has to get done or else" is so common in my place it falls on deaf ears with most the devs.

At my place, I think its more CYA than BS. "See VP Person, i said it has to get done or else!" so its not my fault!

Re:Facebook is nearing a reputational point of no return on Thursday October 07, 2021 @10:22AM (#28786634)
I have a 40 something friend who started working there a few years a go. He has a family. He mostly went for stability, good pay, good benefits, predictable long term outlook. Not working insane hours. He loves it. Actually said he feels valued as an engineer.
This is intriguing (and new to me). Can you point me to something you enjoy that I can look at? Not even sure what to search...
Re:A shot to prevent Lyme disease could be on its way on Tuesday August 17, 2021 @08:12AM (#28209012)
Definitely. I bought tick tubes which target the mice. I've had one on me since putting them out in late April. I think they're working but need more time to test.
Re:A shot to prevent Lyme disease could be on its way on Tuesday August 17, 2021 @06:38AM (#28208359)
My experience with ticks: Closer to the home is where you're going to find the small ones. I've had two on me. First one was easy to spot it looked like a freckle on my knee. The second one I felt the bite (thought it was an itch) and it was on my inner thigh. Not sure if I would have noticed the second one if it wasn't for its haphazard bite. Both latched on when I was in / near the garden.

This is the answer. Most of us are in the weeds throwing darts.

Re:Attack of the 50 foot Blockchain (2017) on Wednesday July 14, 2021 @11:01AM (#27833812)
I understand. Maybe the space will only truly realize its potential after the hype dies down. With coins so volatile probably wont happen anytime soon.
Re:Attack of the 50 foot Blockchain (2017) on Wednesday July 14, 2021 @10:30AM (#27833432)
You seem to think digital authenticity is not important. I'm on the fence but I think its too early to conclude. I didn't grow up in a virtual world but maybe to those who did the idea of digital authenticity is all that matters.

> these people just dont want to see something they missed out on succeed

Missed out on what profit? I've just started reading about Ethrereum and its still a baby. No one really knows what its going to grow into. But it reads much bugger than coins / NFTs when you start peeling back the layers. But people love blood and theres a lot of it in the coin / NFT space.

Same, but I don't get too much from it. If its not there I really don't care anymore and never ask for it. Whats the point of showcasing your github profile today? Little to no experience (entry level / jr) makes sense but for anyone else - don't fret.

"stars", at least from my perspective, doesn't map to usage. I've stared plenty of projects I don't use. I like the latter two metrics - thank you for sharing!

Re:Learn CSS on Friday May 21, 2021 @01:19PM (#27236977)
I've essentially made my career with CSS. I've been hired solely because of my CSS skills. I am continually surprised when I interview engineers proficient in Angular / React / JS but they cannot even do a basic full page layout (think header, footer, and two adjacent content areas in the middle ). Anyone starting from scratch to try to get a career in web dev become great at CSS - its a niche no one seems to want to learn
I have an M1 and I love it. Sure, there were some early issues like chrome crashing all the time and some packages not working but I haven't run into any issues as of late.
Re:Software development is a loser’s game on Thursday April 01, 2021 @11:55AM (#26662129)
Yep, totally agree. Writing quality code is always on my mind but when something needs to be delivered yesterday what are you going to do? Options are: delay the release or release it with the crap we wrote
