Re:Bear turns 10, and it still feels like day one on Tuesday November 03, 2026 @12:06PM (#50354666)
I thought this was about a literal bear. Then again 10 years is not much of an age even for a wild bear.
My understanding is that embalming is mainly an American thing, not a Western one. Caskets are also a lot cheaper around here (Austria).

Why do people still think they need to mess with scrolling on their websites?

>Perhaps for you, but I very much care about my laptop's size and especially it's weight, as I carry it around on a daily basis.

Thinner devices need more solid enforcement to stay stiff. My Thinkpad X60s weighs the same as a Macbook Air and it's infinitely more upgradable.

Well if dynamite fishers show up in your favorite fishing spot you might want to consider moving somewhere else at least.
Re:Reforming English Spelling on Friday October 23, 2026 @05:44PM (#50215801)
Random as in that's where Martin Luther came from.
If you're referring to the RIAA equalization curve[1] that is completely open and well defined.

German picked a random Central German dialect as Standard German and went with that.
Re:The Kevin Bacon on Friday October 23, 2026 @02:01PM (#50212984)
You forgot Lars von Trier
Re:The Kevin Bacon on Friday October 23, 2026 @01:45PM (#50212748)
Why not? He's been hugely active over a wide range of genres. He's the exact kind of actor I'd expect to be high up.
Re:The Kevin Bacon on Friday October 23, 2026 @01:35PM (#50212587)
I guess this is mainly about alive actors? Because for instance I'd expect Christopher Lee to be up there but he's not even in the list.
Re:I Love Software Rendering on Friday October 16, 2026 @10:03AM (#50118530)
If you want to have the true PSX gaming experience you can also round all vertex coordinates to the next pixel and force noperspective interpolation.
Viennese Fiaker horses are limited to 18 working days per month and there's already temperature limits. Whether those should be lowered further is up for discussion. the current limits for horses are already lower than for outdoor laborers in Vienna.

IMO completely banning horse carriages in Vienna is overshooting.

Re:Porsche Mission S on Friday October 16, 2026 @04:40AM (#50115798)
So is this an EV or an ICE car? The rev counter makes me think ICE?
Anthropic: "Oh no! Small (open source) models might self-replicate. Better ban those. :^)"

I wouldn't want to be hit by those headlights as a pedestrian..
Re:Every US Electrical Outlet Explained [video] on Monday October 12, 2026 @04:47AM (#50053364)
IMO they're completely overengineered. There's nothing useful they can do that schuko can't. (the built-in fuse and fixed polarity aren't useful)
>The Cray-1 team hopes to fill the currently empty second half of the tower through a crowdfunding campaign to secure 70–80 additional M4 Mac Minis. The goal: create a cluster capable of ranking on the TOP500 supercomputers list.

Is ~100 Mac Minis really all it takes to get into the TOP500 these days?

Re:The Nintendo 64 Partner-N64 Development Kit on Saturday October 03, 2026 @04:57AM (#49942510)
The article mentioned this needed a modified N64 to route the extra debug signals from the cartridge to the CPU. That got me wondering since afaik there are no unused cartridge pins on the N64.

Turns out it's actually a bit more complicated. The Partner-N64 uses some little-used analog input pins (LAUDIO, RAUDIO, VIDEO_SYNC) for this. The modification also requires cutting the lines to the system's DAC chip to work.

Re:Show HN: Raven – The harness of harnesses, built for RSI on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @03:24AM (#49905573)
You'd think everyone working in tech would be aware that RSI was a widely used acronym already.
Re:The Murky History of Soviet-Born Tetris on Saturday September 26, 2026 @05:26AM (#49854777)
The Game Boy version of Tetris was entirely made by Nintendo R&D1 in Kyoto. It only used the licensed concept.
Re:The Mafia may be keeping fentanyl out of Italy on Friday September 25, 2026 @11:40AM (#49846116)
Why do you keep using confusing abbreviations like that?
Millions per month is tens per minute. That doesn't seem like all that much to me?
I have yet to understand what the value proposition of an internet-connected refrigerator is.
Re:U.S. Small Biz Can't Ship to the EU Anymore on Tuesday September 22, 2026 @04:23AM (#49798101)
The PPWD is a terrible law and should have never been adopted in that form. FWIW the commission is rushing to fix it.[1] Their general guidance is also to ignore this for now but I can see small business being squeamish.

I thought we already managed to successfully cryopreserve and recover small rodents like hamsters in the 50s.

Re:Waymo in Singapore on Friday September 18, 2026 @03:58AM (#49751392)
I have to admit I haven't taken a taxi in Tokyo but my impression was that it was a fairly high-end service akin to London black cabs and relatively pricey.
Re:TSMC revealing details about next gen A14 node on Thursday September 17, 2026 @03:17PM (#49745279)
Come on we're in the 21st century, UTF-8 is pervasive. Just call it "Å14" node.
