But... why? </s>

This reminds me of C++ Template Metaprogramming (TMP) (it's Turing-complete so people wrote "games" that run at compile time). The same with TypeScript types, I think someone got DOOM running entirely in the TypeScript type system. An interesting tech demo but entirely superfluous.

Fun, but... how is this not already taken down by copyright strikes? I mean straight rips of audio assets, music, 3d assets, graphics, even the damn name...
Re:Apple HomeView on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @12:08PM (#50073983)
They're getting desperate for more user data... and the funny thing is folks will likely line up to buy and install this TeleScreen 84 in their home like they did for the original Alexa... we're all doomed.
Re:Pi.dev: You Said No MCP on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @11:29AM (#49910264)
This is good news, I like Pi with local models, but the MCP needing an external plugin and extra "discovery" proxies was never smooth.
This was the case for at least a year. I used to use AliExpress for affordable small electronics, and when this came into effect, it killed the whole thing (and my hobby, because no way I'm paying the Amazon or eBay tax).
This is confusing; what happens to you if you refuse a warantless search of your property?

I'm a US citizen returning home. Do they just... send me back out of the country? :) I don't suppose they'd have the grounds to arrest me since there is no law that I can see being broken. I suppose they could keep the device until such time that a warrant could be obtained to digitally search / break into the device (but that requires some reasonable suspicion - simply refusing a warantless search isn't it).

That's eerily similar to the argument used by mass surveillance systems like Flock around expectations of privacy in public.

Yes, it's fine if the little old lady around the corner writes down the color or plates of cars driving through the road a few hours a week, but no, it's totally not fine for an all-seeing, all-powerful entity to collect all license plates, and photos of drivers and passengers, with exact metadata to automatically process and sell that data for profit to anyone who would pay.

Re:Stopping the smart TV from being used against you on Friday August 28, 2026 @06:04PM (#49484787)
What search terms did you use? I'm in the US, can't find anything with an oled panel that's not a smart tv or a computer monitor.
Re:Stopping the smart TV from being used against you on Friday August 28, 2026 @05:38PM (#49484541)
Let me know when they (or anyone else) comes out with an oled model.
Re:M5Stack Launches PaperMono on Thursday August 27, 2026 @06:50PM (#49472291)
For the same ~ $55 as their lite model you get some other options:

slightly larger screen, plus a microphone and speaker: https://www.cnx-software.com/2026/08/05/zectrix-note-4-a-4-2...

same screen size with microphone and speaker, plus a magnetic fridge mount: https://www.cnx-software.com/2026/07/31/reterminal-sticky-3-...

I'd actually love something like the reTerminal sticky, but larger, for a fridge mounted home automation dashboard / calendar.

<s>Get the Flock out of here with those ideas, that's conspiracy thinking; those poor CEOs only want what's best for us</s>
Re:The turbulent AI era is here on Thursday August 27, 2026 @12:33AM (#49459737)
Nothing says "social change" like building a Flock of predictive-surveillance cameras capable of spotting the revolt before the flock even knows it’s a flock.
Re:France reaches 94.9% fiber coverage in 2026 on Wednesday August 26, 2026 @12:51PM (#49452220)
Damn, we pay $110 for 5Gbps in Seattle only because the 2Gbps would be $100.

Cellular plans are also a lot cheaper in Europe :(

Without access to the code, I imagine it'd be extremely difficult even with unlimited API calls to the watermarker.
I'm honestly surprised they don't upload the entire image to apply the watermark server-side, to the point that I'd like someone else to repeat this investigation and confirm it's not happening.

Shipping the watermark generator on user's machine would make it very easy for someone motivated to find how it works and write a "watermark remover".

Re:Apple Private Cloud Compute SoC 3 audit reports on Thursday July 23, 2026 @02:52AM (#49017804)
So Apple is publishing an audit of Apple private closed source components and declared them totally private... trust us bro.

I have absolutely 0 reasons to believe Apple Private Cloud is not a data extraction mechanism for the gullible. Unless I can manually inspect the source, or at least run the binaries on my own hardware that I can firewall and inspect the network traffic, I'm absolutely confident Apple steals all the data to build better ad targeting models, or to sell to the highest bidder.

Re:LG to ban residential proxies from smart TV apps on Thursday July 23, 2026 @02:29AM (#49017631)
Because... they want to corner that market opportunity themselves at the system level? I doubt it'd be anything less given LG (and other smart TV manufacturers)'s track record.
Good, do Apple next.
This website doesn't load on Firefox, it just refreshes continuously. I even tried turning off my adblocker and it still does the same thing.
Re:Microsoft Can Track Users via a Windows Device ID on Tuesday July 07, 2026 @11:45AM (#48819404)
Tangentially related to Device ID: Apple is significantly worse when it comes to machine identifiers; even with Autopilot enabled you can still install Linux on a Microsoft Surface device (or even Windows if you don't use a Microsoft Account). With MDM locks, Apple devices are literally bricks (especially since all ram and storage is soldered down and locked/paired to the secure enclave chip).
Re:Full Writeup of the Windows GDID on Monday July 06, 2026 @08:40PM (#48812329)
> The court record itself says a reinstall produces a new GDID

That's a half truth if I ever saw one. Telemetry also includes the hardware hash (which does use SMBIOS serial number, CPUID, TPM identifiers, etc.) and that one survives OS reinstalls and even hardware swaps. It is the underlying id used for things like Autopilot (the equivalent to Apple's remote MDM lock).

Yet layoffs excused by AI (expenses or claimed productivity gains) are continuing by the thousands each day, so... not sure what this is based on.
Re:Former Microsoft dev built a 2.5KB Notepad clone on Thursday July 02, 2026 @01:17PM (#48764526)
Sure, but it's basically a very thin wrapper on the built-in RichEdit control, with some added menus and niceties.

Don't get me wrong, it's hundreds of times better than whatever UWP abomination they call Notepad in Windows 11 nowadays (with logins and AI features), but it's not an actual text viewer / editor from scratch.

That's an ever-dwindling section of the population. Middle class and upper middle class is going away, we're very clearly heading towards ultra-polarization.
We're doomed if regular people have fully absorbed the propaganda to the extent that they'd think asking invalid hospital-bed-ridden people to work remotely for the uber-rich rather than fixing the tax situation so that those uber-rich can buy one less golden toilet for their private planes (and the state can provide for those poor people) is a good idea.
Holy dystopian shit, you might be right. This might just be their new favorite answer when people ask what are all the jobless humans to do after the AI takeover? This... live in squalor, hooked up to VR headsets and doing menial work remotely for the oligarch class, while the AI learns the last few non-automated tasks from them. It's a theme I've seen in many movies over the years.
You do realize the next step is ISP-level tagging of traffic? And VPNs are already being outlawed in much of the western world.

Unless you expect the teenagers to run underground mesh radio networks and risk FCC's hammer (real jailtime), it's just wishful thinking.

Re:Slate EV truck starts at $24,950 on Wednesday June 24, 2026 @12:26PM (#48662227)
This was posted about a year ago and it was complete vaporware, all pictures and videos were digital art.

And looking at their website now, I see the same thing unfortunately. Why would someone "preorder" a car that only exists as a prototype and digital art? What proven track record do they have of actually being able to manufacture these, and what independent outlets reviewed it?

I'm sorry, but a lot of red flags immediately pop up for me, I'm confident this is 99% a scam.

Since forever, that's literally their business model. My (and your) private information was leaked (unconsensually), including timestamped location, travel companions, photographs from inside your vehicle, what you're wearing, etc. all leaked / stolen and then publicized to all kinds of people (criminals with badges, Palantir, the secretaries in the city council, etc.).
