More likely craft looking to reduce heat seeking missles or detection. Think better heat diffusion on helicopter or tank exhaust. Fixed installations would use thermal nets or space blankets.
I wonder if the Flock contracts allow for the removal of equipment? The camera installation is generally incidental to the services provided. The contract might allow for the permanent installation while cancelation just terminates services provided.
"And that's before we talk about the security implications to existing systems still running XP."

And subsequent systems still using some of that code

There will be new apps. There are no incumbents for novel solutions.
Instead of making LLMs create scripts behind the scenes for what you want to do, it is more efficient to have LLMs use apps for you. Apps still make sense to me.
No. Especially for local elections I believe that both the search results and any AI summarization run a risk of mistaken identity. There often aren't enough results for a person in a local race and can pick up people with a similar name.
Generally agree. However, I wonder if their intent was to draw attention to women's rights, or antagonize people regarding women's rights, in those nations. Porn was the wrong choice. Instead of pet photos, they could have shown women in positions of power and not wearing tradional clothes.
You have the highest probability of earning $500/mo with a second job. Yes, your hours and rate provide an earnings cap, but we're talking about $500, which is low for a whole month even at minimum wage on weekends. Begging for money may not be as low risk as you think. It's also low probability for $500/mo as a side hustle.
For a while I worked weekends at a retail store for about $900/mo. It's not glamorous, but this is the highest percentage way get an extra $500/mo.

Time to build apartments over top of canals and rivers.

There's already rent control in the biggest areas. There's capital gains tax on rental property sold is almost 50% if held less than 20 years. Non-resident landlord tax is similarly high. French landlords still owe 30-45% on income, plus a 17% social charge.

It's not a surprise that if you tax something, the price usually goes up.

Re:French national assembly votes 0.055€/GB internet tax on Saturday October 31, 2026 @08:30AM (#50315555)
That still seems like a bad idea. Then you can't look at an individual's voting record to see what they supported. While many follow the party line, there is some variation with parties.
Nothing has to be collected. All they need to show is that she has some link to foreign government intelligence and attempted to do anything. Good chance she was an unregistered agent which is a violation.
Re:Hackers expose the identities of more than 40k DHS employees on Thursday October 29, 2026 @01:03PM (#50292352)
I get the concept, but the question then is if it's ethical to release those names when most of DHS has nothing to do with ICE. The age old question of how much collateral damage is acceptable. It seems most of the praise being given casts DHS as being similar Nazis, but doesn’t consider who is actually involved or not.
"...supply chain you can count on"

Except the components are mostly coming from China anyways, so the same disruptions are potentially in play.

Still, cool to see domestic options.

Re:Ask HN: What are your career plans in the age of AI? on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @12:00PM (#50275863)
SS will be "saved" as it's too political not to be. But I'm guess is they'll do that by increasing taxes and the money supply, causing the benefits to be worth little.

Also, the limit isn't weird when you consider it is intended to be a single payer system with a cap on the benefit.

Re:Ask HN: What are your career plans in the age of AI? on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @11:56AM (#50275799)
I have no career plans. I will work my job until I die or am fired. If I'm fired I'll end up working at walmart or something similar, at least until the cost of robotic replacements is low enough for them to layoff most workers. The future is bleak.
This is the opposite of what your prior comment said. Your prior comment says that exemption requests require approval regardless of the merits.
Can you provide an example? The undue burden, safety issues, etc tend to strike down most requests that are unusual.
That might not be reasonable to you, but that's completely different from the reasonable standard under the law.
Please provide some evidence for your claim. There are plenty of cases out there to show the opposite of what you claim.

We haven't been offloading thinking. We have been offloading the calculation. Someone had to think to implement a system in the past. The system abided by those constraints, or could be checked against them as it was deterministic (vast majority). AI is non-deterministic and presents a shift to where people are using it like a magic 8-ball to think for them, even if the mechanism is probablistic calculation of word patterns.
This is not true. The accommodation is only possible if it doesn't present undue hardship, safety concerns, etc. Plenty of accommodations can be denied on those grounds.
Lots of strawmanning going on with comments about where the line gets drawn and talking about driving stick, heating his home, etc.

If you read the article, you will see that the concern is with his direct actions concerning ethics and moral, especially with interactions with others (as an admin).

There is plenty to unpack with this as it is a new concept. I'm hoping we can have a real discussion about this. For example, will this religious exemption become moot if productivity is sufficiently higher with AI giving employers an easy out? If that does happen, do we think we'll see adverse effects such as baked in biases in a hidden process?

One thing I am concerned with with AI is that everything will follow Google and Meta when it comes to things like appeals and fair treatment. There area ton of stories about people getting banned/deleted with no recourse and no insight into why. I can see this same sort of totalitarian activity spreading to other aspects of life, like finance, medical billing, etc.

I'm surprised so many people miss this dynamic on so many topics. It's politics 101 to flip flop based on who gets credit, what the news cycle is pushing at that moment, which specific right/topic it applies to etc and then blame the opponent for the same action they themselves took or will take at another point in time. All the while the constituents argue about how their representative or party is somehow superior.
Re:Viral Polls Are Not Representative Polls on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @12:51PM (#50262001)
Isn't this the main concept of the Cambridge Analytica story - targeting people in the swing areas, and even based on personal information?

We're already here and I think personal informantion, behaviors, etc collected from social media and corporations would be the bigger threat than the polling itself.

Re:Viral Polls Are Not Representative Polls on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @12:45PM (#50261904)
They don't really check anything, do they? When there is a discrepancy between official results and polling, the general response was that the polling missed something, not that the official results were wrong.
Re:Virtual and Real World Combine at LAN Party (1998) on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @12:43PM (#50261871)
It doesn't seem like there are as many. Maybe it depends on location. Most of the ones I would go to were small, friends of friends type of things. I don't hear about anyone doing that sort of thing anymore. I'm sure most of the large organized ones are still around.
Re:Virtual and Real World Combine at LAN Party (1998) on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @12:44AM (#50254790)
'As critics tout dark visions of computers driving people apart, these hard-core gamers prove that communities--even virtual ones--need physical interaction in order to flourish. As the slogan of the Bay Area Network Gaming Group proclaims, “A scream should be heard, not typed.”

“The best game experience is not on the Net, and I think people are starting to realize that,” said Cliff Bleszinski, a lead game producer with Epic MegaGames. “You can’t look over at the person you just beat. You can’t go out to get a beer afterward. You rarely get to actually talk to the people you’re playing against. You may as well be playing against the machine.” '

The best part of this article. LAN parties seem almost extinct with the convenience of online gaming today. That's both a good and bad thing. I remember lugging a CRT TV and Xbox or a laptop to small parties. Usually with a case of mountain dew in tow. I miss the joy and adventure of playing in person. But I also enjoy connecting with people who have moved away in the comfort of my home. It makes me sad that the current and future generation won't get to experience this.
