Re:Linux 7.3 improves performance when running out of vRAM on Tuesday August 18, 2026 @08:05AM (#49344465)
macOS too sadly. by the time you realise there's a problem the machine is already comatose and unresponsive

all these electron apps and invisible virtual machines (looking at you Claude) really don't help.

Around my location (southern brazil) there are hundreds of species of stingless bees, living in colonies. Many (most?) produce honey too. I don't dispute that there are also lots of solitary bees. Bees are wonderful and way more diverse than people usually think.
OTOH, if said dump happens during working (paid) hours...
"Vocal fry", aka "creaky voice". It's stereotypically associated with irritating young women.

I like me a good rabbit hole that's interesting and also digs into stereotypes.

Turns out, like many memes, it's not just that. It's (also?) a normal speech pattern, used by different genders, ages, and social groups, in many languages.

This doesn't mean that vocal fry isn't used as social signaling. But complaining about it, well, isn't that social signalling too?

Re:Jolla phone – a full-stack European alternative on Monday March 02, 2026 @07:08AM (#47216968)
From what I understand it's the opposite, an android compatibility thing layered on top of a linux base.
My LG does just that.

The tv remote sensor stopped working (and broke again after servicing), so now the only way to use the TV is by the LG app on my phone.. which asks for permissions to Nearby Devices, Location, Camera, Microphone, Notifications, Phone, Music&Audio...

This remembers me of the Modbook, back in... check notes... 2008? I'm old. They would take a Macbook, re-case it and transform it into a tablet. Super cool. Looks like they kept doing this for a few iterations.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modbook

Not sure if it adds anything, but a factoid I know is that CD timing is expressed in minutes, seconds, and frames, where each frame is 1/75th of a second.

I'm not sure but I think this is also the smallest time resolution.

Then each frame is composed of samples, but they seem to be counted in groups of 1/75th os a second anyway.

for me 16gig is definitely not enough.

I'm on a 36gb M3 and I have to reboot it every three to five days to have it behave again.

I have normal dev apps open: a browser with jira, another with testing, another with documentation, an ide, teams, calendar, zoom.. it adds up very, very quickly. 16gigs are gone in the blink of an eye

adults passengers can adapt the conversation to your needs, keeping quiet and even helping with decisions. screens, kids, dogs, people on the phone, etc can't do that
Re:So you think you've awoken ChatGPT on Tuesday July 22, 2025 @11:57AM (#44648839)
Most times the idea is implied. I'm trying to solve a problem with some tools, and there are better tools or even better approaches.

ChatGPT (and copilot and gemini) instead all tell me "Love the intent here — this will definitely help. Let's flesh out your implementation"...

Re:So you think you've awoken ChatGPT on Tuesday July 22, 2025 @10:28AM (#44647337)
It's very hard to have ChatGPT et al tell me that an idea I had isn't good.

I have to tailor my prompts to curb the bias, adding a strong sense of doubt on my every idea, to see if the thing stops being so condescending.

Even worse: If you have any complaints, call a number we won't publish anywhere on our site and a robotic voice will just laugh at you.
Re:Someone at YouTube Needs Glasses on Wednesday April 30, 2025 @04:21PM (#43850220)
My YT mobile pet peeve is that when you toggle the captions, an useless "Subtitles/CC Turned ON" is shown for 5 seconds.. OVER THE CAPTIONS!

Most useless message ever, placed exactly where you do not want it to be.

Re:Mario Vargas Llosa, dies at 89 on Monday April 14, 2025 @09:28AM (#43681034)
Bolsonaro termed "far right" seems to be on the mark though. The guy praises military dictatorship, with many military figures in his government. He targeted the press and judiciary as enemies of the nation, and so on.

Lula hasn't nationalized industries, hasn't seized wealth, or even tried to, so "far left" doesn't seem to be as fitting. Where are the burnt churches?

Now, about corruption, I'm pretty sure neither shine, but that's Brazil for you. Wasn't the Bolsonaro family found to have bought around 50 properties in cash? Smells about as corrupt as the other side, sadly.

This would be interesting. And worrying. Laws are easy to write, regardless of applicability.

Re:A 10x Faster TypeScript on Tuesday March 11, 2025 @02:53PM (#43335816)
Agree. TypeScript is primarily a programming language. Did they make the language faster? No. Hence, the title is misleading.
Re:Why I Wrote Data Science for Crime Analysis with Python on Tuesday September 10, 2024 @11:36AM (#41501840)
Of course it is not that simple.

The more frequently you are stopped by the police, the greater the chance they will find something to charge you with. Since people of color are stopped more often by police, they face a higher likelihood of being charged.

macOS also does show desktop and apps for half a second when I reopen the lid, before falling back to showing the login prompt. super annoying. (M3 MacBook Pro, so reasonably new)
Re:Reservoir of liquid water found deep in Martian rocks on Monday August 12, 2024 @05:26PM (#41229511)
Water is used to displace debris and to carry it up to the surface.

A cylinder of 30cm diameter and 10km deep would hold around 700k litres.

+59% in 4 years is equivalent to 12% every year. percentages compound exponentially.

DNA analysis can be used to profile you. Health risks, ancestry, genetic conditions. This could be used to deny insurance coverages and employment opportunities due to perceived health risks.

DNA analysis is rapidly evolving to extract more information than you might initially assume. We don't know how much or how accurately DNA can be used do infer your preferences, moral instincts, aggressive tendencies, intelligence, propensity to fall victim of a scam, to become addicted, to act violently, etc.

DNA also provides insights into the genetic makeup of family members, which can face the same problems.

The association between your DNA and your name and contact details IS both sensitive and private though. Let's not be disingenuous: the dna companies don't just store dna snapshots. they store it along with a bunch of other data, ant this becomes problematic.

Maybe it leverages the "form" optional attribute that can specify the form the <input> element belongs to.

Re:The Price of Wheat on Saturday March 05, 2022 @12:54PM (#30569919)
Percent math doesn't work that way. Every country should produce an additional 1% of the whole world total. Very different from 1% of what they usually do, which is a fragment of the total.

mariadb is available in ARM and a drop-in replacement for mysql..
I haven't managed to find non-meme content on tiktok.. But I found that SponsorBlock and uBlock make youtube bearable
I think it's not the IMEI as on my imported phone I would see mostly local content. (and very bad content at that.. uninstalled after a while and never looked back)
