Highly recommend the photovore BEAM robot if you’ve got a soldering iron. It requires a small solar cell and a few analog components from online suppliers like Digikey.

Mark Tilden was the engineer behind this toy and many others like Robosapien.

Same, BEAM was my gateway to electronics growing up.
The overall site has a cozy feel to it. Well done

Re:Animated ASCII Art for Web Pages on Wednesday October 07, 2026 @12:48PM (#49995376)
Beautiful work. I did a similar effect for docs using a page turning animation. Might reach for this in the future.
Re:Better Icon and Label Alignment on Thursday September 17, 2026 @10:47PM (#49749662)
Recently found the lh unit approach. It’s elegant for centering icons along the first line in dynamic, sometimes wrapping text.
Re:Ask HN: What are you working on? (September 2026) on Sunday September 13, 2026 @10:00PM (#49690958)
I love the name and idea of the tiny cafe. Heads up on dark mode, the “Open My Tiny Cafe” button is white text on the gray background; a bit hard to read.

Temperature safety test was a nice touch; looks incredible.

I think AI has played a role in more analog hobby adoption.
Re:Building a backyard office, the build and cost breakdown on Tuesday August 25, 2026 @11:36AM (#49435925)
I've wanted to build one of these for a while just to have that "going into the office" feel even with WFH; appreciate the detail and breakdown. Also, lovely styled personal site.

Especially when writing about projects the author cares about. Surely it should warrant a human writing about the thing they built and are sharing with the world.

It’s probably a good filter too for applicants
Re:Perlin's Noise Algorithm (2023) on Wednesday July 22, 2026 @04:58PM (#49013332)
My intro to Perlin noise was a Stripe page where their customer wall of logos was floating bubbles. Not a video but actual DOM elements translating around. Stripe always going that extra mile.

Re:Show HN: One More Letter on Wednesday July 15, 2026 @08:19PM (#48928962)
The staggered entry animation of the letters on page load is lovely. The typing also felt rewarding.

Bit of feedback, should the timer pause when reading the how to play or opening settings?

Linear has an in-app changelog in the bottom right that doesn’t get in the way of work. It’s synced with their changelog on the website and can be revisited anytime clicking the help menu icon. Pretty elegant.

Some because of Codepen.io embeds? The ghost and pricing tables should work on their own.

Most hero sections in mid-2010s did not use CSS and JS animations to this extent. Video playback with an overlay gradient was one technique to animate a hero, but that's not the same level of quality and craft as moving DOM elements. IIRC BDC made these in vanilla (according to some design podcasts).

The Bitcoin page is another example of meticulous design work, remaking Vim in HTML here is crazy.

Their open-source page too. They go the extra mile here with JS game of life.

Animations are more prevalent today (see pages like https://linear.app), but these Stripe pages were shipped years ago and they still hold up.
