> Who is "we"? Every labor-providing human on the planet? When that many people are economically disenfranchised and you call them "entitled", the problem is you.

I'm speaking specifically about white collar workers in western countries. I don't believe they are economically disenfranchised at least not yet. We were behaving entitled-ly by not acting in unison with the other laborers who are economically disenfranchised. If you are some sort of exception forgive me but I doubt you were spending your money to build shared parks and teach programming to the children of Amazon drivers. Most white collar workers here are buying pickup trucks and living it up. Myself included. And now we are in the finding out phase of why that was bad.

Re:Fable Took My Job on Monday October 12, 2026 @04:56PM (#50062964)
I'll try to continue this in our other thread but the reason Sam is not suffering is that we don't protest like the French or punish the wealthy for their transgressions. I believe for example it would be reasonable for altmam to be jailed for cyber crime and open ai dismantled to pay for damages they have caused but that won't happen.
Re:Fable Took My Job on Monday October 12, 2026 @04:47PM (#50062847)
I don't really disagree with anything you've said here except the last bit.

We are being entitled. We shouldn't have been sucking at the investors class teet thinking we are special. We along with most white collar workers on the west were being entitled and complacent. My point of view is very far from tough luck.

Re:Fable Took My Job on Monday October 12, 2026 @04:43PM (#50062782)
Yes of course I am rich and when my grandparents passed I cackled with joy because it happens to other people but not me. I am glad you have determined my type.
Re:Fable Took My Job on Monday October 12, 2026 @04:34PM (#50062664)
I think you are not understanding my premise. I get that my words can sound harsh but someone discussing tough facts doesn't make them your enemy. You can be upset and maybe you should be I'm not one to decide here. What I am stating isn't some fancy eastern enlightenment its logic that most of us in the west ignore.

Being a software engineer professionally in call it 1990 thru 2020 is an incredibly privileged position. We were only able to enjoy such an easy position in life because of supply and demand and the math has changed. We had these positions not because we were special but because investors could make money off of it and needed us.

Suddenly they don't. Or believe they don't. Should we be pissed. Probably. But it doesn't change the fact that we got cozy with things that were revokable.

Re:Fable Took My Job on Monday October 12, 2026 @08:30AM (#50055460)
Yes. Much like 90% of the world there is nothing special about you that guarantees easy "creatively fulfilling" work.
Re:Fable Took My Job on Monday October 12, 2026 @08:27AM (#50055422)
Yes. The problem here is cultural and most westerners feel:

- It is reasonable to expect a nice comfy desk job with little stress where they get paid well to explore an interest they have. We are all moderns Thomas Edisons no?

- It is unexpected, undesirable and perhaps objectively bad to not live a life without struggle. I bet most westerners would not sit home in poverty and then fly after years to be with their loved one who has struggled to become a cook or delivery person.

For context I say this all as a westerner who tries to shake this mentality. We don't need all of this supposed comfort we only are addicted to it.

Doesn't work right on my phone.

Re:GrapheneOS' rewritten Messages app is released on Friday September 11, 2026 @06:21PM (#49666204)
This is somewhat true. I expect more regressions from released commercial software.

I suspect there are fewer regressions per release on graphenes alpha messenger than there are in googles message's app.

If you look at the history they have been working on this for a few months. The announcement probably was tied to this public release being cut for testing.

Re:Thanks FedEx, This Is Why We Keep Getting Phished (2024) on Tuesday August 04, 2026 @10:27PM (#49177880)
Twenty or so years ago I ordered wheels and tires from tire rack dot com and as I was in college had them delivered to my parents house. The FedEx driver proceeded to roll them down the driveway and into my parents siding scraping up my new wheels and causing about 20k in damage to the siding.

They seem to have improved so much in that time.

Going to test this out. I've been very happy to see the number of new apps being developed to be installed on android via obtanium and away from the Google app store. I assume it's llms enabling folks to get quick apps out.

Re:Emacs Is a Lispboard on Thursday July 23, 2026 @03:37PM (#49026930)
Nearly 40 years of stuff.

People iterating on a problem space over time is the best way we have found to improve things.

The JS ecosystem is not that old and also attempts to solve hundreds of unrelated problems like running software without peoples consent.

It's more than just the battle testing. Things that are not wanted by a community or by users are not important. AI delusion memes are fairly reductive but a commonality I see in many overtly ai evangelistic groups is an urge to build without motivation and agreement. The yes we can answer AI gives to user's every question is a failure mode trigger. LLMs are missing the filter an engineer with a human body may give you to an idea...

- Why would we do that?

- This seems pointless.

- This is fucking dumb.

Re:Why American ambulance rides are so expensive on Friday July 10, 2026 @08:33AM (#48859011)
>> He could have refused the second ride. You can refuse transport or medical care at any time as long as you are able to make rational decisions.

Disagreed. Someone who is cogent and not intoxicated and not a stroke victim can't always make the best choices. Your decision making can be compromised by I dunno the fucking pain of a broken toe bone.

Seeking help should not be interpreted as a sign of weakness and made into a maze where only the most rational can escape with minimal bills. The longer we leave this cognitive dissonance where the land of the free roughly translates to land of the free to get fucked we are going to continue to have instability.

Secretaries weren't invited to one on ones and interviews generally. This was something for only the highest places employees and not say something an IC would be used to.

Hence the engineers all going Wtf
