News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

The TZ db team have been aware of this since the first announcement in BC.

That said, operating systems need to get the correct files in place.

Same here. Nor have I heard of Railway.

Re:Will AI kill us all on Thursday October 08, 2026 @08:27AM (#50005002)
I am old enough to remember the Cold War and the quite plausible risk that civilization would be wiped out by nuclear war.

This is similar except the people warning about nuclear weapons are eagerly soliciting venture capital to build more of them.

Would you consider Burgundy at the time part of France?

Very cool images!

What lens are you using? Does it have to cover 135 format?

Are you asking for humanity to be wiped out so you can win an argument on the internet?
Re:How Europe is killing makers and micro-entrepreneurs on Monday August 24, 2026 @09:41AM (#49419656)
Unfortunate choice of words, implies these people are being literally murdered...

"Neither Holy, nor Roman, nor an Empire" -- Voltaire, allegedly.
Re:Sick leave: Germany rising but not the worst in Europe on Saturday July 04, 2026 @03:28PM (#48788177)
Since the late 80s, Sweden has a system where on the first day when you're off work due to illness, you're not paid ("karensdag").

I started working just before this system was put in place, and there was so much sick leave claimed that people were seriously wondering why Swedish workplaces were so unhealthy. A year after the reform, the numbers fell precipitously.

Maybe the drunken sysadmin had a more classical or historical education than most.

The creators of this app either didn't watch Evangelion or are huge fans. Hard to say which.
Dubai's brand (before the war) was "you're welcome to come here to make money, but criticize the government and you're out". I'm sure there's a ton of young influencers who don't know the first thing about the place to not have internalized it, but I remember a spate of articles and books about 15 years ago of Westerners falling afoul of the local laws and losing everything.
Finally someone taking AGI x-risk seriously.

Re:Number in man page titles e.g. sleep(3) on Wednesday April 08, 2026 @07:58AM (#47688987)
GNU has its own documentation format called 'info'.

> (... less common section numbers)

One very important section number is 5 - it's for file formats. So if you forget the crontab format, you need to invoke `man 5 crontab` to read about it.

The "cathedral" in ESR's essay wasn't proprietary closed source, it was the GNU project.

Surprisingly light though...

There's also the possibility that we, as consumers, demand that the political system solves this issue with robust privacy legilsation that prohibits any entity from tracking our phones.
Re:The Physics and Economics of Moving 44 Tonnes at 56mph on Thursday February 26, 2026 @07:36AM (#47165200)
Argh the liberal admixture of different units (mpg, kg, L, hr) in the first table really brings home that this is a UK piece.
Re:Who smeared Richard Feynman? (2014) on Wednesday February 11, 2026 @09:47AM (#46975602)
Would Teller have had to mail Hoover though? Or just let the concerned people know that Feynman was unsuitable.
Re:.Beat Swatch Internet Time on Tuesday February 10, 2026 @05:23AM (#46957719)
The swatch.com website still shows @beats in the upper left corner.

I am unsure whether Swatch still markets watches with digital displays.

Re:Review of 1984 by Isaac Asimov (1980) on Friday February 06, 2026 @05:51AM (#46911322)
I have read a lot of Asimov. That's why I said there's better stuff out there.

Even his contempories were better - Bester and Simak run rings around him.

Re:Review of 1984 by Isaac Asimov (1980) on Friday February 06, 2026 @03:42AM (#46910491)
Or don't. There's so much more better SF out there.
