Fuck Google, seriously. Avoid as much as possible.

Once the rest of those talks are published on YouTube (usually in a couple of weeks), you’ll see that there were some other talks that were much better about conveying a nuance in a balance between the tension of “AI can do everything for me, let it write machine code” and a session titled something along the lines of “your code base is your prompt“.

One presentation, I think it was my favorite one, talked about how an LLM had a very difficult time understanding what happened in a class when the name of the class was poorly descriptive of that class behavior.

Good quality code still matters. The LLMs are based on language! Human language!

Sketching and drawing are also great for flow.

If you think you are a terrible drawer, check out “Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain”.

I always enjoy stories about governments adopting open source and moving away from US big tech.

“Cloud-based”.

What happens when the cloud services experience an issue?

This seems like a bad idea in general.

Re:Framework Laptop 13 Pro on Wednesday April 22, 2026 @12:06AM (#47858851)
I’ve been on Fedora Gnome but wonder if I’d like Plasma. I know that I can try it on a USB stick and I’ve also read that other people have made sure to install their operating system and their files on different partitions to make distro switching easier.
Re:Framework Laptop 13 Pro on Wednesday April 22, 2026 @12:04AM (#47858837)
Yeah, last June. I switched from an M1 Air to a 13”, 7640U.

I’m running Fedora. Other than some h265 and heic codec/file format issues, (I’ve had to convert videos and photos to more open codec/format), it’s been a great machine.

I miss the battery life of the M1 but I enjoy the comfort of knowing I can upgrade storage or fix anything I want when needed.

Other than personal web browsing, I do web development and tinkering with music creation (Bitwig).

I don’t think I’ll ever buy another Apple machine. I want to use devices that are repairable, support those companies, and use software that is open source or multi-platform without continuing subscriptions.

Now that I’m personally invested in Linux, I’d like to contribute to desktop app projects that are open source since now, I am also a user.

I have gradually been moving my digital life away from Google and Apple/iCloud.

Sounds like I should upgrade to the $100 subscription in support on Anthropic.

Can you use all the labeling and other features in Thunderbird?
Dark Money has nothing to do with being able to consolidate power, gerrymander, and reduce the system to a two-party system whose members seem to be mostly under the influence of their own desire for gain? Which brings us back to the money…
Re:Repaste Your MacBook (But Don't) on Friday July 11, 2025 @11:09PM (#44538971)
Oooorrr…

Next time buy a Framework 13.

Why is a Blackhawk helicopter Performing a “training flight” at night very close to DCA?

Amazon suuuuuuuucks.

“… the rest is developers wanking off …”

Hahaha this made me chuckle out loud.

Re:New iMac with M4 on Monday October 28, 2024 @10:29PM (#41978780)
Apple doesn’t excite me anymore.
Re:Once You Try a Four-Day Workweek, It's Hard to Go Back on Monday October 21, 2024 @09:48PM (#41910385)
Duh
That’s hilarious. Maybe there’ll be an episode in some show a decade from now, inspired by this.
Four years is enough time to figure this out, but I still wonder whether it will actually be enough time for Los Angeles to figure this out.

Why not start today on making Los Angeles less car dependent and more mass transit oriented?

This is the DREAM.

Re:Kanban vs. Scrum: What's the Difference? on Saturday July 06, 2024 @12:28AM (#40888167)
Kanban: See tasks that need to be done, do them and drag them to done.

“Scrum”, has turned into a ridiculous mess of meetings and estimation when we’re always bad at estimating. Then there’s the attachment to the “two-week” sprint and velocity blah blah blah.

It’s usually always frustrating.

I prefer Kanban.

Re:Ask HN: What is the best code base you ever worked on? on Saturday June 29, 2024 @03:06PM (#40832714)
This sounds like wonderful! Maybe one day I can have a few of these “babies” that I can lovingly raise, providing joy to both the dev and the customer.
Re:Understanding React Compiler on Saturday June 29, 2024 @01:02AM (#40827986)
I’ve worked with React, plenty of years. I haven’t had to touch it in months and don’t want to.

Seeing JSX and reading about all the complexity in this post makes me hope I’ll never use React again.

BTW I do like JavaScript.

Re:Mozilla.ai did what? When silliness goes dangerous on Wednesday June 26, 2024 @11:20PM (#40806866)
Agreed. Not sure why author is so enraged.
Re:Mozilla.ai did what? When silliness goes dangerous on Wednesday June 26, 2024 @11:19PM (#40806864)
Why is this author so mad?
Imagine being the company that people hate, but feel the need to keep using said companies software simply because of market dominance.
Re:Apple's On-Device and Server Foundation Models on Tuesday June 11, 2024 @12:41AM (#40642420)
Yeah it was close to “infomercial” levels of cheesy.
This thread makes me happy I didn’t learn to make iOS apps.
Can I set my region to another country?

Sideloading should work for someone who used a phone without an Apple ID (if that’s possible)
