this is the answer, Stremio is the easy-to-use solution that I setup for my parents and forgot about. the comments above with their complicated usenet setups reminds me of the famous hackers news comment when dropbox was released.
should you not have disclosed that you're a Hex employee in the blogpost?
poor dang
everyone giving their opinion in this thread should disclose whether they've tried cocaine. proper fishscale cocaine, not stepped on washing up powder.

the problem is it's too damn good. way too addictive and harmful

Re:Someone is pretending to be me on Wednesday September 28, 2022 @04:23PM (#33012789)
all things aside, it'd be a great ego-boost if someone thought me good enough to impersonate on Upwork
Re:Chess is just poker now on Monday September 19, 2022 @11:47AM (#32899938)
surely they're talking about the opening only, where the best moves have been analyzed to death. once you're in the middle game and it's a position that's new, you play the best moves.
Re:The spam on Twitter on Wednesday September 14, 2022 @03:15PM (#32841917)
I wouldn't be surprised if someone responsible for verifying accounts in Indonesia took a bribe.
so Apple and Samsung get most of the profits, and Google has to pay a huge fine for doing the open source thing and letting 3rd parties build handsets. If Google just built their own handset, kept Android closed-source and charged €800 a phone, the EU would have no problem with that but we'd all be worse off.
Re:Cheating at chess with a computer for my shoes on Tuesday September 06, 2022 @08:37AM (#32736266)
That's a serious lichess rapid rating. Are you a titled player?
> What is broken is installing a custom CA into the system store on a rooted phone and making it work with all apps (apks) and Chrome.

yep, that's what I do. still seems to work here though. I'm scared to reboot

so this breaks charles proxy HTTPS sniffing as well? I haven't encountered the problem yet even though my Android Chrome is version 101
Re:A project with a single 11,000-line code file on Sunday April 03, 2022 @07:30PM (#30901839)
Surprised nobody's mentioned the Telegram Android app yet. Their ChatActivity.java is 27, 720 lines! https://raw.githubusercontent.com/DrKLO/Telegram/master/TMes...

Thing is, there's a great knowledge of the Android OS in there and the app works great when I use it. I think the OP blog post is correct 'Users don't care about the technologies or code.'

I always wonder why Google don't start charging for Gmail accounts for non-OECD countries or other countries where the ad rate means they make a loss.
> You'll rarely win in the court of public opinion and you'll probably never get hired anywhere again

I thoroughly disagree with both these points.

I'm kind of shocked, I know Gates was a ruthless businessman but I always had him pegged as squeaky clean in his private life.
Was this because license revenue dropped? They want to do the same in Ireland
Re:LiveLeak shuts down after 15 years online on Wednesday May 05, 2021 @10:33PM (#27058510)
It taught me to never get involved in the drugs business in Mexico or Brazil or never drive in Russia.
Re:LiveLeak shuts down after 15 years online on Wednesday May 05, 2021 @10:31PM (#27058505)
I notice Ogrish.com redirects to this new vanilla site as well. What a relic from the turn of the century Internet.
Re:Bill and Melinda Gates Separated on Monday May 03, 2021 @09:57PM (#27033266)
the youngest is 18 now. maybe the marriage is gone for years and they were waiting for the kids to come of age? pure speculation
Re:Tracking the WhatsApp habits of random smartphones on Wednesday April 21, 2021 @11:03AM (#26890578)

Same in my country, I don't think Americans (or the American tech culture) realise how ubiquitous WhatsApp is in Europe and around the world.

Re:Daily Mail owner sues Google over search results on Wednesday April 21, 2021 @10:45AM (#26890313)
I like it as well, whenever there's some breaking story of some scandal and I want to see 'pics', DailyMail always seem to have the pics first. Like a kid, I look at the images more than I read the articles.
Re:The Story of the SolarWinds Hack on Sunday April 18, 2021 @12:17AM (#26849762)
I think they compromised Teamcity, or at least I've heard a lot of mentions of Teamcity related to this hack, I could be completely wrong. But it's possible they just got admin access to the Teamcity build server and added their code just before the build was deployed. So not really compromising the compiler per se
Re:A New Standard for Mobile App Security on Thursday April 15, 2021 @12:49PM (#26822947)
New Google accounts start off with little trust. New apps start off with little trust. Established apps should have good trust along with Playstore verified developers. Android is destroying a lot of great file manager apps with the new scoped storage. These are great apps that have been in the store for 5 years plus. Surely these can be trusted.

Of course, there'll be ways around this but it would stop a lot of dodgy apps. Of course, this is a lot harder as it sounds as you'd need all Android apps that want access to sensitive APIs to interact with the Playstore API. But it's better than Android just imposing systemwide security changes that break a load of apps.

Re:A New Standard for Mobile App Security on Thursday April 15, 2021 @10:13AM (#26820756)
We don't need a security standard for apps from bluechip companies, we need better vetting of apps uploaded by nobodies to the app stores. And the Chrome plugin store while we're at it. I always thought Google should have a score system for Android developer accounts. You need to earn trust to have access to sensitive Android APIs.
Looks great but these services have a tendency to come and go. Bad actors just end up hammering it. But I've been using icanhazip.com for years and it's still going strong.
I wonder are they doing this because of a resources issue; do including all the unique words put too much of a hit on their servers and it's way cheaper to give generic results?
so do i, and you look at related searches and adding wiki is the top one. surely this is a signal to Google?
I wouldn't object to all product review searches to be Google ads now because it's all spammed anyway
Wasn't there a thread on this just yesterday?
Re:We created a fake language to root out resume liars on Wednesday March 10, 2021 @09:31AM (#26411567)
James Damore must have read that book as well, he lied on his CV saying he was a FIDE master.

I'm always fascinated at the esteem chess is held in for some reason. I don't have a high rating (lichess rapid ~1900) but to me, improving at chess is the same as improving at everything else: practice.
