I have not updated my website in 2 years but wrote one.

https://geekodour.org/docs/colophon/

looking back I do feel i've been oversharing things but here goes nothing.

atleast tell what to amazon search for
the fact that these tools enable a developer to do all these things are an attribute of the tool and not the user imo. so i guess just look out for people who and learn quickly and ramp fast, nice to work with etc etc.
Re:Web3 Onboarding Was a Flop – and Thank Goodness on Sunday July 06, 2025 @11:14PM (#44486422)
Absolutely not a crypto person but I've been following this team called noice.so, so far I think they've been doing the right thing in the space, pretty new and think they are operating at the right level of abstraction.
Just wanted to confirm something, this only works for HTTP right? browser dont allow arbitrary TCP reqs right?
This paper, and solutions such as sqlcoder, and https://doris.apache.org/zh-CN/blog/Tencent-LLM etc. Which let you query DB via natural language etc.

But recently there has been a surge around MCPs being able to query databases provided the n-number of MCP servers popping up. An example: https://www.reddit.com/r/ChatGPTCoding/comments/1jd9lfa/lear...

So I was wondering of things like the Doris blogpost, this paper and sqlcoder are still relevant/what extra does this approach offer vs trying to build a over mcp?

put this prompt and share the response:

You summarize the past convestion in this thread. - Start with a overall summary in a single paragraph - Then show a bullet pointed list of the most interesting illustrative quotes from the piece - Then a bullet point list of the most unusual ideas - provide a longer summary that covers points not included already - Finally, Step by step/phase by phase understanding of the ideas discussed above

Re:Autodesk deletes old forum posts suddenly on Thursday January 02, 2025 @01:07AM (#42572111)
algolia has done the same for their discourse forum, moved everything to discord and removed all old posts.

Upon asking this was a response from the team: "The Discourse content is no longer available. Much of it was 5+ years old and no longer reflected current SDKs and APIs. We're glad to help you here."

https://ibb.co/3htkxjv https://discord.com/channels/1171089640443367494/12783186879...

people were unhappy obviously. I really don't understand this decision by them.

Hi Jeremy, I am trying to navigate the space and trying to understand what fits where.

Could you shed some lights on what parts of bge-m3 would modernbert overlap with or would this is comparing apples to oranges?

Re:Best practices for financial modeling for a startup on Monday October 14, 2024 @11:23AM (#41838372)
i don't know but i think the answer should some combination of google sheets/excel. any guides around that would be helpful. I think i would just want to use gsheet at this stage.

shameless plug

wrote a elaborate doc on using wal-g on nixos, might be useful if someone finds themselves in same boat. has some catches.

Re:Ask HN: How to Improve Memory? on Friday September 27, 2024 @05:26AM (#41668037)
this is the bellcurve meme, only think has worked for me is note taking and making it easy for me to recall when i forget. I've accepted that I've bad memory and I just try to work around it, but i agree with the other comment in this thread about practice, once you practice enough it becomes sort of can switch to that way of thinking and usually that puts you in sort of the right path to recall the right thing. all this is just personal experience.

https://geekodour.org/docs/documents/notetaking/

edit: i still haven't figured out how as a kid i could remember whole chapter literally word-by-word but now I can't even properly remember a phone number. hah.

Re:Ask HN: Where are you hosting your Postgres database in 2024? on Saturday September 14, 2024 @08:35AM (#41539414)
awesome to know! but disabling rls and the data api does sabotage the use of supabase auth right? (in ref. to my previous message, just confirming if my checks were correct) i actually just wanted to use supabase because how convient it was for the entire auth flow. password email, reset etc. having to manually built a ui for it is out of question but the solution I am using right now (ory/kratos) has some cli utilities so that helps but still not as good as supabase auth ui ofc. keep making it better!
Re:Ask HN: Where are you hosting your Postgres database in 2024? on Saturday September 14, 2024 @04:16AM (#41538313)
I meant while using the db, i want to use sqlc and pgx with the postgres db instead of supabase api(s) that should work out right? i haven't tried but i think that should work ootb.

edit: yes that should be possible that's what op mentioned

quick aside note: i heard great things about supabase and wanted to use it for auth. I wanted to maintain my own db, user tables etc.

but using supabase for auth, this means if need to play w RLS but i had a very simple db design and didn't want to include rls yet. supabase won't let me do it afaik.

so i switched to using ory/kratos ultimately.

also q, how heavily are we dependent on supabase ecosystem if all we want is the db?

Re:Ask HN: Programmers Who Want to Get Better at Math on Wednesday September 04, 2024 @01:18PM (#41448191)
i have my own syllabus kind of thing curated: https://geekodour.org/docs/updates/syllabi/#hb03-get-back-at...

i don't think my math problem is new. i remember after one summer vacation(we used to get one full month break in school during summers) after summer vacation i totally forgot how to do subtraction, i had difficulty subtracting 2 digit numbers. this was around 8th standard.

later this problem came up in other areas, i catch things pretty quickly but forget them faster! so the way i am currently approaching math and other problem solving is i keep in touch with everything very casually by doing minimal practice and this is good enough for me for now whenever i need to jump into more advanced stuff.

plus chatgpt/claude has been a lifesaver in this regard related to concepts but I don't think anything can beat the intuition that comes from practice. I've heard good things about math academy but idk if it'll be good for me as I don't like to do "math" on the computer and don't like quizzes much.

Re:Ask HN: What to build (to get excited again)? on Wednesday September 04, 2024 @05:22AM (#41443578)
explore things outside tech, see what kind of problems attract you intrinsicly, explore it through trying to understand the problem/building the solution using programming as a tool.

this method had me explore deeper software engineering problem trying to solve every stuff. Since there's no deadline you can do it recreationally.

For a feel of recreationally, I really like this tscoding yt channel stream, he does long videos, pretty calming to watch.

i haven't made much yet but ig, just don't give up and keep trying and on the side keep an eye to see what works etc. why complicate things, i don't think there's a formula. it's only fair for you to understand the rules of the game after you played it enough times etc.

hi pfraze, can u tell us a bit more about the golang event stream? does it also trigger the computation of the views periodically?

more precisely wanted to understand how do you generate the event stream from sqlite

Re:Ask HN: Strategies for local backups of cloud data? on Friday August 30, 2024 @11:31PM (#41406377)
i think rclone is what you need. but for "backup", check restic. i personally use restic to backup all my stuff to b2 using restic's encryption.

have a checklist kind of a thing here if it helps: https://geekodour.org/docs/tools/homelab/#backup-plan I've not updated it in a while my setup has diverged since

wait so if i understand you correctly,

1. aider makes some change 2. aider then tells itself to use pexpect to check what changes it made 3. pexpect runs, opens browser somehow captures error messages if any and feeds that back?

i am pretty sure i misunderstood something

So the model here is, first it gets uploaded to a staging bucket, a lambda/callback checks the validity of the file and then puts it into a safe bucket of which content I trust to put in my server(backend)
ah apologies again, for this specific one i meant where users from the internet are allowed to upload to. (i am using presigned urls)
apologies my bad. I mean someone uploading a malicious pdf as user input. I am talking beyond calmav and flietype checking, to check if its a valid pdf.
what's a good tool to check if a pdf is not tampered with eg. as a tool to check before loading a pdf from a public bucket to your backend application?
Re:How to Get or Create in PostgreSQL on Monday August 05, 2024 @08:50AM (#41160896)
at one point i was using upserts for everything but then had a case where it was impossible to get it working with generated id.

wrote about it very roughly here https://blog.geekodour.org/posts/upserts/
