Re:A Wikipedia editor's long-running campaign on Sunday May 20, 2018 @10:11AM (#17112760)
No..if there really is a problem with his edits, there'll be a discussion and he'd be banned from that topic, which does happen (e.g, the top editor to the Donald Trump article also has 1800 edits to it but is indefinitely banned from that topic). That is far better than having this easily abusable system.

"Poll: Democrats more likely to believe allegations of sexual misconduct" that's the title of the article..
Re:Time Person of the Year 2017: The Silence Breakers on Wednesday December 06, 2017 @10:33AM (#15861800)
I would say the person doing the sexual abuse is clearly the worst person and the clear bad guy- yes people shouldn't enable them, but not cancelling a contract or something like that is not the same as doing sexual abuse. And it's not like cancelling the contract would've prevented the abuse.
Re:Time Person of the Year 2017: The Silence Breakers on Wednesday December 06, 2017 @10:31AM (#15861785)
Ah yes, as we all know all sexual assault is equivalent touching a knee. And no one faces harassment after putting their story out. No one.
Re:Time Person of the Year 2017: The Silence Breakers on Wednesday December 06, 2017 @10:29AM (#15861763)
What do you mean by 275 seats..? EC votes or what? The polls were pretty accurate - they tightened to 3ish% in the end IIRC and she won by 2%.
Re:Time Person of the Year 2017: The Silence Breakers on Wednesday December 06, 2017 @10:25AM (#15861719)
I was going to say something about partisanship, but Republicans are also less likely to believe allegations in general - even say the one against Conyers, 39% of dems believe it vs 32% of republicans. I don't think it's to do with the denial though - trump did initially admit to his, and 34% of republicans believe in his allegations vs 30% for moore. https://www.politico.com/story/2017/11/29/sexual-misconduct-...

While I think having more trees is good, I wonder if those trees and grass could lead to problems in the concrete and asphalt.
Re:Are EV certificates worth the paper they're written on? on Wednesday December 06, 2017 @09:40AM (#15861317)
At least for top 10 websites, would I not be able to prove that google is responsible for everything on their site?
Re:Show HN: Discover, Listen and Discuss Classical Music on Wednesday December 06, 2017 @09:39AM (#15861306)
Haha I just clicked the random button for masterpiece and it gave me Mozart's Requiem. I was looking at the recommendations based on the pieces I chose anyhow. I personally like to listen to various pretty obscure pieces by composers I like (dvorak's symphonies 1-4), and don't really go by genre, period etc. Maybe others will find it useful
Re:How to Build a City That Doesn’t Flood? Turn It into a Sponge on Wednesday December 06, 2017 @09:32AM (#15861259)
I wouldn't say that. Cities were built next to rivers and seas because they provided ways of transport, water, and places to dump waste etc. You can't build a city inland without a lot of trouble. But rivers and oceans flood and have hurricanes..
Re:How to Build a City That Doesn’t Flood? Turn It into a Sponge on Wednesday December 06, 2017 @09:18AM (#15861164)
It's mostly I think the limit of how fast the ground can absorb water after it has passed through the pavement. If the water rises through the pavement..
Re:How to Build a City That Doesn’t Flood? Turn It into a Sponge on Wednesday December 06, 2017 @09:16AM (#15861158)
http://www.cement.org/cement-concrete-applications/paving/pe... "However, in climates prone to severe freeze-thaw cycles, some are hesitant to use pervious concrete pavements until it has been proven that pervious concrete can be made to resist freeze-thaw damage." Pittsburgh does go through freeze thaw cycle, so I assume there aren't much problems

https://www.unh.edu/unhsc/sites/unh.edu.unhsc/files/pubs_spe...

According to this, it also reduces the amount of salt needed 75% for deicing and the pavement doesn't seem to have been damaged from reading the abstract.

Like the other guy pointed out, there isn't always an area to drain too. Also I'd say having more plants has other benefits, and so does draining water into the ground, which would lead to more ground water edit: and into an aquifer (like wanderr pointed out) instead of wasted into an ocean
Re:Are EV certificates worth the paper they're written on? on Wednesday December 06, 2017 @09:02AM (#15861073)
Yeah I don't think google not using a EV certificate really changes whether I can sue them
Re:Time Person of the Year 2017: The Silence Breakers on Wednesday December 06, 2017 @08:57AM (#15861049)
There's an interesting related wikipedia article on the "Weinstein effect" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weinstein_effect
I don't think that has happened here though. The drug use rate in portugal is still extremely low - 2% compared to 5-10% elsewhere in the EU
I was talking mainly about the simple case presented above.

x*y can be 0 (mod 6) but I don't think it takes knowing abstract algebra and a deep knowledge of modulo and axioms to figure that out. I hope math teachers that don't know abstract algebra know that!

Well I know there are entire books written to codify basic math. I don't knowing that, or say reading and understanding Russell's book, would help teach a child that 1+1 = 2
Regarding your students, well I don't dispute that there are students that think that - I just don't think that say a teacher knowing more about abstract algebra would be able to explain that better.
Re:Show HN: Discover, Listen and Discuss Classical Music on Wednesday December 06, 2017 @08:37AM (#15860930)
Well that seems to mostly be because it just seems like a website to categorize and discuss already uploaded youtube clips of music.
Re:Show HN: Discover, Listen and Discuss Classical Music on Wednesday December 06, 2017 @08:36AM (#15860923)
As far as I can see yes - which is what I was wondering, because it seems like a fancy way to categorize youtube clips and I already have a playlist of classical music videos in youtube.
Re:Show HN: Discover, Listen and Discuss Classical Music on Wednesday December 06, 2017 @08:35AM (#15860918)
This seems mostly like a social site for discussing/reviewing classical music + a fancy way to categorize youtube clips. The recommendations doesn't seem that useful as I've already listened to many of the pieces, and youtube provides recommendations which are pretty useful
"For example, we teach students in high school that if the product of two polynomials is zero, then to solve we set each one separately equal to zero. Yet this does not hold with nonzero numbers. For example, working in polynomials with real coefficients, we know that f(x) * g(x)=0 implies either f(x) = 0 or g(x) = 0. Yet it is not the case that if f(x) * g(x) = 4, then either f(x) = 2 or g(x) = 2."

Does this really require knowing abstract algebra? Seems obvious to anyone doing any sort of multiplication that if the output is 0 then one of variables/functions has to be 0, if it is nonzero then the variable/function can be anything but 0.

https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=1464837 "drug-related pathologies — such as sexually transmitted diseases and deaths due to drug usage — have decreased dramatically. Drug policy experts attribute those positive trends to the enhanced ability of the Portuguese government to offer treatment programs to its citizens — enhancements made possible, for numerous reasons, by decriminalization." from the guardian article "Portugal has seen dramatic drops in overdoses, HIV infection and drug-related crime." Problematic according to people dieing. Isn't getting the number of people dieing and getting diseases decreasing far more important than a rise in drug use?
https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=1464837 It's actually not drug use which has decreased all that much - it's actually "drug-related pathologies — such as sexually transmitted diseases and deaths due to drug usage — have decreased dramatically. Drug policy experts attribute those positive trends to the enhanced ability of the Portuguese government to offer treatment programs to its citizens — enhancements made possible, for numerous reasons, by decriminalization."

This obviously has nothing to do with the crisis.

He's saying that Europe has strict gun control laws and thus less homicides
