Re:A security update for the Raspberry Pi on Wednesday November 30, 2016 @10:55AM (#13071702)
As I understand the article, they've only modified the image used to deploy a fresh Raspbian, an update won't disable the ssh.
Re:.NET Productivity Improvements [video] on Friday November 25, 2016 @10:12AM (#13037222)
Note: the Go to navigation is available since VS 2010, you only need to set the shortcut.

Integration of style-cop-like rules seems ok, my only worry is that all those features will make VS sluggish. And that braces refactoring seems a poor example. Either you are a member of your team, and you don't write code without them, or it's some old code, that shouldn't be automatically refactored if the refactoring is the only goal.

Re:Why the Raspberry Pi will save the UK on Tuesday March 06, 2012 @05:45AM (#3670451)
A webdeveloper blog that does not work in an up-to-date browser (Opera)...

I get it when it is WebGL, but not for static text.

Re:Show HN: Tired of waking up like a rabid wolverine? on Sunday January 29, 2012 @04:14PM (#3526282)
There is an app that does a similar thing without any extra hardware (you put your phone on the bed, and it uses the accelerometer).

Re:Is WebGL the future? on Sunday December 18, 2011 @03:55AM (#3366290)
WebGL is not a poor-man's subset of OpenGL, its the same subset that is supported by most mobile devices (OpenGL ES2.0). What are you missing? Quads? 3D textures? NURBS?

And yes, we know that JS is interpreted and that it's no use for building anything more than a clock on your webpage, right?

The video does not show that anything is being logged or sent through the network.

All it shows is that a phone monitoring agent is informed about events that might be important while debugging - receiveing text, making calls, opening websites, pressing buttons. And that its hard to kill this agent without rooting the device.

What is important is: 1. Is the data logged on the device? (I guess that should be easy on a rooted device), 2. Is there any data sent even if the 'htc quality agent' is not activated? (route it through a linux box, tcpdump) 3. Is the data really anonymized if the 'htc quality agent' is enabled?

Reminds me of http://hitta.se/3d - zoom to Stockholm.

[edit: its their work as well]

Since you're here - sidwyn - Why would I use your video tutorials instead of Stanfords iOS course from iTunes university?
Re:Enigma machine coming up for auction on Sunday September 18, 2011 @01:12AM (#3009554)
Just to correct the article - the bletcley park team did not discover how to crack enigma messages.

Re:If Dropbox Used GitHub’s Pricing Plan on Wednesday July 20, 2011 @12:44AM (#2784337)
<i>In my small (12-person) design agency we have 244 repositories and we have a custom plan with Github just to pay for it. Other than rent and hosting, it's the most expensive thing that we pay for on a monthly basis.</i>

And how about wages for 12 employees?

MP3?

It allowed the Fraunhofer Institute to capitalize on their audio research.

Banks inflate the money without creating (printing) it physically. I guess a bank taking deposits and giving loans in bitcoins would do just the same.
I think it is a trend for current communist countries/dictatorships. Of course there will be corruption and nepotism, but why would you decide on someone without an engineering background to run a country?

If you give voting power to the people they'll just choose someone with a nice face and smooth voice, telling its all gonna be ok.

Lets wait until this has some peer-revied tests and they can claim a certain output in KWh for a sunny day in California or some region of Africa.
Re:1700 PS3s turned into an Air Force supercomputer on Thursday March 24, 2011 @01:39AM (#2363005)
Do you really think that building HPCs out of ps3 is so popular for sony to act on it? Millions of consoles have been sold.

AFAIR the Other OS boot was disabled because of an exploit for ps3-linux that disabled some watchdog mechanism.

The recording was done by the thief himself. I guess distributing someones video could be a copyright violation, but wouldn't be criminal. However activating camera/microphone remotely might be considered a wiretap.

Another thought: suppose the thief sold the laptop immediately, and the person recorded is guilty of buying a used laptop.

Re:North Korea's Digital Underground on Wednesday March 09, 2011 @12:10PM (#2305513)
I was surprised by the last scene in the video. In most countries no police officer on duty would tolerate being verbally and physically assaulted. Is he afraid (the woman being a party official), or is there another reason (e.g. cultural differences - with angry woman hitting man during conversation).

I'd love to see a documentary based on this underground material.

Re:Stupid EU cookie law will hand the advantage to the US on Wednesday March 09, 2011 @04:55AM (#2304429)
And stupid enviromental laws don't allow excessive mining and require costly procedures when handling waste. It hands the advantage to China, and other less restrictive countries.

'This is how its always been done' is not reason enough. Many sites require you to accept terms&conditions. Another checkbox really won't matter.

It would be nice if an article about "new cool" ipad app was viewable on the ipad (videos).
Re:Review my HTML5 game Freeciv.net again one year later on Saturday March 05, 2011 @11:32PM (#2293470)
it does not work in opera 11.01.

stops at lobby, start game does not do anything.

Re:The Age of Music Piracy Is Officially Over on Wednesday December 01, 2010 @11:43PM (#1961037)
"Online stores have cranked up the audio quality to a fat 256 Kbps. [...] It’s certainly better than most of the stuff out on BitTorrent."

Oh really?

Even wide open trackers have a lot of stuff encoded in 320/FLAC. And I guess no one bothers with anything less than that on sites that specialize in music.

It's the age of movie piracy now, but music piracy is not dead.

I second that. Using the same questions for a couple of years and blaming the students that they learned the answer to those questions?

questionable.

Re:Google Engineer Builds Facebook Disconnect on Wednesday October 20, 2010 @11:36AM (#1811603)
A browser extension to block a single service?

Use a general "browser firewall" and add http://*.connect.facebook.*/* to the list of blocked urls...

Re:programming challenge on Sunday October 17, 2010 @05:57AM (#1800018)
So how is this "challenge" more interesting than thousands of problems on SPOJ, UVA, topcoder or project Euler?
So next time - please design it for single-core.

On a 3GHz core2quad it fails to work smoothly in the endgame. The graphics are nice, but how can 640MB video memory be not enough to hold tiles at medium quality?

Physics? Particles? On a separate CPU core? It's Civilization, those things should only appear as researchable-items in the game. It seems that while pursuing parallelization someone forgot to check how it works alltogether.

Re:IPhone 4 Battery - Real World Results on Tuesday July 06, 2010 @07:28AM (#1490640)
When I see a headline on hackernews saying "Real World Results" I expect a bit more than a single result with only some vague information on what was running and how long.

As for the wifi - it might be that a phone scanning for networks will use more power than a phone steadily connected to an AP in the next room.

Re:The People Who Support Linux. Do You? on Thursday May 06, 2010 @02:29PM (#1325130)
What's your favorite, latest Linux innovation?

Fernandez: [...] The day I updated my laptop's kernel and discovered the wireless now worked out-of-the-box [...]

Ok. So why do you put something like that in an article meant to promote Linux?
