Arguably a single datapoint doesn't allow you to discern which caused what....

Did being alone underground for months warp his mind...?

Or do you have to be pretty bent to start with to do what every non-warped person doesn't do, because they can foresee it would really suck....

It used to be C++ would be the last choice for embedded...

Modern C++ with constexpr and friends and the massive work and cunning they have put into avoiding template bloat....

...C++ is now my first choice for embedded.

Re:21st Century C++ on Sunday February 09, 2025 @03:31PM (#42993639)
It's part of a compiler ecosystem. ie. The front end is shared.

See clang-tidy and clang analyzer for example.

ps: That's what I like most about the core guidelines, they are trying very hard to stick to guidelines (not rules) that pretty much uncontroversially make things safer _and_ can be checked automatically.

They're explicitly walking away from bikeshed paintings like naming conventions and formatting.

Nah. Unless it's a social call, the video stays off in our team.
Re:How did the gold standard work? on Saturday March 12, 2022 @10:56PM (#30657793)
In the Good Old Bad Old Days...

The South African Rand Note had the words, "I promise to pay the bearer, on demand at Pretoria, one Rand" and had the facsimile of the signature of the Governor of the Reserve Bank at the time.

I don't know of anybody who made the trip to exchange one. But by the time I could read that and understand it... you wouldn't of got much gold!

Re:Do Not Log on Wednesday January 05, 2022 @05:26PM (#29815983)
Logs are there for those WTF!? Moments. When something unexpected happen and you don't know what. When you need a clue any clue.

Logs are there for observability, so you can get those, "Oh wow! Cool!" moments when you see something that you never knew.

If you never make a mistake, or if you know your external systems and uses perfectly.... Don't log.

If you're a mortal that gets surprises... log.

Don't care. Want my morning time back.

I hate Morning Losing Time.

And there is the core difference....

For some socialization is stress relief.... for others, such as myself, it's stress.

Asshat bosses want bums on seats in plague pit openplan offices even if #WFH is eminently possible and as someone over 60 even vaccinated I'm still more at risk than I'd like.

If I was more financially secure I'd resign in a heartbeat, so looking around for a remote job.

"Last month, The Economist and The Atlantic published long features purporting to explore the phenomena of “Left-Wing Illiberalism” and “New Puritanism,” respectively. While both stories display the superficial features of investigative journalism, a deep dive reveals the same motivated reasoning, nonexistent evidence and indefensible editorial standards that misinformed the public about frivolous lawsuits."

So define the behaviour and get it pushed through the standards committee.

Or even define the behavior and get your compiler writer to implement it.

ps: If I index past the end of the array... what behaviour are you going to define?

Sort of "I have opinions, here are pictures, trust me".

Which one? A bundle of Plates? What about Plates that are 90 degrees to it?
Yup.

If a service is free, you're the commodity that is being bundled and sold.

If a service is paid for, you're a Premium Commodity with Money that is being bundled and sold.

Feels like some more detail is needed somewhere... sounds sort like "The Australian Dollar is the fastest moving currency"...

...that might be so, but moving relative to what?

Re:Reading code is a skill (2020) on Monday September 20, 2021 @06:10PM (#28599676)
Read actively.

* If you have a working hypothesis as to what the code is doing, state that hypothesis as a comment.

* If you think you know what it is doing, making that comment executable. ie. put in an assert. Better an assert punches you in the face than you rely on an incorrect analysis.

* If you don't know WTF happening, or not sure, turn that comment into observability, add logging or something.

* Make microcommits using rebase or the like, add observability, add asserts, add unit tests, add refactorings, make behavioural changes.

* Do only one thing per commit, makes review and test much easier.

Re:Linux Sucks 2021 – The End of Linux Is Nigh [video] on Wednesday September 15, 2021 @06:06PM (#28545002)
The point is it became that _because_ it is open source.
Re:Linux Sucks 2021 – The End of Linux Is Nigh [video] on Wednesday September 15, 2021 @05:40PM (#28544724)
Hint: The community has always been in shambles. It's a feature, not a bug.

Founders aren't banished, they aren't in any gulag. They can carry on. If they produce something better, they are still the drivers.

A commentator below said, "remind me to make my own license with "I take it all down with me if you destroy me" clause....

That is explicitly _not_ and open source license.

The point is no one, neither the founders, nor any that may replace them, "take it all down with me".

You may get a fork, well then, may the best fork win.

A while back gcc was forked. Remember egcs? It was the best fork for awhile.

Then the fork merged again with gcc again.

Yup. It happens.

Life moves on.

I hate long slow videos? Any slides.

He seems sometimes, if I remember previous years, to forget the point is open source, not linux.

If a better Open Source OS appears tomorrow, I'd abandon linux for it without a backward glance.

If it's closed source, it could be rainbows and ponies and I'd still turn it down.

On the otherhand, I bet an Open Source OS could grow any rainbows and ponies I actually need and want.

I don't work for Xiaomi.

But as a manufacturer, we have to get regulatory compliance for our products from the countries we sell to.

Yes, this is a Big and Expensive deal.

Of course, a grey marketer can physically ship our products from one regulatory regime to another without our permission.

So a countries regulatory authority finds our product for sale in their country and it doesn't comply with the regulations.... what recourse do they have?

The most common one is confiscation from the sellers.

But if the problem is sufficiently widespread, they may choose to put pressure on the manufacturer.... do something about this or we will block the sale of your goods in our country.

Yup. Don't blame Xiaomi, blame the regulatory authorities and the grey market importers.
