Re:GitHub: Can no longer search code without being logged in on Monday November 27, 2023 @12:42PM (#38435416)
everyone here will forget we only have encryption today because openbsd was in Canada.

every usa based project had to quit shipping any cryptography code. but who cares about history. who cares you can only participate in some open source project today if you have an account with usa companies? nobody cares. screw the Iranian engineering student. and hope the usa doesn't outlaw encryption again.

Re:GitHub: Can no longer search code without being logged in on Monday November 27, 2023 @12:39PM (#38435343)
it's about having you logged in for the day.

logged in user ad impression is 8 to 12 usd. anonymous user is .01cent per thousands.

most open source projects migrated to gh when they pledged it would always be free and open for open source...

now under new ownership they closed search and "pray they don't alter the terms further"

ps: also everyone here guessing wrong. Microsoft is an advertising company. requiring you profile for a service is self explanatory.

exactly. odd uh.

most firefox changes are actually to copy what chrome is doing.

like removing the search bar and forcing sending everything you type in the address bar to a search engine, having a logged in account in the browser, etc

and the race to scam people with snake oil that allows regulators to ignore you have government and personal identifiable information flying over aws is on!
Re:Google Drive has lost user data on Monday November 27, 2023 @05:25AM (#38430625)
support cost is inversely prop to quality (code and design)

knowing code quality levels at those companies and how they replace actual designers with PMs... it was their goal to have the most expensive support!

about:config, close on last tab close, set to false
yet huge ux changes between chrome updates are fine? *ponderingfaceemoji

Re:Why the local development experience matters (a lot) on Sunday November 26, 2023 @06:05PM (#38426041)
that's wrong, silly, and just bad advice.

installing crap on dev machines is as bad as recommending "curl -k ownme.wtf/install.sh | sudo bash"

just DOCUMENT things. if the requirements section is not trivial to satisfy, your dependencies suck or you suck at writing docs.

Re:Preparing for the end of third-party cookies on Sunday November 26, 2023 @02:04PM (#38424022)
my point was that google does.

it tries to whitewash how they moneyize it with the "cohort" traffic...

he's an anthropologist, he doesn't make predictions or be a prophet.

only Foucault, and not even on his research, only when being a rock star and giving interviews.

anyway, deleuze there is showing how society already is. how the phone company used privilege information since the 1890 or so etc.

now whatsapp and and apple replaced the phone company in that data collection, and scales are larger, but it's still the same, just intensified.

anyway, you must read the foundations. on anthropology every banal looking word carries a whole complex concept that is not clearly shown in bibliography or other means. losing that context seriously harms the understanding.

and all that still didn't give you the creative web that flash allowed.

that's why chrome have that nice little picture of your google profile on there ui. you're always logged at google.
knowing where the window is, you can generate something the user will click on a known position and then at the right time you trigger something like an administrator escalation privilege confirmation dialog and the user clicks that instead.

click jacking is always fun.

as everyone should!

people forget lesson from recent past. i don't know when google strong armed w3c to include this back... but we had this since ie4 days and then disabled everywhere since it was abused left and right for click jacking attacks.

maybe they are making more on the side of the business who is buying the station real state?

corporate raiders works in strange, well, actually, simplistic and dumb ways.

Re:A story of Docker, QEMU, and memfd_create() on Friday November 24, 2023 @05:58AM (#38402669)
i feel sorry for people who uses docker.

falling for marketing or non critical group thinking, and then learning of their bad choices piecemeal for years on

nothing propelled me more to the competition like owning a Google made phone.

Re:The best place for product reviews is … Reddit? on Wednesday November 22, 2023 @02:50PM (#38384210)
only in places with

1. less than 500 subscribers; and

2. not created by the scamers (there are subreddits for selling online mattresses, i kid you not)

A: yes, since gpl v3, but nobody cares.
thanks. couldn't have guessed that from the comment alone. not like I'm following this fabricated soap opera very close
that's what fines are for.

most people criticize fines as a mere check for the offender belonging to some moneyed elite and nothing else.

fines are not replacement for civil law. if anyone think they were wronged, that's the only way. not a magically proactive government becoming their patents.

not to mention living in a time you didn't need an email to get a driver's license. heck in brazil, southafrica and some parts of india you cannot even get one without a freaking whatsapp (which you cannot get without a mobile phone account (which you cannot get without a bank account (which...)))

the other day i also had to take a selfie in a government owned app which required a phone with active google play store service, to allow me to see my own data, with no alternative method (being implemented so they say)

what this have to do with their willingness to join Microsoft?!?
