exactly. like when Yoel Roth (former safety lead at twitter) worked w/ FBI to ban conservative accounts, critical of Hunter Biden. No one cared, and Yoel and the FBI intuitively understood that.
Re:Moderna's mRNA cancer vaccine works better than thought on Tuesday December 26, 2023 @08:36PM (#38778119)
I'm not taking a side either, but seeing as drug companies are shielded from liability w/ vaccines, if I was a drug company I would be motivated to lobby broadening the definition. it would just be good business.
Re:The Death of a Relic Hunter on Sunday November 26, 2023 @09:06PM (#38427273)
Bill would give you the shirt off his back (then steal it from you later that night).
nothing screams 'protect public interest' more than Wall Streets biggest cheerleader during 2008 financial crisis. who's next, Richard S. Fuld Jr ? Should the Enron guys be included ?
drug dealers will continue to sell drugs irregardless of financial stability. when law enforcement defers arrest/prosecution the drug dealing doesn't become less harmful to communities, the opposite is true. look at SF/Oakland. organized rings maximizing profits in retail theft and property crimes. if this is the alternative to broken windows theory of policing then good luck w/ that.
Re:Why the Eddie Murphy Rule Is About More Than Orange Juice (2019) on Wednesday September 13, 2023 @03:20PM (#37500548)
thats a great point. its fair in a 'pursuit of happiness' type of way.
Re:Nostr: A Decentralized Messaging Protocol on Friday September 01, 2023 @08:08PM (#37357437)
nostr being an offshoot of crypto/bitcoin tech influences the protocol in important ways, like everything crypto/bitcoin you need to read documentation to understand the terminology being used and you need to 'invest' in the culture, which is bitcoin evangelist culture w/ all the baggage.
Re:Total data loss after botched GitOps and failed backups on Monday August 28, 2023 @12:37AM (#37289833)
hey, it's a mistake the admin will never make again, so. be a cup half full person... you don't have to worry about the data any more also.

Re:How to Befriend Crows on Monday December 26, 2022 @05:14PM (#34142495)
i fed a few blocks of crows for 4 years. mostly dry cat food. each block had a unique family group and they swoop down in succession, hop over and i'd stand there and watch them eat for a bit. I also saw a crow funeral once and I stopped a crow dive bombing run (on other pedestrians).
I love Beyond Sausages for that very reason. they cook up like a sausage, they even have a sausage like skin. I think its pretty great, although highly processed and not suitable for staple food IMMO.
I much prefer Beyond Burgers as well, and the sausages. I even invested in the company, and it's surprising to me the negative press and Wall St shorting action.
Re:Twitodon: Finding Twitter Peers on Mastodon on Sunday October 30, 2022 @05:58PM (#33399253)
twitter has a social dynamic where opposing interests feed off of each other so you need in-group + out-group. there are psychosocial elements which mastodon does not have as it's more reddit like IMHO. edit: for clarity

Re:Science is political, and that's a bad thing on Saturday September 03, 2022 @12:36AM (#32698767)
Here's the Nature article from last week which was surprising to many inc Hacker News https://www.nature.com/articles/s41562-022-01443-2

re: hard sciences, the scientific community's refusal to accept the covid lab leak hypothesis stands out IMHO. School shutdowns/mask mandates for pre-k and public schools is another politicalized issue.

Re:Observations from our Joe Rogan Experience experience on Tuesday August 30, 2022 @04:55PM (#32654934)
If we were able to get to the source of the 'trust science' clique, I bet we would be amazed at how uninteresting it all is. grievances about hurt feelings, mental health issues and moral panic.
Re:ProtonMail Is Down on Monday July 11, 2022 @11:32AM (#32057470)
its like blackhawk down but w/ proton mail.
Re:Twitter CEO fires two top executives, freezes hiring on Thursday May 12, 2022 @10:03PM (#31362420)
I cunningly bought TWTR at the top too and thus was hoisted by mine own petard. basically as a retail investor I have no leverage so all in all I'm happy to just get my money returned.
the free internet was cancelled w/ Richard Stallman I guess. This is what we get. what a great future we computer folks have provided to our next generation.
Google should be paying you for using their search engine. There's your solution to affiliate links.
Re:How Basecamp Blew Up on Tuesday May 04, 2021 @08:19PM (#27044527)
upper middle class people unite !
many industries are dependant on Excel also. entire industries. Accounting, finance etc...
this is common whataboutism. What about the dark ages ? What about burning witches ? If we claim to be a compassionate society we should be anti-censorship and let ideas succeed or fail through the strength of their argument.
I for one am glad Tesla did the right thing and were pro life saving. Thats what makes Elon Musk an of the box thinker.
I'm more concerned that comments critical of anti-racism could be cause for censure in future, ala 'social credit system'. That seems to be a possibility with the internet being locked down, increased censorship, calls for de-platforming 'hate'.
Re:Bitcoin surpasses $50K as major companies jump into crypto on Tuesday February 16, 2021 @08:18PM (#26161377)
I've read that most mining pools are consolidating now, and if they control a majority of computing power it leaves Bitcoin vulnerable to attack. Or what about the hard fork ? My skepticism is not w/ the tech (which is great) its with Bitcoin adoption by non-tech people who have no protection via regulation.
Re:Are the New M1 Macbooks Any Good for Deep Learning? on Monday February 15, 2021 @09:56PM (#26150421)
In general M1 is fastastic tho.
All we know is 1.it definitely did not come from a lab 2. it could have been imported from another country's frozen bat industry.
Re:How to lower the price of plant-based meat on Sunday February 07, 2021 @12:22AM (#26052871)
people should be cautious and imho more importantly, people should be informed and adding processed soy, oils, sodium etc to meat alternatives in hope of reducing price is a horrible solution. If that's the only way we're going to get people offsetting meat consumption its a sad state of affair.
