This is more than a year old and it's a porn site

Who cares

Re:Omegle founder shuts down site forever? on Thursday November 09, 2023 @05:56AM (#38203438)
No one in Europe made an Omegle like website since 2009?
Re:Are we doing this again? Yes, we're doing this again on Thursday November 09, 2023 @05:53AM (#38203411)
It's the result of online culture rewarding snarky hot takes with increased ad revenue

And it's infected the whole web so that even free blogs use the same voice

Re:Omegle founder shuts down site forever? on Thursday November 09, 2023 @05:46AM (#38203361)
I would say that the online community has always been superficial

It feels good but you are still alone

It's never been a good thing, it's been a time sync and it's why birth rates are down, depression is up, loneliness is rampant, and everyone is addicted to narcissism machines

Re:Omegle founder shuts down site forever? on Wednesday November 08, 2023 @10:43PM (#38200901)
If I could unmake the Internet I would in a second, without hesitation.

The lack of local community as everyone moves to a global gray sameness is the grossest thing to happen to this world.

Using it as a crutch to fool yourself into what you think is normal is not healthy and it's not a solution to real problems.

Omegle disappearing is neither surprising nor sad, and it's nothing personal against them specifically.

I expect to get down voted to oblivion because no one likes to hear harsh truths, but the internet has been a net negative for us all

I think your concept of productivity is faulty.

The point being made is that your increased speed to market comes at a cost

Yes there are many applications that probably just don't need to exist but you can make a living cranking out

Not everyone should do any one thing all the time. But we have to be careful not to always discard hard work in favor of speed and convenience.

Jon Blow and Casey Muratori are reminding people to take responsibility for what we're doing. Learn how things work and be ambitious.

I don't care what the rest of the world thinks or wants
Re:Americans' confidence in technology firms has dropped on Tuesday October 24, 2023 @09:06AM (#37998647)
I literally said I'm not in support of my own dumb idea

I know things are more complicated

You, however, need a mirror. Everything you just said is a wonderful display of willful ignorance. Your head in the sand does not protect you from the world

Big Tech, in 2023, is effectively a governmental body. I mean all 7 (or whatever) of the largest companies. They operate in a wildly anti-competitive and anti-free-market way, rivaling even the Railroad tycoons of a bygone era.

I'm not anti-corporation, but there needs to be some effort put into correcting this. It's not going to fix itself.

Our country would be a lot better off with a lot of small businesses rather than a few gigantic businesses.

Re:Americans' confidence in technology firms has dropped on Tuesday October 24, 2023 @08:49AM (#37998444)
I don't expect anything to improve at all, TBH

I would like to see the government break up a lot of these mega corporations, but it's not a great solution

Our global economy just means overseas companies will buy them, or they will move offshore and compete where we can enforce anything

I don't have any answers, but I think we can all recognize something's not working here

Re:Americans' confidence in technology firms has dropped on Tuesday October 24, 2023 @08:45AM (#37998398)
I'm not arguing that it doesn't work and create a feedback loop

I'm arguing it's destructive long-term by creating a Goliath no one can compete with

Or several Goliaths in this case

Consolidation leads to stagnation

Such a banger

Thanks for the novel, please keep your politics to yourself
Re:Good times create weak men on Tuesday October 24, 2023 @08:35AM (#37998256)
Rome was the global superpower all the way until they weren't

Edit: However, I will concede that I think nuclear annihilation is more likely. So in that case you would be correct by accident

Re:Americans' confidence in technology firms has dropped on Tuesday October 24, 2023 @08:32AM (#37998215)
That's not an excuse to continue

I'm not even anti-corporation, but to pretend everything is fine seems silly

Re:Good times create weak men on Tuesday October 24, 2023 @08:18AM (#37998065)
Men is shorthand for men and women
Re:Good times create weak men on Tuesday October 24, 2023 @08:16AM (#37998053)
That Jon Blow video is one I always tell people to watch

That video and Casey Muratori's "The Thirty Million Line Problem" video

Similar theme, and really a call to action.

We, as an industry, need to fight entropy and chaos. Not through regulation or authoritarianism, just every one of us needs to take the responsibility and try to make things better

Re:Americans' confidence in technology firms has dropped on Tuesday October 24, 2023 @08:07AM (#37997958)
It would be easier to limit companies to fewer than 200 employees

Edit: just a passing thought, I don't advocate for any of these ideas. Just complaining, I have no answers

Re:I Face Investigation for Terrorism on Tuesday October 24, 2023 @08:05AM (#37997930)
We are talking past each other.

There are two truths:

1. It is forbidden by law in many places (including the US).

2. They will get away with it regardless, in nearly every case. So often that practically speaking it's allowed

Re:I Face Investigation for Terrorism on Tuesday October 24, 2023 @07:54AM (#37997827)
This is universal lmao

And it's not just a current events thing

Re:I Face Investigation for Terrorism on Tuesday October 24, 2023 @07:54AM (#37997818)
Yes and if you force them to prosecute, only then can you take it to an appeals court to strike down an unconstitutional law

The system sucks but this is how it works

Re:Journalism in the Age of Social Media (2010) on Tuesday October 24, 2023 @07:52AM (#37997790)
Lol at the headline
Re:Americans' confidence in technology firms has dropped on Tuesday October 24, 2023 @07:50AM (#37997778)
It feels like part of it is a cultural issue. People in the startup space largely seem uninterested in starting companies they will run their whole life

They just want the fun of experimentation and a payday

And like that's fine whatever, live your life, but it's creating a really crappy feedback loop of monopolization and buy outs

Re:I Face Investigation for Terrorism on Tuesday October 24, 2023 @07:48AM (#37997758)
Google Chicago PD blacksites

It's a feature they aren't afraid of ignoring

Re:Americans' confidence in technology firms has dropped on Tuesday October 24, 2023 @07:46AM (#37997734)
Big Tech needs a reckoning.

They are stagnant because they outsource almost all real R&D to startups they can buy only after they've done the hard work of proving success

I know it's not a monopoly per se, but it's anti-competitive and there's too many walled gardens

Re:Americans' confidence in technology firms has dropped on Tuesday October 24, 2023 @07:44AM (#37997710)
