DRM and watermarking of e-books should be banned. Copyright should be abolished.
On my desktop computer I use the Gentoo distribution and the i3 window manager.
I'm using Windows 10 inside a QEMU virtual machine on a Gentoo Linux host system. I need it in order to download e-books with DRM because Adobe Digital Editions only runs on Windows. My QEMU configuration works pretty well. Anyway I would greately prefer not to use any proprietary software.
Re:Who is buying the Bitcoin dip? on Wednesday November 21, 2018 @05:31AM (#18501549)
If I had extra money left I would buy some other bitcoins. That's not the case unfortunately...
Re:Ask HN: Do you live a Free Software only life? on Tuesday August 28, 2018 @02:28PM (#17861451)
I try to use free software only, but unfortunately that's not always the case. For example the BIOS of my desktop computer is proprietary. I also don't use a FSF-approved GNU/Linux distribution on my desktop because I prefer Gentoo. But I set ACCEPT_LICENSE="-* @FREE" and I don't have any exceptions in package.license. Unfortunately I still can't enable the bindist USE flag due to some unsolved issues with openssl. I use deblobed linux-libre instead of gentoo-sources. I use LineageOS on my smartphone, which brings a few more non-free software with it. I also routinely run proprietary Javascript code on my browser when visiting most websites.

Unfortunately the author has not finished writing it yet. I will keep an eye on it.
The positive fact about GOG is that they sell games without DRM. The negative fact about GOG is that they sell proprietary games. This is why I won't support their initiative. Defective by Design by the FSF is a better way to get involved.
Re:Ask HN: Do you still enjoy toys as adults? on Wednesday August 22, 2018 @03:03PM (#17821072)
No, I don't play with toys anymore. I still have some toys left, but I'll probably donate them sooner or later.
Re:Valve Proton: Run Windows Games on Linux Using Steam Play on Wednesday August 22, 2018 @07:15AM (#17817844)
Don't use it. It's proprietary software.
Re:The FCK DRM initiative on Wednesday August 22, 2018 @07:04AM (#17817797)
I agree that DRM is bad. But proprietary software is also bad. And GOG sells a lot of proprietary software. So I won't join the FCK DRM initiative.
Re:Ask HN: What are you addicted to? on Wednesday August 22, 2018 @06:52AM (#17817749)
I'm addicted to computers and the Internet.
Re:FCK DRM on Tuesday August 21, 2018 @03:40PM (#17812992)
I agree that DRM is a bad thing. But proprietary software is also a bad thing. And GOG sells a lot of proprietary software.
Why do they say "Afrikan" instead of "African"? The former is not good English as far as I know...
Re:Ask HN: Would you take a pay cut for a shorter commute? on Monday August 20, 2018 @04:30PM (#17803672)
If I were you I would certainly take the local job. I strongly hate commuting.
That's really sad. Animal testing is unethical and should be abolished.
Re:Ask HN: What would you pay $5/month for? on Friday August 17, 2018 @08:56AM (#17782424)
I would pay 5 € per month (or even 10 €) for reading any e-book I want. But this service should come without DRM, otherwise I wouldn't subscribe.

Now it says: "Note: SITE RESTORATION IN PROGRESS"
Re:Tracking users with AdBlockers on Tuesday August 14, 2018 @01:06PM (#17759718)
Ad blocking is not a problem. It is the solution to the problem of advertisements.
Re:Ask HN: How would you solve climate change? on Thursday August 09, 2018 @05:12PM (#17728547)
I would introduce a heavy tax on greenhouse gas emissions, and I would redistribute all the revenues as universal basic income.
On top of my head: Apple, Microsoft, Facebook.
Re:Ask HN: What's your daily fitness routine? on Thursday August 02, 2018 @08:24AM (#17670895)
I track calories for everything I eat. Moreover I do 25-30 minutes of jogging daily. When it rains I do 5 kilometers with my stationary bike instead.
I use Org Mode so I have a plain text file called todo-bookmarks.org with a list of links to the articles I want to read.
Probably around 100,000 €.
