it was decommissioned due to damage caused by Hurricane Maria in 2017.

Repairing it would require extra funding, so it collapsed from the hurricane damage and it did not collapse due to cuts in funding.

but it's not important whether it's true or not, it was used as an analogy for helping understanding of a different topic; its truth value does not affect the truth value of the point being made. If you disagree with the point, don't attack the analogy, make a point about the subject in question, perhaps by using a different analogy to make your point.

i asked you first and you didn't answer what I asked, so why should I do what you ask? I am prepared to refute your point, but we need to stick to the agenda as set down.

>in fact, the linked article even has a whole section to support your doubt about the claim

I didn't say I doubted the claim, in fact I went to the trouble to say I believed it. So you should try again to glean what I could have meant.

this is not a data point that confirms that exercise and lifting is good for you. think of it like telomeres: they give you a choice, "cancer or youth, pick two or don't play"

science like this is very useful like one puzzle piece is very useful: only in the context of many other puzzle pieces, but they're also jumbled together from many different complete puzzles.

I have heard and I do believe that there are countries that use other colors for babies, but wouldn't trust wikipedia nor its selective sources on any topic like gender; wikipedia is no longer enslaved to the truth.
Re:US boy names that became girl names and vice versa on Monday November 02, 2026 @01:21PM (#50341177)
Marlo/Marla is also inherently gendered

for people from languages that mark gender with an ending (romance languages for instance), putting the "wrong" ending something like a noun would sound odd or change the meaning

Amazon draws a lot of it's revenue from AWS/Cloud services, i.e. not consumer, and only some from sales of low margin consumer goods.

Apple gets the bulk of it's revenue from high margin consumer devices, apps, and consumer subscription plans etc.

it had already been decommissioned prior to the collapse. Yes, decommissioning does indicate funding is being cut, but it was unrelated to the collapse.
Re:We Took over ChatGPT Accounts on Saturday October 31, 2026 @03:34PM (#50319318)
A company worth trillions does not have trillions, that is the expectation for what it will be worth in the future based on money it has already spent and will need to keep spending.

Moreover, that translates to "it's actually carrying a huge nut* that puts extremely intense pressure on the company to figure out how to make as much money as possible as soon as possible."

(*nut is a slang word from loan sharking that has been adopted by (personal et al) finance people. It means "how much do you owe each month?" in the sense of, if you want to do a startup, advisors could ask, "what's your nut, and how much do you have left to self-invest?" Because monthly expense can be combined to a lump sum, it can also mean the size of the overall loan where the monthly interest is called the vig, "as long youze got da nut, you owe me da vig;" from vigorish, which would also require an etymology, but I'm assuming it's the word vigor combined with licorice meaning bitter tasting medicine, and nut because squirrels busy themselves carrying nuts.)

----

and if we can... and remember flame-prone people, if you reject the "can" premise, then the rest of the argument goes away, and you don't need to dispute it, you just say "you can't nuff said"; people here frequently seem challenged by propositions.

so, if we can...loosely describe the attitude you show here toward high market cap companies to be compatible with "left" or "socialist" or "populist" views shared by many others here, then I'll point out that at the same time wanting higher market prices paid for bounties because 'sploits are so expensive, is actually advocating for the same dread capitalist market based solution that leads to trillion dollar companies that never even had a trillion to begin with.

Re:Brief History of PDP Computers on Saturday October 31, 2026 @03:10AM (#50313912)
To round out the timeline I'd include the TX-0, first computer based on transistors, and essentially the experimental prototype/proof of concept of what became the PDP-1. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TX-0

then on the other end of the timeline, the DECSYSTEM-20 which wasn't any longer called PDP but it was simply an upgraded PDP-10. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DECSYSTEM-20

stick to one topic: was the US the worst place for black people in the world? No it was not. Provide evidence that it was. Then I will point out to you that it was worse in other places.

There is still Black African slavery today in neighboring Arab countries, google it. Focus your attention on fixing things that are wrong and stop distracting yourself with things that are false.

Booker T Washington was in the context of the Jim Crow South and KKK. You really think that it would benefit Black people individually to refuse to accept segregation? In those times?

Stop changing the subject.

>Doesn't mean the US, with KKK, Jim Crow, seggregation, and the rest was the best country in the world for blacks to live

just ignoring the person you're talking to and bellowing the same things over and over does not make you anything like "right". Booker T Washington was a bigger expert on race issues concerning Africans and African Americans than you, and he says you are W. R. O. N. G.

It doesn't change or make better the situation for Blacks now or 100 years ago to point that out, but it is wrong to say that the US was the worst. It wasn't. Stop exaggerating like that and stick closer to the truth.

>Carefully side-stepping...

You wrote a comment, I critiqued it with facts, and it is YOU who is changing the topic and carefully side-stepping that I showed you were wrong. (I replied to someone else about Gaza.)

I have to jump in some cabs now, so you now have time to contemplate the error of your ways rather than hoping I'll see what you write further.

on a daily basis, the people of Gaza are more oppressed by their own government. Gaza 60 or 70 years ago was territory claimed by Egypt just as the West Bank was territory claimed by Jordan; and Egypt and Jordan gave up their claims because of the hostility of the terrorist movement there.

If it's a question of ethnic strife, the condition of the West Bank and Gaza are due to strife between the West Bank and Jordan, and Gaza with Egypt as anything else.

I wasn't comparing brutal acts, I was arguing with facts against the literal language employed in the comment I was replying to.

antifa isn't a single organization, but groups under that umbrella do cooperate with, or are coopted front groups for, Marxist groups, and connect with any nationalist or sectarian strife in the world. You need to read up on "the theory of the revolutionary vanguard" and their self perceived role and techniques for fomenting revolution: that's who I'm talking about when I say antifa. Many people who consider themselves part of antifa for muh racism or muh increased minimum wage or muh ACAB might not be intellectual or well read about the history of Marxist revolutionaries, and they might beven be shocked to discover they intellectual Marxists are trying (and succeeding) in controlling their organizations toward a goal that's more likely to get a new Stalinist government.

or maybe because Africa was under brutal European colonization at the time, look up Belgium
>remember that our governments were the principle violators of civil rights, just a few short decades ago.

Booker T Washington, a notable and well-known African American scholar and public intellectual who worked tirelessly to improve the lives of Black Americans and is considered an authority on these topics, said in an 1895 speech in Alanta that despite the civil rights challenges faced by African Americans, that America was the best place in the world for Africans to live and prosper. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlanta_Exposition_Speech It is silly to present yourself as more knowledgeable or morally pure about civil rights than Booker T Washington.

so, no, you are wrong, without defending any of the injustices that occurred, America has literally not been the principle violator of civil rights at any point in its history. (The wars against Native Americans were wars just like the wars that the Native Americans inflicted on each other and which were and are still taking place in many other parts of the world, no other word to use than barbaric and indefensible. Yet, worst in the world? worst in that period? No.)

It's especially jarring to understand this in the context of the utterly racist "war on terror"...which is just racism under cover. Racists can't use the n-word any more, so they invented "terrorist" to continue their bigotry and hatred of cultures they've deemed inferior.

you put "war on terror" in quotes, rightfully, because you recognize that it's just a catchphrase like the wars "on cancer", "on smoking", "on diabetes", etc. And you are using the term "racist" the same way. Most terrorism in the last 60ish years is associated with some Arabs and also some Islamists, and with or in cooperation with, anarcho-Marxists like Bader-Meinhof, Brigate Rosse/Red Brigades, antifa, etc. These people do not form a race or inasmuch as they do it's within the white "races", i.e. not much African and not much Asian. But like the "war on terror", you want to invest your misguided view of this struggle as beyond reproach so you say people who engage in it are Racists™. The PLO was not Islamic, the PLO was nationalistic. Islam isn't a race. Capitalism is not Christianity. Humans get into conflict about ideas more than anything else. Debate the ideas and don't contribute to strife by lashing out emotionally.

>"It's one thing to consider the West to be morally and technologically superior with regards to civil rights"

yes, go on...

As your profile page says, "listen here, person, respect is mutual": none of us is perfect, but those are words to at least try to live by.

i have 4 email accounts, and I check them maybe once a week. nobody sends me emails any more, everybody uses "messaging"

(actually, i forgot i have 2 or 3 others, I check them even less, perhaps a few times a year, really only when i need to reset a password associated with them)

Re:SS United States to be sunk as largest artificial reef on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @10:43PM (#50268741)
United States was withdrawn from service in a surprise announcement in 1969. All planned cruises were canceled, and the ship changed owners repeatedly for the next several decades. Every owner attempted to make the ship profitable, but she was aging and poorly maintained. In 1984, her interior furnishings were sold at auction, and the rest of her interiors were stripped to the bulkheads in 1994. In 1996, she was towed to Philadelphia, where she remained until February 2025.

(not sure it should have been much of a surprise, jetliners were taking all the high paying traffic)

Re:SS United States to be sunk as largest artificial reef on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @10:39PM (#50268720)
The fastest transatlantic crossing by a passenger liner was set by the SS United States in July 1952, averaging 35.51 knots (65.76 kmh) earning her the Blue Riband

>While I do believe that selling to DigitalOcean was a mistake ultimately

using the word "ultimately" makes this "Monday night quarterbacking"

It's not a mistake to plan a picnic for a day that turns out to be rainy, even if you got paid to plan the picnic.

It would be a mistake to sell if the seller should have known at the time of the sale that the seller's goals would not be met, but something turning out badly doesn't retroactively make it having been a mistake, it just means it came out badly.

it's not a public good, it doesn't have the criteria for a public good. It's rivalrous, and can be used by someone for near perfect tranquility by preventing others from using it as well.

I know what you'd like it to be, and I can agree with you, but it's not a public good.

my style of discussing things (let's call it "give credit to your interlocuters") doesn't work on this site.

this discussion is filled with people who love high performance computing, and they are mostly saying "I wouldn't buy this" and the reason "too expensive" and they compared it to "business class". my comment was in response to a sharer of that sentiment. (I picked onesuch comment since there is no way to reply to all of them) and pointed out "if you come at this from the other direction, you can see a population of people who will buy it, business class that you consider to be overpriced is full".

>That doesn’t mean the people that buy this laptop fly business class

I didn't say it did.

you should look at the totally of comments and consider "in what way way can this comment be considered correct" rather than looking for ways to say things are incorrect because you didn't anticipate what was going to be said.

but you're in a position to understand now, that people who do fly business everywhere, can also afford one of these laptops for a fraction of what they spend flying. that's the use case.
so, the engineers who built the dams did understand the downstream effects of their decisions? and they did it anyway?
