A history of technology, edited by Singer, several volumes and many authors. It's old historiographically (from the Fifties) but very detailed and comprehensive; I have a recent Italian paperback edition but you should be able to find it in English easily enough. Lots of fascinating details.

I'll see if I can come up with something with more up to date scholarship / better pictures (the work above is effectively but simply illustrated).

You're probably thinking of a 75%, which is a questionable layout, yes. A typical TKL keyboard is spaced like a fullsize, just without the numpad cluster.

Smaller layouts (even 40%) have their advantages in minimizing how much you have to move your hands and fingers but there are tradeoffs (and a learning curve due to the necessary layers in the smallest ones).

The rest isn't particularly nice either but I would describe it more as "suboptimal decisions" than lack of effort.

They're not bad keyboards but you can get superior custom tenkeyless or even fullsize ones (if you must) without even having to deal with group buys now.

Very underwhelming keyboard there, given the overall effort.

Did they have unfettered power? This is obviously a non sequitur.

Is the mayor expected to personally micromanage the fire deparment during fires? Criticism should be leveled at policy, not photo ops.

Custom handwired (maybe with amoeba pcbs to help) keyboard, there are a lot of designs out there.
Anectodally elephants do things like hiding and revaling objects for no apparent reason other than comical effect. One could build elaborate evolutionary fitness reasons for this, but I mean...
I have not reviewed the details of the case and have no opinion on actual guilt, I was commenting on a specific line of reasoning.
This is an abuse of statistics, because you're not considering the likelyhood that a random 15-time felon killed someone, but the likelyhood that a specific 15-time felon that was accused of killing a specific person actually did it.

If you were trying to pick a realistic scapegoat he would have been a great candidate.

No. Tiny sensor, can't use grad NDs, wide angle camera even worse, relies on intense computational methods for dynamic range that will destroy the specific light and time character of landscapes.

Making prints, especially large prints, requires high technical quality images that phones can't provide.

"Flagship" cameras besides the Sony A1 aren't all-rounders, they're historically fast and rugged big bodies for shooting sports. The Z9 was very forward looking in this category in 2021 (shutterless design, speedy sensor readout) and is still very competitive.
Re:The Soviet Union's Monster Mi-6 Helicopter Airliner on Tuesday July 02, 2024 @04:42PM (#40860225)
You cannot seriously think that you need 1:1 parity missile-to-shell in that paradigm. The overall result from the conflict is that the soviet doctrine underperfomed, with especially abysmal results for the IADS part of it.
Re:Phillipine court bans growth of transgenic golden rice on Saturday May 04, 2024 @09:18AM (#40257449)
It's more of a measure against competitor sellers than against farmers.
Re:Phillipine court bans growth of transgenic golden rice on Saturday May 04, 2024 @08:58AM (#40257339)
That's also (mostly) propaganda. Farmers are very busy without having to deal with the side business of inefficiently growing their seeds and would buy anyway.
My favourite of his pieces is Open Field Vertical Elevations, which incidentally was erected in the fields outside the residence of a collector who also recently passed, near where I live in the middle of nowhere, Tuscany.

In person, viewed while immersed in its necessary context of landscape, it is visually powerful and moving. It is also a link to the greater world outside our narrow vales and to a cultural history of patronage of the arts.

I understand that the attitudes here are mostly skeptical of contemporary art, but it really goes too far in most cases. Serra wasn't Hirst.

Re:Coding the anime "woosh" screen on Amiga on Sunday February 25, 2024 @04:35AM (#39499250)
As is was already noted, scanline-level techniques were commonly used in Amiga games.

A few of the more sophisticated efforts could be argued to be technically superior to anything on the SNES; consider Shadow of the Beast 3 or Lionheart.

Re:The right way to sauce pasta (2016) on Sunday January 28, 2024 @08:16AM (#39165413)
Not commonly in my (Tuscan) experience but there is regional variation, in some areas (mountains, some northern areas) it's used; the French use a lot of it.

I would avoid using it as a partial substitute of olive oil, however. Use butter if the recipe calls for it.

A bucket of yellow paint would be a likely choice if that were the case.
Sorry, I only saw this question now. It does get applied to raws but I think in a non-destructive way.
I would assume so, it's the same on my Sigma fp L.

Souris seems related to the Italian synonym / pejorative sorcio (for mouse) but I haven't checked.

An arsenal that small is already subject to virtual attrition by current ABM efforts.
That's just taking undue credit.
Re:Blackmagic Camera for iPhone on Monday October 09, 2023 @03:35AM (#37817962)
It's complex. Many modern cameras have dual or triple gain amplifiers, with various range setups. Some ISO settings might be just a digital multiplier on the highest setting of the lower gain stage before switching to the higher gain (which may result in having better snr at higher iso for some settings).

Remember that "digital" sensors are mostly analog devices (dealing in continuous voltages).

Re:David Tolnay on the "RustConf Keynote Fiasco" on Monday September 04, 2023 @03:44PM (#37384197)
It's theoretically possibile that it's ineptitude, but only barely; if "I don't think that this feature is ready yet, so I will anonimously lobby behind the scenes to avoid it being talked about in public" is the strongest exculpatory explanation that someone can find for their actions...

Also, being inept and clinging to one's position isn't a good look either.

Re:David Tolnay on the "RustConf Keynote Fiasco" on Monday September 04, 2023 @02:15PM (#37383267)
It's not merely odd, it's a crass (if low stakes) power play by someone obviously intent on sabotage (might be personal, might be related to a perceived fiefdom etc.).
Re:David Tolnay on the "RustConf Keynote Fiasco" on Monday September 04, 2023 @08:10AM (#37379716)
"Tier 2" conferences would do well to blacklist this individual. While this is rather low-stakes as far as governance issues can go, the inadequacy is obvious.

Re:2,000-year-old synagogue found in southern Russia on Wednesday August 16, 2023 @08:30PM (#37155685)
The OP is very crude (and out of order, we're not debating Judaism being real), but to try to answer: it's not an inherent feature of the belief systems, it's related to the historical success of Ptolemaic astronomy (which permeates the text of the Gospels, e.g. "I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven"). "High gods" are not anthropologically rare either.
