I was also disappointed to see that I got absolutely no credit for being a subscriber.
this is a huge bummer.
Re:Watch R1 "think" with animated chains of thought on Monday February 17, 2025 @02:34PM (#43082529)
Is this better rephrased as “any two vectors in a high-dimensional space are almost always functionally orthogonal”?

I have mostly a laypersons understanding of this idea but I would assume that it would be false to say that they are typically _entirely_ orthogonal?

I run multiple LSPs on Ruby files with no issues. ruby-lsp and StandardRB are both Ruby specific.
Yeah, I’m fairly sure the “range extender” (engine) component was optional, not sure what the take rate was. A small percentage of an already infrequently-purchased car.
Assuming it’s the same as my PG&E bill, it’s split into “generation” and “delivery” charges.
Re:ZX – A tool for writing better scripts on Saturday February 10, 2024 @08:54AM (#39326128)
This is pedantic to the point of being conversationally hostile.
The expectation is that it takes seconds to become unconscious, after which you asphyxiate over the period of minutes.
Re:Cheapest and Most Expensive Appliances to Run Each Year on Sunday December 31, 2023 @01:04PM (#38826059)
Jeez $0.21/kwh for “pacific”? I know generally San Francisco is an outlier but I’m paying $0.39.
Yikes. This is the flight I take home from visiting family usually multiple times per year. Love PAE as an airport.
Re:Show HN: Van, truck or car camp for $0 a night on Tuesday July 11, 2023 @11:03PM (#36689998)
That was a great read, thanks.
Re:Ask HN: Alternatives to Reddit on Monday June 12, 2023 @12:22PM (#36296061)
Yeah. Seems like it could really benefit from a larger user base, but obviously they understand that and are taking it slowly.

I'm also open to an invite if anyone is feeling charitable.

Re:JavaScript import maps are now supported cross-browser on Wednesday May 03, 2023 @12:04PM (#35804054)
You didn't ask me this question, but I work in Ruby, and off the top of my head, have no complaints about Bundler. Switching Ruby versions between projects is not something that is handled natively in any way (unsurprisingly?) and I know that I've struggled a lot with `rvm`, but since switching to *env (rbenv, pyenv, nodenv) I can safely say I do not have any struggles on that front either.
You mean you found the person who approaches bold claims with an appropriate amount of skepticism in a world increasingly inundated with hyperbolic or even outright misleading headlines? And then goes the extra mile to share their findings and constructively communicate their concerns to others who might also be subjected to the same hyperbole?

Yep, found them.

Re:Vercel announces Turbopack, the successor to Webpack on Tuesday October 25, 2022 @05:13PM (#33336258)
Yeah, as someone who focuses primarily on back-end but occasionally finds the need to dive into front-end, esbuild has virtually eliminated the pain I had with front-end bundling/packaging when I was using Webpack. At least it has in my situation, which involves mostly standard needs and very little customization.
Re:Passkeys.io – A Passkey Authentication Demo on Tuesday October 25, 2022 @12:24PM (#33332723)
If I understand what I've read correctly, 1Password nightlies already have support for webauthn, but it's certainly not something they advertise as ready for general usage.

Re:PayPal’s updated acceptable use policy [pdf] on Sunday October 02, 2022 @09:48PM (#33062533)
Venmo is owned by PayPal. PayPal is still the de-facto payment processor for online transactions where buyer/seller protections are desired/required.
Re:iOS 16 Available September 12th on Thursday September 08, 2022 @09:36PM (#32774288)
I think this strategy would be a winner if I thought that most people would bother listening to my mailbox message.
Re:iOS 16 Available September 12th on Wednesday September 07, 2022 @03:54PM (#32755837)
This is a great feature but it's a huge double-edged sword. I need to remember to turn it off when I'm expecting a call from an unpredictable number, and then I need to remember to turn it back on again after I receive the call. It would be great if I could turn it off for some number of hours or days.
Re:Silly Camera Numbers on Monday August 01, 2022 @12:18PM (#32308314)
I've always been interested in photography but really got into the weeds over the pandemic. Learning the exposure triangle (how aperture, shutter speed, and ISO are related/not related) has completely transformed how I think about cameras and taking photos. There is definitely some inherent mathematical/practical beauty in the meaning and relationships between these different camera settings.

I wouldn't want this comment to be interpreted as "shooting in manual is superior", in fact I would suggest against it in almost all cases - the deeper understanding will help you use nearly any camera in existence.

Re:The Floppotron 3.0 on Monday June 13, 2022 @03:21PM (#31730378)
I want very badly to listen to a bunch of old N64 game tracks on this thing.

This is the stuff of legends, nice work Paweł!

Amazing to hear this, looking forward to hearing more about the project.
Re:Discord will block NSFW servers on iOS on Wednesday April 14, 2021 @12:38AM (#26802989)
This sort of thing makes me wonder what could happen to Reddit clients with access to NSFW subreddits.
Re:The Sonoma County town that embraced its tent city on Monday April 12, 2021 @10:40PM (#26787590)
Great to see something positive relating to homelessness from my home town.
That would not be possible, no. You can use an iPhone and all of its phone-related features without an Apple account. You probably wouldn't be able to download new apps but it wouldn't retroactively prevent you from using any existing banking apps you might already have on your phone.
Re:CloudFlare seems to be having issues on Thursday February 18, 2021 @10:33PM (#26189323)
Yeah I have Discord issues and cannot connect to 1.1.1.1. I'm in CA and I know that someone from IA is also having the same problem.

EDIT: This being a Chicago problem and me being in California could probably be explained by my ISPs strange routing.

Re:Asdf – An Extendable Version Manager on Wednesday February 03, 2021 @09:54PM (#26022044)
I'm not understanding what you mean about *env. I use rbenv and I'm a maintainer of crenv for Crystal, I never have any issues with how they are implemented.

Can you be more specific? Maybe something's broken.

They do but it's really large. The Tech Report did an endurance test on SSDs 5-6 years ago [0]. The tests took 18 months before all 6 SSDs were dead.

Generally you're looking at hundreds of terabytes, if not more than a petabyte in total write capacity before the drive is unusable.

This is for older drives (~6 years old as I said), and I don't know enough about storage technology and where it's come since then to say, but I imagine things probably have not gotten worse.

Actually, as of Ruby 3, webrick is no longer a "bundled gem". You'll need to add it to your Gemfile and install it in order to use it.
Re:Hotwire: HTML over the Wire on Tuesday December 22, 2020 @08:41PM (#25513492)
The overview video touches on how some components of the Hey app are aggressively cached, like menu popups and such - so I imagine your "offline" capability comes from the fact that anything you need to run the application offline is just cached from the last online use.
