Re:I said no and Apple said yes on Tuesday September 22, 2026 @05:33AM (#49798565)
I think this should be called the ratchet theory of consent because it only tightens.
Re:I said no and Apple said yes on Tuesday September 22, 2026 @05:33AM (#49798564)
It feels like consent is being undermined in so many places. The anti-Meta Glasses ad with a photo of Jeffrey Epstein and the strap line "Glasses for people who don't do consent" hits the nail on the head for me. It's a profoundly inhuman stance in the name of profits.
Re:I said no and Apple said yes on Tuesday September 22, 2026 @05:26AM (#49798521)
If something can't be stopped, does that mean it's good? Reading accounts of the industrial revolution, huge swathes of nature in the north of England were destroyed. This article is an argument that it should be different, and is mostly focused on consent, not whether AI should exist or not (although the author's position on that is pretty clear too).

As a side note, I would argue you're being just as "emotional" (which I don't necessarily see as a bad thing despite your aspersions) by calling it "fanatic".

> half of the people you interact with have turned into meat proxies

Samuel Butler presaged this in Erewhon (1872) : "May not man himself become a sort of parasite upon the machines? An affectionate machine-tickling aphid?"

Re:The Beauty of Roundabouts on Wednesday September 16, 2026 @07:43AM (#49725276)
I live in the UK, drive occasionally in Spain due to Spanish in-laws, and agree wholeheartedly. I didn't know about the "outside lane has priority" rule though. I'd noticed it happening, but just thought it was a national quirk rather than gaming the system.
Re:The Beauty of Roundabouts on Wednesday September 16, 2026 @07:40AM (#49725214)
I enjoyed driving around Lanzarote in the Canary Islands because you'd occasionally see roundabouts with wind-driven sculptures by César Manrique - e.g. https://maps.app.goo.gl/mzK8by7shYJ2yvYC9 - an artist who lived there.

His house, built into the volcanic rock, was beautiful too: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C%C3%A9sar_Manrique#/media/Fil...

Why not both?
Re:Suspected sabotage causes major Netherlands rail disruption on Tuesday September 15, 2026 @07:21AM (#49710828)
These acts are subterfuge by their nature so you're not going to get Putin coming on TV and saying "lol it was me".

"There is no proof at this stage to link the flying bomb directly to Russia, which denies any role. But as well as the means and the motive, Moscow does have form. The BBC has seen details of the investigation into a plot in 2024 in which Russian-linked proxies in Poland and Lithuania not only handled drones and explosives but also delivered them to Germany."

It's a shame it's not about area then at least we could agree on Wales as a unit.
I think it's a fair example given how untruthful the US administration has been about whether the strait is "open" or not compared to the practical reality. Both would work with or without quotes, but the Iranian one is quoted. Still doesn't show systematic bias, but it's what I asked for.
Are there good examples of this from the BBC? Genuine question - no snark intended.
Re:On the Navier–Stokes Millennium Prize Problem on Wednesday September 09, 2026 @07:33AM (#49624751)
I think I'd care because the entity on the other side cares about the game in a similar way to me. It's not just the technical details of how the pieces move, it's a human interaction.
I think the main point here is that they don't want their data going through yet another cloud service.
I think the trouble with "opted in to training by default" is that there was no "opting", i.e. no choosing. I can't come up with a better suggestion off the top of my head though!
Re:How accurate have Ed Zitron's AI skeptic predictions been? on Wednesday September 02, 2026 @04:13AM (#49533323)
I think it's fair to say predictions that Altman and Amodei make should never be taken at face value, as well as Zitron. That's fine. But that doesn't have any bearing on Dan Luu's claims. This feels like an example of what he talks about in the article when saying that people respond to his claims by pointing at something entirely different. That is to say, whether AI enthusiasts make silly predictions doesn't mean that these companies aren't going to be profitable, or that any of Zitron's predictions are any good either.
Re:“I just chose words carefully” on Monday August 31, 2026 @03:29AM (#49506691)
I had the same thought, but I think the idea is that it didn't so much create a specific cadence as the cadence was a bit odd because the language needed to fit the visual layout rather than feel natural when spoken.
Re:Nitter project received cease and desist on Tuesday August 25, 2026 @02:27PM (#49438439)
In a UK context, journalists are on there because politicians are on there... and politicians are on there because journalists are on there. It's politicians that need to pull the plug - if they left en masse the journalists would go where they went, even if they stayed on X too - but nobody has the balls to do it. (Aside from one politician who for all practical purposes seems to do absolutely nothing: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/clyrx1ee2r4o).
I know what you mean, but it comes across - even to me, a paying customer who does really like Kagi - a bit like talking to someone involved in an MLM who can't wait to steer the conversation around to their product. I'd just prefer discussions to stay somewhat on topic. There's something interesting in this announcement in that, in my view, it deliberately omits an attribute that's a mild proxy for high-quality journalism, and I always find it a shame when the topic at hand is drowned out by generic boosterism.
The one thing I find slightly grating about links to Kagi blogs is the top comments are almost always "I use Kagi and it's great!" rather than about the content of the blog. And I'm a happy Kagi subscriber!

I get that this is an option, but what it really shows to me is how broken the model for journalism is. In my view you almost always only get good-quality journalism if you pay for it. (Somehow - e.g. the BBC is paid for by the licence fee, although I'm a bit despairing at the quality of the BBC these days, but perhaps that tracks the significant cuts to their budget...) I'm pretty sure that there's a technically viable solution to micropayments, but there are too many competing interests for anyone to settle on anything. We can't even agree on a single setting that says you don't want advertising cookies!

Re:I like 'em thick OR: an apology to my English teachers on Thursday August 20, 2026 @11:39AM (#49376169)
The best thing about gaining an appreciation of this aspect of life is it opens up so many extra pleasures. I can spend an entire day at the (free entry!) V&A in London and never be bored. Likewise with a great book (when my 11-year-old isn't around!)
Re:OpenRouter is joining Stripe on Thursday August 20, 2026 @05:01AM (#49372144)
Sorry - that probably came across as more passive-aggressive that I mean it. Just wanted to point out that guideline. People have easy access to AI, so they can always ask it for a summary if they want to and it doesn't really add anything to the discussion.
Re:Old.reddit.com is now login only on Thursday August 20, 2026 @04:34AM (#49371953)
I was hoping for this too. I spend far too much unfocused time on there. It'll be interesting to see if I crack and start logging in though. There are definitely posts I've found useful on Reddit, which would probably be the gateway into it. (Although I suppose I could always use the www version if I end up on there via a search result).

Re:The Amazon Tax on Tuesday August 18, 2026 @10:56AM (#49346570)
I'm in the UK, and I've found that pretty much anything I can get on Amazon I can also get at John Lewis. It's probably more expensive - I'm in the lucky situation that I'm not particularly price-sensitive - but I much prefer the feeling of buying from JL. Very occasionally I'll buy something from Amazon like photo paper or some small gizmo that's difficult to find elsewhere. The one kind of physical shop I really miss is the kind of place where you can buy one screw, nail or picture hook etc. I hate the number of 10-packs of things I get where I only need one. (Luckily I live in a block of flats where there's a good community, so often I get those for free just by asking on our Signal group!)
Re:An Update on Leaving Gmail for Fastmail on Tuesday August 18, 2026 @06:42AM (#49343744)
Fair point, but my desire is for "good enough" rather than perfect. I know my emails go into other systems, it's more about feeling that my inbox is hosted by a company solely based in a jurisdiction where it can't be compelled to do anything by the US government. It's also a matter of principle - I want to move as much of my infrastructure as I can away from US-based services because I don't trust things not to get worse there.
Re:An Update on Leaving Gmail for Fastmail on Tuesday August 18, 2026 @06:36AM (#49343712)
Thanks.
Re:An Update on Leaving Gmail for Fastmail on Monday August 17, 2026 @05:54PM (#49338221)
I'm a happy user of Fastmail, but I would prefer a properly EU-hosted service. (Fastmail now have data storage in the EU, but much of their infrastructure is in the US and data still passes through there - something that they're open about, but I'd prefer not to happen). The last time I looked at mailbox.org the offer wasn't nearly as good as Fastmail in terms of storage, catch-all email addresses etc, but I took another look recently and it seems to be better. Does anyone here have first-hand experience of mailbox.org?
Re:Self hosted email continues to steeply decline on Monday August 17, 2026 @09:53AM (#49330898)
LLM-generated content is not allowed in HN comments, but it doesn't mention submitting links to LLM-generated content. This is the only mention in the guidelines: "Don't post generated text or AI-edited text. HN is for conversation between humans."
