Re:Lula wins election after final votes tallied on Monday October 26, 2026 @03:41AM (#50240401)
That’s making quite a mental leap. What’s wrong is changing the rules halfway during a voting day, specially in one of the largest countries in the world with uneven logistics.

Polls were closed in some places, voting boxes sealed, and had to be reopened.

While not necessarily bad, it can create fraud suspicions. Just arrange a longer voting time from the get go. Else it looks you are stalling and boosting turnout out for your side.

PS it’s quite common in some countries to put people on buses and make them vote in exchange of money.

Re:Retirement Is Dead on Wednesday September 02, 2026 @03:25PM (#49541152)
I am a Gen X. My grandmother, who was born in 1906 and passed on in 1994, worked at home, cooked, cleaned for most of her life. He had 3-4 dresses in her closet, and whenever I visited she gave some money to go buy a small bottle of Sprite for lunch.

My parents define their retirement as cruises, traveling, etc. My mother has 3 closets full of clothes, the latest iPhone and iPad to check Facebook…

Both generations worked very hard, and I don’t want to criticize them. I keep telling my father and mother that they should burn and enjoy all their money while they can.

My point is not to criticize a generation, but to try to contextualize that a comfortable wealthy retirement is relatively new in our social concept, and so far it seems more as a one-off trick that only baby boomers pulled after the huge economic growth post 70s, than a sustainable economic pattern.

Disgusting. A drop in a bucket, quickly recovered via tax breaks, government spending, etc.

Meta employees should be accountable for this. And stock buyers too.

You could choose to work elsewhere. You could choose to invest in something else.

Many here are shocked when a company does not observe GNU licensing, but are OK working, using or investing in such an evil organization.

>> If you are still working there, you are complicit in acting in a company that is actively seeking to control a populous.

+1.

I see your point and share it up to a point… but how does it square with the full western economies gambling all or nothing on AI?

Re:Claude for Small Business on Thursday May 14, 2026 @05:08AM (#48132852)
Maybe it’s a process. Many of the transitions you mentioned did bring shitty apps (not all of them, the ones replacing tech for tech were mostly ok, the ones democratizing dev did come with a quality drop), but eventually Darwinism will take effect and trim the long tail.

Coding per se is not hard. Proper engineering is. I do hope this change brings a change in focus (people train in algorithms, efficiency, solid development patterns) but I am afraid it won’t be the case.

Re:Claude for Small Business on Thursday May 14, 2026 @05:03AM (#48132819)
I feel like it will be like going back to the 80s, when PCs became a norm and most programmers and hobbyists could code without the need of a University or a Corporation. Thousands of shareware apps you had to navigate, everyone trying to solve the same problems from different angles..

I do agree quality will be missed, and shadow IT will be again a big issue like at the end of the 80s and early 90s.

Re:Blackholing My Email on Wednesday April 08, 2026 @03:52AM (#47686825)
Also Fastmail user for many years, with custom domain. I use specific email addresses per service with Bitwarden’s recent feature (by hand before this). My personal address is shared with few people.

I set up specific folders based on aliases. Thanks to GDPR I have found a few companies that have shared / sold my data illegally (the company-assigned address popped up somewhere else) and managed to have them delete my data right away.

I fret losing my domain, and that my recovery addresses are Gmail and Outlook - which could be lost at any time.

I would like to see government issue a lifetime inbox in the same way they issue you a SSN, a passport or driver license so I can have that as last line recovery.

But on the other hand, if we had that politicians would likely enforce mandatory identification across all web services…

Re:The Joy of Numbered Streets on Friday April 03, 2026 @04:04AM (#47624252)
Some Latin American cities were designed as grids (100m x 100m squares), and numbering of blocks spans a hundred per block (first block is 0 to 100 house numbers).

So if you are at 200s in one street and are looking for a house at 1200s, you know you are a kilometer away.

This with numbered streets is awesome to navigate. Buenos Aires has the first, but named streets. La Plata in Argentina has both.

If you are into maps see an air pic of La Plata.

https://c8.alamy.com/comp/2X59727/detailed-map-of-la-plata-c...

I bought two office phones for 30 euros each (Yealink) and set up a VOIP plan with voip.ms for my 8 and 9 YO kids.

I recently got divorced, so there is a phone at each house in case they want to reach out to the other parent directly. Ex and I did not want the kids to feel their right to reach the other parent needed to ask for permission

Family has Softphone in their mobiles, so the full family is a speed dial away.

I also whitelist numbers they can dial out.

So far it’s working like a charm, they love it.

Most fund managers have an IQ of 50. And they get paid by fees. They will put your pension money into OpenAI without a doubt, as it’s easier to participate, crash and shrug that stay out.

“Nobody got fired for hiring McKinsey” in the PE bros era.

Delisting and going private is always an option if you want to go at your own pace and talk to your investors 1:1.

Re:The TSA's New $45 Fee to Fly Without ID Is Illegal on Tuesday February 03, 2026 @06:21AM (#46869529)
Seems quite dangerous. In my country, this was the norm for local flights - usually smaller planes, 1-2hr flights. It was common that if you could not attend a meeting, a colleague would go with your ticket. Nobody cared.

Then one plane crashed. And some passengers weren't insured, as they were not officially on the plane. Those families could not get a body back, nor any compensation, as the company said that they could not prove they were on the plane.

I don't read the small print of IATA when getting a ticket, maybe I should someday.

This time with more prostitution!
The problem itself is not IP protection…. They tried that, and were always chasing behind - servers changed week after week, ban after ban.

So, misteriously (suspicions of bribery abound) now they block full blocks of internet preventively, bringing down innocent and paying customers with them. From Law Enforcement to privatized Minority Report.

Thats what people dislike. If you are a private entity and loose money to piracy, use the legal framework to solve it. Don’t override it with lobbying

Additionally I find that most Hyperscalers are trying to lock you in, by tailoring services which are industry standard with custom features which end up building roots and making a multi-vendor or lift and shift problematic.

Need to keep eyes peeled at all levels or the organization as many of these enter through day-to-day…

... and in the process we will deteriorate the performance of millions of users and hurt our brand as a top class experience company?

Don't really care who is to blame, but they should have identified this, and either warn developers, or warn users. Or provide a tool for identifying guilty apps in your machine, and let users decide how to proceed.
