Re:It wasn't AI that flipped Proton's charge on Sunday November 01, 2026 @04:05PM (#50329878)
I think Proton leaderships saw that 'email with pgp wrapper outside hyperscaler servers' is a crowded space today, so now they are doing the whole 'proton workspace365' and they are falling short at it (I'm a paying user and for my own personal needs the workspace like features are bearable, but not good, unlike email/pass which are ok) so they are getting nervous.

If it was any other company we wouldn't even care, but if your marketing is 'big cloud is bad look at us we are so moral and so caring and respectful with you and your data' and they shit the bed like this in front of the users that are paying because they bought on this vision...

> We need social media less than before, because you can talk to the bot for information instead (and for human connection, there's still the old-fashioned solution: going out and talking to people in real life).

I kinda believe this. The web for collaboration, work, dumping out information and doomscrolling is a great tool, but I think is bad for any kind of socializing or 'communitizing' at a human level, where you are forced to treat humans as such instead of looking at some transduced digital representation of a real person in the form or chars or pixels prone to dehumanization.

A markovian prussian rubber duck?

This is pure dev astrology, but in the subsidized Sonnet 3.5 times in copilot I'm guilty of prompting 'You're Uncle Bob make this legacy java services read like a book top down with the cleanest code' just for fun and I might have learnt something and had some fun so I'm not judging.

Re:Tsrs: A Port of TypeScript to Rust on Tuesday October 20, 2026 @10:57AM (#50167405)
I use oxc tooling and it's great to see the rust rewrite singularity in action and get to ride the fastest horses, but I would like that they made a branch for 7.2 as experiment to see how it compares. Maybe this ends in a win for Microsoft, they could cut operating expenses by keeping just Anders Hejlsberg in a hammock reciting invariants to claudpilot.

To me adding 'tldr' at beginning or end of the prompt whenever I need is enough. Sometimes I want more explanatory responses.
tmux is great, specially when you need persistence in a remote server where you don't want or can't install any other software, and when you are stuck with some 2010 terminal emulator.

But if you have control over your setup, I would use a capable terminal and ditch in-band multiplexers that sit in the middle of the process and your terminal eating up escape sequences and native features while adding latency. Then use a separate tool for session persistence (I like zmx but there are more for this).

Much of their time is occupied with mundane chores, meetings, or various kinds of breaks and interruptions. Additional time is taken in becoming familiar with new applications or new devel- opment environments.

> One of the key problems in analysis and specification of systems is that the eventual users do not have a good idea of what they want the system to do.

> Automatic Programming The term "automatic programming" has been used for many years to refer to the process by which an executable program may be produced from nonproce- dural specifications of the task to be performed. Some limited forms of automatic programming are already available and more will become available in the medium term. Over the longer term, it will be possible for pro- grammers to create running programs by providing a specification of program functions and outputs, without having to proceed with a detailed program design or with the production of code.

TIL about the name of this phenomenon. I see this always in the context of "terminal online anime fan" but it made me think and look into other occurrences of similar parasocial behavior like the early Sherlock Holmes fandom.

With this current social and tech trends I think we are going to see more Pygmalionic SexBots startups in next cohorts.

Re:Smart people don't think others are stupid on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @09:13AM (#50087237)
I read and love all from Derek. I like that he always makes you think through, even when starting from simple and stupid ideas.

Personally I tend to dismiss myself as stupid, because many times I detect I'm being misguided by lazyness and not wanting to think things through, which obviously makes me feel so smart that I could spend all day trapped in this stupid paradox.

I have some personal projects started with AI from day 0, which I use and come back from time to time to update with new ideas, features, product direction, explicitly choosing deps/tooling, etc. I will never say that I wrote it, but make or build doesn't seem that far fetched. Maybe I just generated it? Incantated? Reverse-entropied it?
Re:Ask HN: What is the current trajectory of a senior engineer? on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @07:21AM (#50085905)
I'm no senior but I think that if software (and rest of disciplines possible soon to be hit as hard) can still be "wrong", if you can still mess it up even with machine assistance, people doing software still have a place. This doesn't mean that we need to achieve absolute perfection to be deprecated, maybe we just become accepting of machine generated good enough artifacts. I'm betting on humanity infinite nonconformism instincts so I can have a job some more years!

Re:Redesigning Source Control at Anthropic on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @05:56PM (#50079447)
Good point, I wasn't clear enough about my thoughts here. I tried to say that in a multiple commits/s world the review might not be direct line/hunk review of the code but a more "indirect", abstracted or higher level human oversight, which is how I understand an intent review is.

I'm not saying that Anthropic here close their eyes and tell Claude to ship and that in the future there will be no code review at all, but that if we have 30K merges/day, human review seems to need to be done at some higher level, likely AI assisted like it seems to be done with their Antique code review tool mentioned in the post.

Re:Redesigning Source Control at Anthropic on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @02:03PM (#50075964)
Excuse me for throwing up this stupid idea, but if code changes per unit of time keep growing at this rate and are not slowing down with infinite merging demand, it seems that this repo will be in a constant state of continuous change and we constantly roll forward with automated code and obviously no direct human supervision, then why even have source control? Why not just let software be fluid and, like Heraclitus river, never step twice in the same repo.

Re:I'm in a Meeting on Friday October 09, 2026 @07:36AM (#50019063)
This has real demand, I ended up in the Gitlab secondary youtube channel one day, ordering by most views, and I found a video [0] of a seemingly normal uninteresting meeting with millions of views. Turns out people were using this as an excuse for looking like they were busy. They disabled comments now but I saved some of them because I thought it was hilarious:

I play this when I need my family to leave me alone - so helpful 4.5K I play this when I pretend to be busy. This meeting is literally about anything you want it to be about lol 1.5K I love that we all arrived at this video for the same reason 2.6K Every now and then I'll pause it at a good point in between them talking to make my own voice heard contributing to the "meeting" lol. Gets the full effect in! And the beautiful thing is their conversation just flows with it like they heard me lol. 562
