I've heard that joke from Linux users when it comes to anti-cheat.

Which OS is better for gaming? Windows or Linux?

A: Linux, because you can't play League of Legends

It's not that they have anything against them, it's giving their customers who don't want to see them the choice not to.
A bit of NFT madness to go with the Blockchain stuff too.

Did you read the documentation I linked? There's also high/medium/low settings that use XDG signals to determine if focus should change.
Re:Nothing works and everyone is euphoric on Friday July 24, 2026 @07:12AM (#49033896)
What? You can set it to let apps steal the focus you want. I can set it to not allow any apps to steal focus. How are we not both satisfied?

> How would that global app ban help? You do want the application to steal focus when necessary

Maybe you do. I don't. With this setting we can both be hapopy.

Maybe it's a hazy memory, but from 2007-2011 my main computer was a MacBook Pro. I swear in that era, when an app wanted attention it would bounce in the dock endlessly.

That was annoying, but it let you finish doing what you were doing until you were ready to switch focus.

Re:Nothing works and everyone is euphoric on Friday July 24, 2026 @06:29AM (#49033527)
> I opened Slack on macOS, the icon kept bouncing in the dock for a few seconds. I got impatient, switched to Ghostty, and started typing. Just then, the Slack window appeared, stole focus from Ghostty and the git pull command was sent to the group chat.

One of my absolute favourite features on KDE Plasma with Wayland is the global setting to control what can steal focus. It works wonderfully, and I always miss it when I have to use my work mac or windows computers.

See here for docs, under "Focus stealing prevention" - https://docs.kde.org/trunk_kf6/en/kwin/kcontrol/windowbehavi...

Re:The room the economy can't see on Friday June 19, 2026 @03:29PM (#48602276)
You think that hanging out playing video games with friends lacks an appeal for young people?

Are you for real?

Re:The room the economy can't see on Friday June 19, 2026 @10:56AM (#48599364)
> The simpler explanation here is that board games are still a niche hobby

The article says "games", which I took to be more likely to be video games. These are teenagers after all. And if they're safe and goofing around gaming in a youth club, they're less likely to be doing antisocial behaviour on the street.

I've thought this for a while, and I summarise it as: If you want me to take time to read it, you should take the time to write it.
It isn't a meaningless word, and like my sibling poster I do wonder if that sentence is astroturfed by the junk food corpos.

The [NOVA classification](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nova_classification) has definitions for various levels of food processing.

Yeah there's some weirdness too, it's heavily optimised for the Deck, low rez textures, low shadow quality etc.

So if you force it to run on your Linux desktop you don't get an experience commensurate with your hardware.

And now I'm older with a well paying job I find myself having to do the opposite calculation.

Things like, "Actually I will get an uber instead of the bus, so I can spend more time at the party."

Pensions or teenagers?

Wow, calflegal. That's not just good insight, it's smart thinking.

I think you're correct — there's a lot of LLM generated content here!

Oh this feels very 2600. Makes me wish I hadn't cancelled my print sub a while back.
Do you not pay to reimport the (e.g.) Colombian market cars back into the USA?
Wouldn't import tax make that nonviable?

It's telling that to defend Apple against the charge of stagnation you immediately attacked Windows.
Re:Cloudflare Global Network experiencing issues on Tuesday November 18, 2025 @10:26AM (#45967500)
I took a screenshot of the graph in cloudflare when I switched on the bot challenges.

https://i.ibb.co/qHCJyY7/image.png

I wrote the below to explain to our users what was happening, so apologies if the language is too simple for a HN reader.

- 0630, we switched our DNS to proxy through CF, starting the collection of data, and implemented basic bot protections

- Unfortunately whatever anti-bot magic they have isn't quite having the effect, even after two hours.

- 0830, I sign in and take a look at the analytics. It seems like <SITE NAME> is very popular in Vietnam, Brazil, and Indonesia.

- 0845, I make it so users from those countries have to pass a CF "challenge". This is similar to a CAPTCHA, but CF try to make it so there's no "choosing all the cars in an image" if they can help it.

- So far 0% of our Asian audience have passed a challenge.

Re:Cloudflare Global Network experiencing issues on Tuesday November 18, 2025 @09:05AM (#45966168)
I did! It's very cool tech. However for our config it was easier to slap CF in front of it.

I will say one very appealing use of Anubis I'd love to try is using it as a Traefik middleware to protect services running in docker containers.

Ha, yeah. They seemed to mostly be in SE Asia.
Re:Cloudflare Global Network experiencing issues on Tuesday November 18, 2025 @07:00AM (#45964136)
It actually is.

I run a small video game forum with posts going back to 2008. We got absolutely smashed by bots scraping for training data for LLMs.

So I put it behind Cloudflare and now it's down. Ho hum.

Whilst I appreciate you can do this, and some people have programs they need Windows for, I am sick of fighting my OS.

One thing I realised when I switched to desktop Linux was just how quiet it was.

It just sits there until I want to do something. It doesn't try and trick me into changing my default browser, or put adverts in my program launcher, or harvest my data.

It just runs my programs when I ask it to.

Re:KDE Connect: Enabling communication between all your devices on Wednesday October 22, 2025 @03:08AM (#45665773)
I use KDE Connect and discovered a feature I didn't know about the other day.

I was watching a youtube video on my computer and my phone rang. The video automatically paused whilst I had my call, then when I hung up, the video continued.

Totally seamless. The kind of thing Apple would show off as part of their "continuity" between macos and iOS.

Wow Amarok, that takes me back. I used to use KDE in the late 00s and it was head and shoulders over other music apps.
I'm absolutely loving KDE since I returned to desktop Linux after a long absence.

What really shocks me is how few of the big distros make KDE a default or "first class" DE choice. If I was a novice user coming from Windows, I'd much prefer KDE, which if you stick to the GUI is very navigable and similar in some ways.
