Re:Ask HN: Are hackathons still worth doing? on Thursday February 19, 2026 @07:49PM (#47082165)
Exactly this. At a recent hackathon, I spent the bulk of my time actually engineering, building custom model architecture in Lua, wrangling a dataset, and waiting on training loops. The winning project? A slick UI wrapped around a basic LLM API call.

It’s incredibly frustrating. The incentive structure at these events has completely shifted away from actual technical complexity toward whoever can build the prettiest ChatGPT wrapper in 6 hours..

> Luckily for Apple, Windows 11 is not exactly in a position to attract switchers.

Yes, but Linux is finally in that position, not to mention we're seeing silicon from intel and amd that can compete with the M series on mobile devices.

Re:Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (January 2026) on Sunday January 11, 2026 @02:32PM (#46579028)
I’m working on a real-time tracker for the Canadian Parliament.

While the official data is technically public, it's practically inaccessible (buried in XML feeds and legacy sites).

Phase 1 was building a modern ingestion engine and freeing the information to make it more accessible. The goal is to make legislative data as accessible as sports stats.

I'm almost ready to launch the MVP; I'm just doing some bugfixes and testing the database now! (If you want an early look at the MVP, my email is in my profile.)

The next phase is what I'm most excited about: visualizing this data and using LLMs to provide insights.

ugh, I remember when the comments here were better than reddit.
Re:Bazzite: The next generation of Linux gaming on Sunday November 30, 2025 @12:35AM (#46094123)
I've been using Linux forever (back to the mailed Ubuntu CDs days).

I installed this begrudgingly after fighting edge cases with Waydroid on Arch. It's the first "batteries included" distro I've actually liked. I usually hate the "omakase" approach, but the setup here is pretty much how I would've done it myself.

Side note: GNOME + Waydroid is the best experience I've had with a desktop OS on a tablet. Finding tools like scrcpy included out of the box was a nice surprise, too.

Re:Tuxedo Computers Cancels Snapdragon X1 Linux Laptop on Friday November 21, 2025 @07:07PM (#46010636)
The iGPU in Panther Lake has me pretty excited about intel for the first time in a long time. Lunar Lake proved they’re still relevant; Panther Lake will show whether they can actually compete.
Re:Steam Machine on Thursday November 13, 2025 @01:29PM (#45918590)
oh no, this again.. I remember checking out HoloISO when I was looking for SteamOS at launch… did a quick lookup on the creator and yeah, turns out he's a racist furry (literally)..
Yeah, I’ve been noticing an alarming number of casks marked to be depreciated… at the same time gatekeeper has gotten so restrictive it won’t let me (easily) open a video files that I downloaded from the internet
Re:Steam Machine on Wednesday November 12, 2025 @05:10PM (#45907533)
That said, when are we going to get a public release for SteamOS? …There’s a joke somewhere about them reaching SteamOS 3
Re:Steam Frame on Wednesday November 12, 2025 @02:23PM (#45904911)
Interesting they went with the 8 Gen 3 instead of something like the X Elite. From what I’ve seen, the 8 Gen 3 actually outperforms the Elite in emulation and running PC games. I wonder if that factored into the decision.

Couldn’t agree more, if you’re pitching Linux to a non-technical user, you need a gentler off-ramp, not a cliff dive. LibreOffice is a UI time capsule..more archaeology than productivity. Most millennials would think they’d accidentally opened a flight simulator.
Re:M5 MacBook Pro on Wednesday October 15, 2025 @08:55PM (#45600296)
Thanks for sharing Aerospace, can’t believe I overlooked it! It’s like finding out someone fixed half the things that make macOS feel like a beautiful prison .Somehow it makes the whole OS feel less… Apple-managed.
Re:M5 MacBook Pro on Wednesday October 15, 2025 @04:12PM (#45597810)
I thought the same thing when I saw the M5 in the news today. It’s not that I hate macOS 26, hate implies passion.. what I feel is closer to disappointment.

The problem is their philosophy. Somewhere along the way, Apple decided users should be protected from themselves. My laptop now feels like a leased car with the hood welded shut. Forget hardware upgrades, I can’t even speed up animations without disabling SIP. You shouldn’t have to jailbreak your own computer just to make it feel responsive.

Their first-party apps have taken a nosedive too. They’ve stopped being products and started being pipelines, each one a beautifully designed toll booth for a subscription. What used to feel like craftsmanship now feels like conversion-rate optimization.

I’m not anti-Apple. I just miss when their devices felt like instruments, not appliances. When you bought a Mac because it let you create, not because it let Apple curate.

8GB of VRAM just doesn’t cut it for new AAA games, and the 5000 series had a bunch of driver issues, which kind of kills its main advantage over the 9060 or B580
Re:Canada votes for Mark Carney as prime minister on Thursday May 01, 2025 @09:01PM (#43865120)
You clearly aren't Canadian, We are no fans of the elected liberal party but we have zero tolerance for the hate filled, anti-trans, anti-woke, anti-indigenous, anti-Palestinian bullshit spewed by the conservative leader. I could go on... So, while I wouldn't say I'm excited about the results I'll will - today at least - feel slightly more at ease.
Re:Canada votes for Mark Carney as prime minister on Tuesday April 29, 2025 @03:46PM (#43837178)
It's so interesting how few Americans are bothered by his talk of annexing allies like Canada or Greenland. Do people here think that the tariffs on Canada are about fentanyl? or Greenland is essential for "national security"?
Re:Canada votes for Mark Carney as prime minister on Tuesday April 29, 2025 @03:42PM (#43837126)
National Sovereignty? I know a lot of Canadians who were lifelong liberals who were planning on voting conservative this election... until trump opened his mouth.

I wanted change—but the choice was between someone who ignores the cost of living crisis and someone who would actively make everything worse. Poilievre couldn’t even pass a security clearance. I didn’t support all of Trudeau’s policies, but Carney isn’t Trudeau—and pretending they’re interchangeable is just lazy politics.

Re:Canada votes for Mark Carney as prime minister on Tuesday April 29, 2025 @03:39PM (#43837080)
Elections Canada is simply amazing!

Funny story from last night: the Conservative leader’s own riding had the longest ballot in Canadian history — 90 candidates! Even though it was one of the earlier ridings to close, the results weren’t confirmed until this morning. I’m guessing the sheer size of the ballot had something to do with the delay.

Re:Pope Francis Has Died on Monday April 21, 2025 @01:06PM (#43754111)
Though I’m neither Catholic nor especially religious, you don’t have to be devout to recognize that Pope Francis has been a powerful force for good. From his warm outreach to refugees and the homeless to his landmark environmental encyclical Laudato Si’, he has consistently championed the poor, fostered interfaith dialogue and empathy.
Re:AMD's Strix Halo – Under the Hood on Friday March 14, 2025 @12:35PM (#43364287)
Any word on putting that in a mobile device? So far there’s only a hp business laptop and a gaming tablet… none of which appeal to the “MacBook crowd”
Re:AMD RDNA 4 – AMD Radeon RX 9000 Series Graphics Cards on Friday February 28, 2025 @12:09PM (#43207908)
They've got a pretty amazing apu that just came out and competes with the M series macbooks based on early benchmarks. The name of this APU: AMD Ryzen AI MAX 300 "Strix Halo"
Coincidentally, construction isn’t set to start until late November 2028—convenient timing. If this mess blows over, they can quietly backpedal and carry on like nothing happened.
Re:Valve releases Team Fortress 2 game code on Tuesday February 18, 2025 @03:42PM (#43094829)
Don't think that's the case anymore, "Game Porting Toolkit 2" seemingly opened the floodgates on gaming on a mac.. It's up to the developers if they think it's worth the time/ effort; but with how great apple the hardware is, and how easy it is to port a game, I think we're going to see a huge influx of mac gaming.
Re:Valve releases Team Fortress 2 game code on Tuesday February 18, 2025 @03:14PM (#43094455)
The fact that they did this before bothering to recompile it for 64-bit Mac says a lot—Valve clearly doesn’t see Apple as a friendly place to do business. Makes sense, with Apple trying to lock game devs into the App Store.
I can’t believe I didn’t make the connection—both of those games are in my top 10. A big part of why I love them is how deeply immersive their worlds are. Dunwall and City 17 don’t just look great; they feel alive, with atmosphere, detail, and storytelling woven into every corner. No other game has quite captured that same level of immersion.
Re:Ask HN: What books influenced your moral compass? on Thursday February 06, 2025 @06:20PM (#42967492)
Here are a few books that come to mind:

Siddhartha – I highly recommend doing some background reading to get the most out of it. Everything in the book is a metaphor. For example, the question of whether to take the "Big Boat or Small Boat?" down the river is actually a deeper reflection on personal choices in the pursuit of nirvana or enlightenment.

When You Hear Hoofbeats, Think of a Zebra

Slaughterhouse-Five – Honestly, just read some Kurt Vonnegut. He’s probably the greatest American writer of all time.
Also, here's a great list: https://i.redd.it/cjuf9k91d6g71.jpg .I’m sure I’ve missed some of my favorites, but I just wanted to share because reading has given me so much perspective on the world. I’m really grateful it’s something I enjoy.
As a Canadian in Ontario, it’s unsettling to see half a million jobs on the line over tariffs that seem to have no rational justification. The worst part? There’s no sign of sanity returning anytime soon. I’d like to believe this is just a temporary lapse, but everything from the past few days suggests otherwise.
If memory serves me right, it's the Apple S8 chip used in their watches, built on a 7nm process.
