At this point we need faraday cages. Shit.
Press increasingly started abdicating their job when journalism was no longer financially independent of the people and institutions it is supposed to scrutinize.

I was about to write s/caffeine/theobromine/ when I double-checked and learned that theobromine is a metabolite of caffeine. Mind blown.
Re:Tasks as Code: Move Your Tickets into the Repository on Monday October 26, 2026 @11:39PM (#50254475)
>The source of truth is the code

this doesn't feel true anymore

Not completely sarcasm, I left unsaid that the bed design is a result of the "cutting edge styling", they would've had to change the styling on the back side at the very least to make a bit more practical truck.

And I think they should have moderated the style on the back. Gone for more of a mullet LOL.

Re:Websites Should Be Printable on Monday October 26, 2026 @08:50AM (#50242742)
Everybody is focusing on responding to the title

but I thought this bit was far more interesting:

> I read a lot of printed papers these days. While I enjoy reading on a laptop as much as the next guy, marking up a printed document engages me better. Also, there's something about sitting with a whiteboard and a printed document that makes me rightly feel like I'm doing something important.

would be interesting to consider a totally new workflow of automatically printing off any "read later" stuff, including interesting HN posts.. and then actually sit down and read the paper, no distractions.

this is for the authors/publishers of tuhat writing platform you mean?

Take my upvote, that made me snort chuckle.
I think Cybertruck's mistake ultimately boils down to the bed design - it just wasn't practical enough.

Smart dog!
must be proof we're in a simulation!

FYI, Grok Bot is supposedly powered by Opus 5.5 as well.

John B. Calhoun made the opposite discovery in his 1958–1962 rat experiments https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Behavioral_sink

and then replicated it with mice in 1968-1972

Re:Starcraft: Ashfall on Tuesday October 20, 2026 @07:52PM (#50174305)
There was a youtube video that analyzed those game ads and I think they found that the games being shown in the ad are mini-games within the real game.

Supposedly the ads need to be based on some element of the game, so what they do is they make mini-games and use that as advertising material. It's all a tactic to get people to their actual game.

It's basically bait and switch.

What? https://github.com/jaxvanyang/comic-shanns-nerd is a great font for coding, I personally find it more readable at smaller sizes compared to the other popular ones like JetBrains mono
Re:William Gibson and the Trademarking of Cyberspace on Monday October 19, 2026 @04:18AM (#50149735)
uh exactly? I'm saying the same thing as https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=50148049

metaverse is the term coined by Neal Stephenson. Not 'meta'

Re:William Gibson and the Trademarking of Cyberspace on Monday October 19, 2026 @12:48AM (#50148478)
conflating metaverse and meta
Re:You could have invented transformers from memory on Sunday October 18, 2026 @09:35PM (#50147362)
You too?
Not sure if you even realized it but you pointed directly at the very problem with the American version of this scenario.

The tipping.

It's fucked because it distorts the relationship between staff and customers, not to mention it lets businesses get away with underpaying their staff.

Fortunately Japan doesn't do this.

I guess it wouldn't be surprising for people prone to AI psychosis to be attracted to working at the frontier labs, resulting companies that are heavily in the throes of mass AI psychosis.

Being tongue-in-cheek here.

Re:Jev Meets the Trolley Problem on Friday October 16, 2026 @05:09AM (#50115989)
from the wikipedia on the trolley problem this is mentioned:

> In 2017 a group led by Michael Stevens, a YouTuber known for his brand Vsauce, performed the first realistic trolley-problem experiment. Subjects were placed alone in what they thought was a train-switching station, and shown footage they believed to be real (but was pre-recorded) of a train going down a track, with five workers on the main track, and one on the secondary track; the participants had the option to pull the lever to divert the train toward the secondary track. Five of the seven participants did not pull the lever.[28][29]

That means in real life it's going to be closer to 0.286 (2/7) than 0.75. Human ethics likely can only be accurately derived from paying attention to the instinctive reactions over survey-based approach.

Re:Why is every rationalist blog post way too long? on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @06:07PM (#50096099)
The verbosity of the entire post can be condensed down to just this bit:

> verbosity is a substitute for thoroughness

Clearly OP author is far too wordy as well!

I bet all the new Omarchy users will really appreciate this one!
the post mentions ncspot
Great problem to work on!
Interestingly gmail suddenly started loading dog slow in Safari for me. I'm on an older version of Safari so that could be a factor - so bizarre though. I wouldn't put it past them to be doing that deliberately.
Re:The Dock on Mac, from OS 10 to macOS 27 on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @06:48AM (#50069645)
I agree 10.8/10.9 is the sweet spot.
