I recommend artificial turf soccer fields. They're padded! They're flat. They're good for watching games, or people watching too. And you can pretend to be a winger or striker, constantly measuring the angle and distance to the far right corner, because who doesn't want to be like the GOAT?
I don't mean to rain on your parade...just want to say enjoy it now, and remember it later. Good luck.
Yup, 64GB iPhone 11 Pro still going strong. A wee bit slow however, so...a new 17? Have to upgrade eventually.
Hence, the "dark forest" theory of the Internet is no longer theory.
I met him in a "Bark at the Moon" contest and shook his hand. Not sure he noticed, lol! Anyway, Bark at the Moon is one of his top songs! Here's howling in sorrow for you Ozzy, RIP.
I wish I had kept, and could still use, my brown plastic PowerBook...I forgot what model that was but...a brown laptop?!? It was soooo cool! :)
Wish you could swap innards like you can swap engines with (some) cars.
Exactly this. The need to make money from a thing may well eliminate the value one derives from the thing, and even add negatives such as stress, etc.
And, "I'm not a cat."
(Except sometimes maybe as a NPC)
And after the walk, talk with an intelligent human dialog partner to exchange ideas and concepts that illuminate the schemas. Heck, walk and talk together! :)
What's old is new again! :)
For more info on Lyme and related difficult to identify diseases, NYT columnist Ross Douhat wrote a book about his experience w/ Lyme and his ongoing adaptations. It's called...
The Deep Places: A Memoir of Illness and Discovery
Agreed. We are now "back" to laws for thee but not for me.
Just want to say I LOVE the fact this word, and its meaning, is now in the public eye. Call 'em out! It's fun!
As we used to say, "two faces and a ball."
Gary is harsh or extreme, even, but the point largely stands:
https://garymarcus.substack.com/p/what-if-generative-ai-turn...Personally I think there will be things that gen-AI is useful for, such as rapid education for beginners and learning or performance feedback mechanisms. Those use cases are promising, and still in development. Hopefully they'll be cost-effective as well.
As a kid, I didn't understand charisma. So I got a natural 18 for my D&D fighter, big deal. I'ma gonna run the goblins through with my long sword now...
As an adult, I assess every person I meet through the charisma lens first, if not almost first, because I think it's the foundation of your reputation with others. Seems it's almost magic.
I get to "enjoy" low-frequency bass from musical events at a public park about a half mile away from my home. It sounds to me like someone in a car just outside my window, just one of those cars that go boom. Sadly, it's just people having their brand of fun. No defense against being in the natural frequency node.
I sort of miss my Canon EOS 1 at 10 fps (film) when shooting sports. "If you saw it, you missed it."
Ambition, an elixir of youth for me, for so long. Then (of course!), the arc began to flatten, the sandwich (generation) turned out to be more than a foot-long, and, that thing I took for granted forever...health.
This is where I think we humans must be connected, committed, and invested in something larger than ourselves to transform ambition into...transformation?
I thought I fit my big-boy pants. I see I need to consider a tailor now.
OmniDiskSweeper (I know, not exactly the same thing, but still...)
100% - I used to sell/evangelize/promote/pitch the vision of the educational non-profit I used to work for every. single. day. to. every. single. person. Loved it, still do, and still storytelling at my current gig.
I've not lost a child and I don't "intend" to, so for me there's the vast investment in bringing them in, raising them up, and to lose both the past and future at the "wrong time"...astronomically heartbreaking. Never used to cry during movies when a child is lost, now I do every time.
Great example, thanks. There must be realistic limits to scaling such models? Administrative, land to crop to member ratios, etc.? Exploitation/arbitrage must find its way in at some point where it becomes an economy... (Not trying to argue definitions, just thinking about practical governance to extend the model to practical human scales.)
Just a side note: I hoped AirPlay was stable after so many years, but everyone may already know that AirPlay 2 is a change that at least in my use case, made all my old Macs running older macOS and AirPlay 1 incompatible with newer third party hardware and hardware that updated firmware to AirPlay 2. Yes, I'm talking about iTunes! At least all my Airport Expresses still work fine! lol
Thank you. Why I read HN!
One might go so far as to say in the real world (IRL), only a handful of people look good "naturally."
Try looking at everyone around you in public-EVERYONE. The beautiful people in the media sense are an incredibly small minority. I would argue even in places like L.A., sure lots of glam, but take the population as a whole and wow, such a small percentage. I'm speaking as a former pro photog, FWIW. I look at everyone.
I'm having fun sounding this one out for myself! I like how it audibly bounces along via -ung -en -er -ei(eye) -ung and -al. Makes me wanna say, "Now That's Fahrvergnügen!" Or rather, Sprechenvergnügen?
