I was downloading it "just to see," but your comment is roughly a carbon copy of my own IDE/editor usage history, so 1) ooo spooky deja vu and 2) here's hoping I feel the same way you do.
Re:Sailing from Berkeley to Hawaii in a 19ft Sailboat on Wednesday April 02, 2025 @03:19PM (#43560455)
A while back I stumbled upon a youtube channel[1] dedicated to just solo sailing trips. I'm not sure how much is him/his video composition vs. just the subject matter of filming one's seemingly minuscule progress across the vast reaches of ocean, but I became entranced by just the calm plodding-ness of his days. Did a great job of breaking down trips and prep in some of his videos.

Can't speak to his latest stuff, so YMMV, but for a while it worked for me as incredible background. I imagine there's more and more content like this on YT, what with more powerful technology becoming more ubiquitous.

from itchio to 200K+ on steam. Fantastic work. I have loved every minute of playing, and am astounded by the amount of work you've put into the game. Wild to see it a year+ ago vs today. But also still rage inducing when a drop misses every one of my triggers (gg). <3

Re:Why we're helping more wikis move away from Fandom on Thursday October 10, 2024 @10:20AM (#41799114)
It's hard running and managing wikis, and anyone/org/group that does so outside of the auspices of fandom or similar trash-aggregation hosts should be celebrated. Love this for weirdgloop. On a related note, shoutout to liquipedia[1], which has been a great experience for so long (a number of years I refuse to recognize as it would prove I'm old), and I have always feared the possibility of it moving to or becoming a fandom.

Inevitable settlement with no real change in the market dynamics, or am I too down on the U.S. Justice system?

I think their point was that openAI (the nonpro) had the right idea in re: those concerns/concentration.

The velocity of release and entwining with MSFT (by the profit side) might then be reasonably seen as a great concern for the board.

> So -- if appropriate -- he could make changes.

Where are you drawing this conclusion from? Nothing in the text suggests that was his intent - certainly his actions thereafter suggest that he was in fact more concerned with the potential harm to the for-profit company.

Re:Casino-like apps have drained people of millions on Sunday November 12, 2023 @09:42AM (#38240448)
We knew this about casinos. That's why they were relegated to a little hellish desert town.

What happened that we decided apps somehow solved the problems related to gambling?

Re:Judge Dismisses Copyright Claims Against AI Image Generators on Tuesday November 07, 2023 @09:04AM (#38176816)
I don't really see a way they can make their claims "more accurate" unless these models decide to open-source - and why would they ever do that?
Re:Judge Dismisses Copyright Claims Against AI Image Generators on Tuesday November 07, 2023 @08:59AM (#38176762)
That's a pretty low bar though, no? Everyone just updates their T&Cs and laughs their way to the bank with free training data - the real meat of the claims was what was dismissed.
Re:Judge Dismisses Copyright Claims Against AI Image Generators on Tuesday November 07, 2023 @08:58AM (#38176743)
Am I wrong that this seems like a not-good precedent for artists/content creators and the future (much less present) of training data?
Unfortunately this appears to be a drop-in replacement - can't click "buy" on any of the M2 MBPs if you can even get to the model page.
> Ban on chemical fertilizers in Sri Lanka resulted in famine.

Did you read his post?

> You are right that we are so dependent on artificial fertilizers that we cannot simply cease production tomorrow... [e]ssentially no one is saying we should shut down all the factories tomorrow so the argument is a dead end.

> What many people are saying however, is that we went very far down the wrong road, and we are paying the price today. We must figure out how to bring our farming practices back in to balance with ecology.

Sounds about right, especially re: soil ecology and habitat destruction with regards to commercial farming practices. Not sure why you're using Sri Lanka as an example when the Sri Lankan govt. did exactly what he's saying isn't reasonable to expect.

(edit for clarity: I'm ignoring the reality of current self-driving tech/safety for the sake of the philosophical argument) it's cheaper and faster to fire truck drivers and then hire the folks who can run the dispatch/diag/driving software - even if (philosophically) we should want to redirect drivers' skills/experience and retrain them, there's no economic incentive. So, utterly reasonably, unions and labor organizations and the general public push back against wanton job cuts and firings-due-to-obsolescence (though this is not an america-unique problem). I think largely as a species we've yet to crack the code on "hey this wave of tech is going to make X obsolete, maybe we should account for the folks doing X" - certainly one of the weak spots of free market capitalism.

Mazda always refused to go fully touchscreen.

Instead they have somehow rationalized that a control wheel and featureless buttons down in the center console are safer for people to use while the vehicle is active.

It's idiotic.

> Compared to flat burrs, conical burrs also create a more uniform particle size distribution, reducing the potential for clogs and jams

Well this is just...not true. Porlex musta sold them pretty hard on Conicals.

Re:Weight-based motor vehicle tax on Wednesday August 30, 2023 @12:21PM (#37324368)
several states (HI, CA, OR off the top of my head) have trialed mileage-based fees.

The problem becomes convincing anyone there's political credit to be gained by implementing/overhauling those systems. I suspect it will take as-long-as-it-possibly-can for those and bureaucratic reasons (contracts/pilots/implementation of those systems).

Devs, don't force people to suffer through your "pretty" backgrounds.

Re:Why Tailwind CSS Won on Wednesday August 16, 2023 @11:08AM (#37148255)
"should" is often the enemy of "speed" even when it's the _correct_ way to build a system. I think most of us here have experienced that at businesses of varying sizes.
Re:Google is already pushing WEI (web DRM) into Chromium on Wednesday July 26, 2023 @08:35AM (#36876603)
Oh you sweet sweet summer child.
Unregulated free market capitalism.

Profits over people.

This isn't new, and until there are paradigm shifts in the market (lol), government, or greater society which emphasize something _other than profits_, this will continue to be the norm.

Thank you - was really trying to understand why OC was being sniped at with a Grand Theft Auto reference (much less what the ref was supposed to imply...)
There is also a (related, I assume) PR to remove the search syntax page from being published entirely[1]. It's dated December, so it may be fair to assume this has all just been documentation-publishing that hasn't been done yet, as others have posited. That says nothing of the rationale/efficacy of such filtering/syntaxing, though.

Isn't this just a steam controller + the steam Link? I'm not clear on what you mean by "without the pc inside"
