If so, it will end up just like 3d printed houses - not worth optimizing.
Re:Anthropic S-1 on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @12:06AM (#50269245)
Mars is a distraction and a fantasy. Elon has mostly shut up about it after having missed all his dates and realizing nobody cares.
Re:AI promised less work. I've never worked more on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @12:05AM (#50269238)
You're being paranoid.
Re:AI promised less work. I've never worked more on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @10:15AM (#50259733)
It’s a common phrasing in English and has nothing to do with any ideology. Booster replaced “cheerleader” for this purpose some time in the mid 2000s.

See also “cryptocurrency booster” for another example.

What fraction of coding opex do they need to capture to justify this, whether they got it right or not?
Re:Anthropic S-1 on Monday October 26, 2026 @06:18PM (#50251905)
AI aura.

BRCM and Marvell are both the actual designers of many of the “we designed our own ai chip” chips that so many companies have been announcing.

Broadcom is also a major supplier of the networking chips that the hyperscalers use. Clusters are moving away from infiniband and nobody is particularly impressed by Spectrum.

Rocketry revenue is so small that it can’t sustain even a tiny fraction of their valuation which is entirely ridiculous.
Re:No Need for Retirement When Utopia Is Around the Corner on Friday October 23, 2026 @11:38AM (#50210814)
I dread it but it is going to be amazing watching blue collar men and software lordlings trade places.

All the contempt and superiority that characterized the last thirty years going the other direction is going to be very interesting.

The “just learn to weld” era.

I am being completely honest here - what is the reason that the government id thing is a problem here? And why is attesting the private key (evidence that you have it) an issue?

I get the rest but I can’t get my head around people who find these two things upsetting.

72B of the 80B was paper losses due to stock exercises and not related to cash flow.
Re:Tesla Roadster on Friday October 16, 2026 @04:58PM (#50124596)
Elon _always_ lies and exaggerates during these things. He seemingly can't stop himself.
Re:Suicide rates highest ever among middle-aged men on Thursday October 15, 2026 @03:27PM (#50108953)
This honestly sounds like a nice voyage. Thanks for sharing.

My personal fantasy is going and spending a week deep in Canyonlands. Few people, good isolation, dark nights.

Re:Suicide rates highest ever among middle-aged men on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @11:42PM (#50098862)
A strong aspect I see of this in friends is this: some variation of "it is too late to start over."

Tell us about the train trip.

They are very closely related and share a number of fungal pathogens. In addition as grown they are almost a small set of monocultures.
People are not growing their own anything at all scale necessary to be responsible for the decline.
About ten years ago I was at a party and an Australian coworker and I were talking. I casually mentioned the HPV vaccine since his daughter was entering her teens. He declared, “I’m not going to turn my daughter into a whore.”

You may be right that the demographics are shifting but not necessarily in a good way.

Re:It's Time to Investigate the AI Labs on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @01:51AM (#49888781)
You don’t need to attack humans directly. Simply making and distributing a virus or fungus that successfully damages the grasses that we use for the bulk of our calories would do the job.
Re:How much oil-market buffer is left? on Tuesday September 15, 2026 @05:55PM (#49719404)
PHEV are more convenient and generally better. A Toyota Rav4 PHEV, Prius or may others, are shockingly fuel efficient relagtive to older car stock. I had not replaced a car for 16 years and found getting actual 52-54mpg out of a much larger and heavier vehicle genuinely shocking.

Most people have a relatively short commute where the modest range of PHEV still allows them to mostly be on electric.

It will take _many_ years for alternatives to come online in the US and most other places. So much of the west is unable to execute on any kind of large project. In addition, in the US, the current administration has an irrational opposition to the main cost-effective alternatives.
Re:Jabber/XMPP: How Do We Gain Traction? on Monday September 14, 2026 @12:07PM (#49699259)
There is literally nothing about enterprise inspecting proxies that requires the client operate without default and always on crypto. That makes no sense at all.

The way businesses handle this is by installing a certificate they manage and deploy to their proxies.

Re:Jabber/XMPP: How Do We Gain Traction? on Monday September 14, 2026 @11:59AM (#49699106)
Most of the critique in the post is about the low quality of Signal's app, which has zero to do with the protocol. And frankly almost every XMPP client was vastly worse in quality terms than Signal is and OTR regularly just produced garbage. It had a chance. Signal is not widespread because the only reason to use it is high privacy consciousness or being in the government and wanting secure chat with automatic deletion for conversations you're not supposed to be having.

It's a little like asking "Carburetors: How do we gain traction?"

XMPP is not a well designed protocol in many ways. There's no particular reason for anyone to care.

Blind culture is really just asian cultural values in aggregate form.
Re:Inception-style curved map for turn-by-turn directions on Saturday August 29, 2026 @02:35AM (#49487504)
Why? There's no benefit to the first person view part of it at all.
Malarone gave me insane almost-kindof-sortof waking dreams of concerning character. I have never had anything like that before or since.
In universe the society of earth and the federation only happened because there was a devestating global thermonuclear war that left the survivors being highly selected for collectivist impulses and then on top of that the eugenics wars where there was another filter (even the common people).
You’re thinking the servants exist primarily to execute tasks. Servants exist primarily to abuse.
For this system. Their fantasy is effectively automated luxury palaces and the poor exist primarily for exploitation (mostly sexual and gladiatorial).

It’s because they are training them as much for engagement as actual problem solving at this point.

These have been made on and off since 1995 at the latest. They never work out even though you'd think they'd be super popular for 3d modelers at least. I first encountered one for SGI workstations.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SpaceOrb_360 as one example.
