You don't think the fullblown fascist takeover of the American government warrants that? Agree to disagree I guess.

Re:mitmproxy adds --emudhra option on Thursday October 22, 2026 @07:08PM (#50202353)
Seems valid to me. EMudhra meant it to be secret, the secret was reversed due to using insufficiently large numbers, so now the secret is compromised. It's the same as if someone went into hiding, and someone tracked down the hiding spot via flaws in the plan, you'd say the location was compromised.

It was a particularly poor choice of number, but still

Spider-Noir is a series. Minutes viewed is a very good metric for a series because viewers frequently drop off part of the way in. Combine that with viewership, and you can see whether people are giving up after one episode, many episodes, or finishing the whole thing.

Personally I think it was not being the frontrunner of video call tech in 2020
It's equally likely that those business owners are simply burying their heads in the sand about it.

A local restaurant here caught a LOT of flack about it when they did a reopening under new ownership with AI menus, and had to revise their menu very quickly to avoid losing too much potential business.

I also see event organizers complaining about nobody showing up to their event, refusing to acknowledge that maybe it's because the flyer they had Gemini make was unworthy of any note in a sea of identical flyers with the same tired aesthetic.

Paywalled.

However, as a related anecdote, a restaurant recently moved and retooled themselves in my city, and they initially used a very clearly AI generated menu. It generated a very clear backlash, to the point the owner had to make social media posts about how the real menu was still being worked on. A week later, lo and behold, they had a menu with their actual food on it. The rest of the design is still the same generic ai garbage, but at least they listened to their audience and got real photos of their food on there.

Re:Ask HN: How to recover Google auth after phone stolen? on Thursday September 17, 2026 @08:02PM (#49748489)
My wife recently had this happen to a work acquaintance. They are a recent immigrant who has only lived in New York since moving here, who was sent out to the Midwest where there is no public transportation and driving is mandatory, and is staying at a hotel. She lost her phone, and thus could not get anywhere or communicate with anyone, and couldn't pay for anything due to her phone being where all her money is stored (no physical credit cards or anything). Luckily, my wife was able to get her around and help her out until they eventually discovered it was in a lost and found. If she had been alone, I don't know what she would have done.

Imagine being on vacation and you lose your phone, or it breaks. You offloaded your payments to digital and have no cards or cash, you can't get in your hotel room because you used a digital key like hotels all want you to, maybe you brought a car but oops it's a Tesla and you're depending on your phone as the key because it's less stuff to carry!

Or worse, demanding you "use more ai" in your work because clients have been questioning whether the company is "all in on ai"

That would be stealing credentials, they were arguing they might have obtained them legitimately.
> same amount of money for a worse product.

I like physical media, but this is not objectively true. Digital purchases come with benefits consumers want like quicker access, less materials waste, and (in general) more longevity since a digital product cannot rot or be damaged. Obviously that last one is lessened because the seller is able to yank your "license" at any time, but it generally holds that you're in less danger of a little brother snapping a disc in half or a roommate borrowing and losing it.

> When all it really needs is civic responsibility and an understanding that the government derives its power from the people, and thus the people always get the government they deserve.

Look I encourage people to vote and participate in government and politics as much as possible, but it's extremely clear at this point that this is more and more untrue every day. The government derives it's power from billionaires now, and thus the people always get the government billionaires want. It may not be exactly the route they want, but it's the same end results.

Look no further for proof than the endless slew of city and county governments that capitulate to big tech and sign sweeping data center contracts without even notifying their constituents, intentionally ignoring the feedback they get, or simply silencing the dissenters when they speak at meetings. Even local government has been sold to the highest bidder.

Not OP, but with DNS ad blocking like pi-hole you need to be aware that any "normies" living with you will hate it. DNS blockers silently break any kind of "sponsored links" in search results and a lot of the links in email marketing, and most people use those frequently. They don't take kindly to being told they're doing it wrong and have to change their browsing habits for benefits they don't perceive.

> Whereas seemingly half of all people claim they have aphantasia

Citation needed.

People who experience something will be louder when that condition is brought up or relevant. That's a known phenomenon, it's why conservatives think trans people are everywhere.

Most statistics I've seen are more like 2-4% of the population, but it's not a very good measure because the vast majority of people do not know aphantasia is a thing. Hell, it's not even in my phones dictionary.

That might seem like a nitpick, but most of your comment seems to rely on aphantasia being widespread.

Re:Anti-AI fonts are useless and harmful on Saturday August 22, 2026 @04:10PM (#49403362)
You can just as easily say that people using these fonts are the ones holding accessibility users hostage, since they are willingly choosing to use exclusionary tools.

If an ISP blocks an entire apartment blocks internet in response to one users activity, it's pretty clear the ISP is holding the neighbors connectivity hostage because they made the move. It's the same thing, except the little guy role happens to be flipped.

Re:Kobo can run apps now on Saturday August 22, 2026 @12:13PM (#49401145)
That's their point though. The hacker ethos doesn't ask "should I do this" it asks "can I do this", and that's kind of beautiful when it's not scaled up to a corporate level.

The goal doesn't have to be practicality.

Out of curiosity is that just "modern" reddit or old reddit too? (However long old reddit sticks around, anyway, it's clearly not long for this world after they began requiring a login to use it so if the login page requires JS then it's kind of moot)
Re:You have been mislead about lightbulbs on Friday July 31, 2026 @07:17PM (#49129579)
Brightness and color temperature are orthogonal. The dimmer switch only controls brightness.
Re:You have been mislead about lightbulbs on Friday July 31, 2026 @07:09PM (#49129525)
I would say most LED bulbs. You need ones specifically rated for enclosures, which are way less common, and most people have the wrong idea of what counts as enclosed (the glass hood around your kitchen chandelier bulbs is an enclosure, as are ceiling cans)
Re:DEF CON bans Meta-style 'pervert glasses' on Tuesday July 28, 2026 @06:24PM (#49090804)
It's weird to me that you find that weird. People in general don't like worrying that every little conversation is being recorded.
I hate to be the guy arguing semantics, but is that the median definition? Everyone I know defines vibe coding as ignoring the actual output code completely and evaluating the result by how it behaves under test. Non-coders vibe code by default, because they don't understand how to read the code in the first place. Developers vibe code when they just trust the LLM to have been right about the behavior they don't explicitly test for. Vibe coding is the act of ignoring most possible friction, for better or worse.
I'd argue the conclusion is wrong. The premise, that places like CA are currently such tinderboxes as a direct result of preventing natural burning and continuing to develop in areas that need to burn to stay healthy, is extremely well supported.
> In the end neighbors and community at large ended up being against the grocers union due to a handful of cringe, edgelord members in utilikits over-stepping with their "uh ackshully" shit.

This reflects poorly on the neighbors more than the union members, IMO.

Re:Have You Restarted Your Computer This Week? on Wednesday July 01, 2026 @03:06PM (#48751692)
It's not unusual to have sleep state issues on Linux, which is what it runs (an Arch derivative).

Could be some faulty hardware somewhere, but it's not a concerning enough issue to spend money replacing things for a machine that gets used for personal projects and video games.

Re:Have You Restarted Your Computer This Week? on Tuesday June 30, 2026 @07:23PM (#48740540)
Not OP, but the sleep and hibernate states on my desktop are pretty finicky and can't truly be trusted. I'd rather know everything shut down properly than risk it, especially since the thing boots in seconds anyway, and I have to input the encryption password anyway.
Sure, it's a work phone. And that job is with the US government, famously "of and for the people", meaning that citizens are owners of thar workplace. As an owner, I am not okay with this, and I will make my voice heard

To be clear, it's not having a government controlled app, it's the fact that this app exists to perpetuate the cult of Donald Trump. It's a tool for spreading fascism.

Then what's the right to it doing in the constitution?

Perfect is the enemy of good.

> Migrating Spring Boot apps from 3.x t 4.x is now easy given all the tooling available.

Is this true now? I used Claude-backed Cline in March to make that migration, and it got SO much wrong, mainly due to the lack of solid documentation and example code for it, I imagine. Probably the project where I've had to fix the most AI mistakes so far (it was incapable of fixing the mistakes itself, it just kept getting it wrong in different ways).

The claim was that the AI use is rampant in youth right now. I countered that with (real) anecdotal evidence from those who have the best view into the problem. You have not refuted me in any way.

If anything, you're implying a completely independent outcome that AI goes the way of computers and becomes truly ubiquitous DESPITE being unpopular with kids right now. That would be supporting what I suggested.
