Not to mention that now you need an "alignment meeting" with a bunch of people

Awesome! I was planning to do something very similar to this. This is really useful

91 should be prime, ridiculous that it isn't
Re:Happy 20th Birthday, Django on Tuesday July 15, 2025 @05:01AM (#44569291)
Django was the first Python framework that made sense to me and that I enjoyed working with. Also got me my first Python job after years of Java development.

I have moved on to other things since, but I miss it's simplicity and the general "it just works" aspect of the framework.

Re:ICE test train reaches speeds of up to 405.0 km/h on Monday June 30, 2025 @04:55AM (#44421004)
Would be great if they were on time and closures of important routes didn't took 9 months
Re:GitHub Is Down on Thursday January 30, 2025 @09:48AM (#42878234)
The incidents history page is really damning. I didn't realize it gotten so bad

Same thing happened to me. Work was the first place where I felt I actually belonged and knew my own worth. It can be very intoxicating.

Same, just a couple of small beers and a glass of champagne.

I feel much better today than a year ago, where I was hangover most of the day

What is wrong wit
> Got a near full-tuition scholarship from a T200 public university to study undergrad in the US

I think this alone is an incredible opportunity that not many people get in their lives. IMO, you have the rest of your life to focus on your career. And is much better to spend these couple of recession/stagnation years in uni instead of in the professional world.

> Unfortunately even if you feel like your resume is super strong, getting a job now requires to literally excel in every single step of the interview and having the luck of having the team feeling you as a perfect fit for the team. Even a single meh would mean instant rejection

I'm part of the interview process for a role we're trying to fill, and it's 100% like you describe it. I lost count of how many people we interviewed already (and mind you, we're not looking for anything out of the ordinary).

I'm guessing they don't need a crew for these ghost flights if there are no passengers.
I would be fine with it if there was at least a salary range included in the message. But 90% of the time there isn't one
Re:Why engineers should focus on writing on Monday July 10, 2023 @03:06AM (#36662994)
I have seen this more and more as well. In my experience, it tends to be developers who are aiming to switch to project management at some point in their careers.
I don't know why people are so often surprised about the number of employees in a company. My company has half the number of employees, we're not remotely as relevant as SO.

> I work on the principle that the best people usually come in via your network and are highly employable. So, that puts the pressure on to act quickly and decisively when you come across a good reference.

I completely agree. However, at my current job, referring someone for an open position just means throwing their CV in the mix along with everyone else's. There is no way to bypass even a single step in the weeks-long hiring process. And I suspect this is slowly becoming the norm.

Re:Ask HN: Should I quit my job? on Monday January 16, 2023 @09:57AM (#34401260)
You can easily burn out for a number of reasons
Re:Ask HN: Should I quit my job? on Monday January 16, 2023 @09:55AM (#34401233)
Companies hiring you at a lower lever and then making it very difficult to you to level up due to "processes" are a dime a dozen. Start by doing the bare minimum at your current job, including taking long(er) breaks during the days if you happen to work from home.
Re: on Friday January 13, 2023 @12:53PM (#34371287)
10+ years for me. It wasnt like this when I started
Re: on Friday January 13, 2023 @12:07PM (#34370620)
Totally agree. I have some hope that the current high-profile layoffs makes (at least some) non-technical people to leave the industry. I have even started seeing more and more developers that have 0 interest in programming and are in it for the money, and it shows.
Re: on Friday January 13, 2023 @11:41AM (#34370251)
Maybe hitting some hiring target?
Re:Ask HN: Are you thinking about Quitting? on Friday January 13, 2023 @01:52AM (#34364717)
I would kill for a product owner that actually does their job, so I know what the hell am I supposed to be building.

Obligatory XKCD: https://xkcd.com/723/
Yes, but it took leaving my then-current job, and start doing part-time freelancing (I spent more time gaming than working for a few months). I did that for about a year and a half and then joined a startup, which was actually great. Barely any pressure, and lots of freedom.

It takes a lot of time to recover from burnout, but it's definitely doable.

Yes!
Re:How to fuck up an airport on Sunday July 03, 2022 @01:39PM (#31969439)
It is, but I live in Berlin and it's an absolutely shitty airport.

For all the talk about "no silver bullet", there's a staggering amount of folks who keep falling for it.

> It's not usually about the presented issue. The relationship dynamics are the real truth.

Absolutely. I was on the wrong side of such a dynamic until recently, by the end of it (thankfully I switched teams) it was a straight up bullying situation. And much like an abusive romantic relationship, it escalated slowly in a way that was difficult to notice. My point is, yes, do whatever you can to stay away from these kind of people.

Re:Ask HN: I'm tired of intense code review cycles on Saturday December 18, 2021 @01:24AM (#29602219)
It's a case of the perfect being the enemy of the good.

Is it possible that there's not too much work to do? In my experience, this happens when the reviewer has too much time on their hands. Parkinson's law comes to mind.

Re:Ask HN: How do you accept your place in the world? on Friday December 17, 2021 @05:13AM (#29590184)
You talk about "people", but if you actually count them, how many are they? Hundreds, maybe a couple of thousands at best? The vast majority of us are average, maybe somewhat above-average if we're lucky.

I would say, ask yourself why do yo need to compare yourself with anyone? By your own account you do very interesting work, why is that not enough? Start from there.
