I'm sure having a bunch of rocket engines, fuel, plumbing, etc, on my car will make it great in the twisties. This is such a stupid compromise.
I wonder if the shadows from such a large area would have a climate cooling effect?
If someone has that sort of knowledge; how big a chip would be required? Is it possible?
Re:Anthropic acquires Stainless on Monday May 18, 2026 @05:27PM (#48185909)
I worked with both Alex (stainless) and Jarred (bun) at Stripe, and they were both notable for their high energy and output. I did find it amusing that Anthropic picked both the Xtripes up and wonder how many Xtripes at at Anthropic hiring their ex-coworkers.

Congrats to them both, and I'm not at all surprised! Great acquihires.

I'd love to learn how to build something like this, but unfortunately the code is unreadable.

If author could write a heavily commented version that would be amazing.

As a New Zealander who's had skin cancer, and lives under constant high UV rates because of the lack of an ozone above my country (and Australia, South America, South Africa), I'd really like it if Europeans continued to reduce/stop ozone harming emissions.

How do you actually do the manufacturing? What machines does one need to do something like this?
Re:How to give a senior leader feedback (without getting fired) on Saturday November 23, 2024 @04:02PM (#42223856)
This was one of the most exhausting aspects of working for a US company, especially as an H1B. Simply: just don't say anything, it wasn't worth it.

I'm from cultures where we bluntly call a spade a spade and pride ourselves on disdain for hierarchy. There's far less fear in raising concerns generally to anyone, but it's quite possibly because of the far better employment laws.

Re:Visual Basic 6 IDE recreated in C# on Thursday November 14, 2024 @06:30PM (#42142425)
As a kid I spent summers working in the schools IT department in order to save up to buy VB6 (with a staff discount). This was not cheap back in the day!
NZ is maybe a poor example, as we do not have capital gains taxes on houses (or most things), and do tax foreign investments (via a ~1.5% annual wealth tax, so house flipping is tax-free money)
Kia ora from Tauranga

100%. There are 2 NZ employment markets. Those working for NZ companies in the $100k region, and those working for US firms for the $200+k region.

I've had an annoying time explaining this to past US employers when they present median values for NZ salary fudge factors.

Boom times for anyone in road building and construction, probably. It's been described as a billion dollar weather event on par with the Christchurch earthquake 10+ years ago.
I wonder if they could reverse the flow direction periodically to flush it
Re:Vanuatu has been knocked offline for over a month on Thursday December 08, 2022 @01:17PM (#33911136)
I grew up in Vanuatu having those same experiences; swimming coral reefs, walking to the top of a volcano, exploring the jungles... etc

It is a world away from the suburban kid's lifestyle back in the US (or wherever; i'm from NZ)

Congratulations on taking the bold choice to move!

Re:New Zealand plunges into recessionary spiral on Friday November 04, 2022 @03:29PM (#33472427)
Judging by my inability to get into any store at Westgate last weekend due to the crowds, I think we're still a while off "plunging". /anacdata
Re:I made a site for 100% location independent jobs on Saturday September 03, 2022 @12:42PM (#32703580)
The first job I looked at stated they were hiring "anywhere across the US", so this doesn't look like a very well curated list.
I left the US when Covid struck. No way was I sitting around there during all of this.

I took a 50% pay cut to move back to my home country, while producing the same output (and value)... the company directly benefited from that.

Now, if my company forced me back into an office I'd say no. I'd be on the market only for a remote role, still at a steep discount on US engineers. Why wouldn't a smart company take that offer?

WFH is not going away, but I suspect the FAANG will move away from it and the startups will capture the opportunity.

NZ is very well regarded for freedoms, literally topping the list https://freedomhouse.org/country/new-zealand/freedom-world/2...
The NZ sun is terrible. You feel the sun burning you as soon as you get outside. Burn time can be about 10 minutes on a sunny day, and maybe 20 on a cloudy day in summer.

In NZ we get about 4000 in-situ melanoma diagnosis a year. I was one of them a couple of years ago (at 37).

Wear sunscreen!

Re:Exit interviews are a trap on Monday April 04, 2022 @06:29PM (#30912821)
Ditto. I assumed it was an opportunity to document any legally problematic reasons that drove you to quit so they could get ahead of them, or reinforce their case for firing you.
I guess what I was hinting at was the difficulty in filtering "remote" roles
Remote is such an overloaded term. Is it US/North America only? Is it equal work for equal pay globally?

I was someone who took the opportunity to relocate back to my home country when Covid struck, but had to take a near 50% pay cut to do so, despite doing the same work. I'm surprised this hasn't become more of a hot button issue within the community.

Yes! I've been having to double tap links on iOS Chrome, as you've described. I'm a frontend engineer so this had me puzzled. It's not like there's a zindex issue with something blocking it, as a double tap seems to often work.

DSE was an absolute rip off, but it was pretty much the only game in town.

As a kid it was an amazing place for me to spend an hour on the weekends pottering around all the electronic kitsets and latest computer parts/gadgets.

I would credit DSE with fostering a lot of my love of computers and technology. I am quite sad it no longer exists.

Could we throw enough moon rocks into an orbit which would block some % of sunlight hitting the earth (to cool it)?
Re:Apple TV 4K Gets A12 Bionic on Tuesday April 20, 2021 @04:42PM (#26881342)
Looking at the description on the website, it looks like this is going to be a non-starter for us projector users, sadly, as you have to point your camera at the screen within an inch or so from the surface. Hopefully there's some manual calibration option too.

By the voiceover, I can always tell a German company produced english video. There's a very particular accent.
Isn't this enough of a crime for some prison time? Is there some exception for registered researchers or something?
