Re:Ask HN: What should I do as a loser in meritocracy? on Wednesday June 16, 2021 @09:00AM (#27528017)
How about you do things that actually have merit?

Not by some stupid elite standard, but by your own standard.

Stop comparing yourself to others. Be yourself, everyone else is taken.

Who cares about stupid elite schools and companies? Go live.

Everything must be squeezed.

I think you might have missed the point of what Yacht Rock is. It ain’t Elvis.

Re:Opinion: The secret gag orders must stop on Monday June 14, 2021 @12:08AM (#27499208)
Good luck with that.

Secrecy is a drug that governments become addicted to, and with zero down side for the government, nothing ever gets wound back.

Things will only get ever more secret.

Re:Implementing Private Fields for JavaScript on Sunday June 13, 2021 @08:18AM (#27491916)
I don’t believe in private variables/fields.

They shouldn’t be used or implemented.

A waste of time and effort.

Meh. All your objections are hand wavey and not factual.

Databases actually work fine as a queue but emotionally you don’t like it. That’s fine it’s just not real strong objections.

What you have not said is “it physically does not work”, and that’s because it does work fine.

So use a separate database.

Is contention with the application your only objection? That’s pretty weak.

What’s the real compelling reason not to use a database? You haven’t said.

MySQL and Microsoft SQL server also support SKIP LOCKED.
Re:Robinhood and Didi to Kick Off a Hot IPO Summer on Friday June 11, 2021 @09:28AM (#27473025)
On the day in question, Robinhood posted to say this is what it was doing, and it explicitly stated that it was doing so to protect its customers from volatility. It absolutely said nothing at all about doing it because of regulatory or other requirements.

Robinhood has since deleted that post from its site.

And no matter how you cut the cake, if you put your money into Robinhood then you risk losing it when Robinhood changes the rules.

That’s the message people need to hear.

Re:Robinhood and Didi to Kick Off a Hot IPO Summer on Friday June 11, 2021 @06:16AM (#27471370)
If so, why doesn’t this happen all the time?

In fact, when has it EVER happened before, or since?

If it was normal wouldn’t there regularly be stocks that can’t be bought but can be sold?

Re:Robinhood and Didi to Kick Off a Hot IPO Summer on Friday June 11, 2021 @06:03AM (#27471296)
Robinhood’s own customers got tossed to the dogs because Citadel told the CEO of Robinhood to manipulate the market.

If you have a Robinhood account then you risk Robinhood making decision that lose you money so that the hedge funds make money.

Re:Robinhood and Didi to Kick Off a Hot IPO Summer on Friday June 11, 2021 @05:39AM (#27471112)
Just a reminder that robinhood prevented people buying certain stocks while allowing them to sell, causing many people to lose money, but supporting the short selling hedge funds, whilst claiming to be “investment for the people”.

Possibly they are rushing to IPO before facing court.

I would neither buy shares IN Robinhood nor would I buy shares using a Robinhood account.

Errrrr.... did they get the news that crypto already crashed?
