Re:A Growing Problem in Real Estate: Too Many Too Big Houses on Wednesday July 03, 2019 @08:46PM (#20350523)
$1440/yr seems hardly worth the effort for he hassle and cost of moving every year. Compounding rent increase over years makes it substantial.

I suppose you don't have kids though, which may simplify things.

Much simpler would be to raise property taxes to a reasonable level and redistribute that via a citizens' dividend /UBI. That gives you free market efficiency with no rent-seeking non-local owners sucking away the wealth, only reasonable fees for management and liquidity services.
Re:A Growing Problem in Real Estate: Too Many Too Big Houses on Wednesday July 03, 2019 @08:40PM (#20350495)
If you live in your house instead of paying transaction costs to sell, lower property value just means lower property taxes and a more prosocial working class neighbors.
Re:A Growing Problem in Real Estate: Too Many Too Big Houses on Wednesday July 03, 2019 @08:36PM (#20350479)
You are conflating home ownership with house ownership. You can buy a condo and pay someone to maintain it for you, just as your apartment landlord can hire unreliable managers tradesworkers to fail to fix your water heater.

It works if the leader is a birthright aristocrat leader who has no need to justify his position, but still wants to be good.

The ancient wisdom didn't account for the politicking of corporations.

Airbnb doesn't replace cheapo hotels. It replaces expensive hotels. People go to airbnbs because hotels are too expensive for them.
It is more likely that IH knows the rental market price and you don't. 5% growth per year is totally normal in desirable areas . It's lower than real estate appreciation.
If you had surplus housing, Airbnb would not exist because there is no point.
Chinese speculators reduce growth by keeping property vacant. Airbnb doesn't affect growth.

House prices are not growth, and they generate the tax revenue that you say helps get the infrastructure ready.

You are describing young, single people, not long-term renters.
Re:Ask HN: “Contact us for pricing” nonsense on Saturday June 15, 2019 @04:36PM (#20191988)
You left out the #1 reason: so you can suss out their spending power and level of need so you can charge value-based pricing instead of cost-based pricing. Nothing you wrote is relevant to OP's concern about "call for price".

Companies can fund art directly (and many do, such as Google/YouTube), instead of wastefully routing it through government.

Government can provide UBI and healthcare to the whole population instead of picking politically connected artists to make government approved art.

Building a successful business requires taking responsibility for all the boring details. Complaining that it is someone else's fault wastes precious time and hurts morale.
Re:Technically, Earth Does Not Orbit Around the Sun (2014) on Saturday June 15, 2019 @07:52AM (#20189566)
It's not arbitrary. The only two choices that work are the real center of gravity, and the observer's position with the real center of gravity orbiting the observer and everything else orbiting the real center of gravity. If Tycho chose Jupiter as the center of the orbits, the planetary orbits would have the same problem of epicycles as the older models.

Floating point error is far far smaller than measurement error and missing data.

Do you have hundreds of different memorized sets along this route now?
And they were mostly all plagiarized from other sources.

I find that the community college grada are better professionals than the kids who jumped into uni because they didn't know anything and grasped at straws. It's an expensive but revealing mistake that shows which young adults have good judgement and self awareness.

Baby boomers didn't cut school funding. Gen X did.
Re:Student Loan Debt Crisis Is Bankrupting Millennials on Friday June 14, 2019 @01:45PM (#20184983)
Why is it better for taxpayers to pay off their loans now instead of waiting to see if they retire penniless?
Re:Student Loan Debt Crisis Is Bankrupting Millennials on Friday June 14, 2019 @01:42PM (#20184951)
What college did you go to? Public or private? In state or out? Community or state? What was your major field of study in college?

Why would you be homeless if your parents have a home with a room for you?

How old are you? The student debt crisis is 20 years old already.

If it's your parents' fault, take their money to pay back the loan. What's your parents' excuse for taking out large bad loans?

Re:Student Loan Debt Crisis Is Bankrupting Millennials on Friday June 14, 2019 @01:40PM (#20184929)
Usually, the people owed the debt is not the people who the loan was spent on. You aren't playing dirty back at them, you are just making someone else the victim of the monetary loss.
Re:An Infinitely Large Napkin on Friday June 14, 2019 @01:21AM (#20180750)
How is that possible since the force on a test particle on the surface of the napkin is 0?
Re:How to parent more predictably (2018) on Thursday June 13, 2019 @05:41PM (#20178830)
Better to use accurate language like "5 more moments" or "time to wrap up" or "one last ride", to avoid messing up your child's budding sense of chronology and numeracy.
Re:How to parent more predictably (2018) on Thursday June 13, 2019 @05:39PM (#20178817)
Your first paragraph contradicts your second paragraph.

It also works to practice with coworkers, friends, and really anything with a modicum of intelligence and a limbic system.

What is a "naughty step"?
Re:How to parent more predictably (2018) on Thursday June 13, 2019 @05:32PM (#20178766)
As used in this thread starter, "time out" means being sent away as punishment. Going to "cool off", or to use physical separation to end/prevent conflicts, is a not a punishment "time out".

A good test is whether going away is for the goer's immediate benefit. It should be.

If you don't want to see Google content when you visit a web page, maybe you should visit a non-Google web page?
What's wrong with AMP websites? AMP is a fast subset of HTML. That's different from using Google's AMP cache.
