Re:Ask HN: How are you teaching your children programming? on Wednesday September 06, 2017 @02:53PM (#15186163)
We're teaching our kids programming by having them on FIRST teams. The youngest is on his second year FIRST LEGO League team, and the oldest is on a FIRST Tech Challenge team. http://ev3lessons.com is a great resource for introducing robot concepts using the LEGO Mindstorms EV3, which uses a block programming interface derived from LabView.

Given that these are claims of anaphylaxis, you would certainly be heading to the doctor no matter what. There would have to be a lot of newly insured people that were previously going to the emergency room and paying out of pocket if it were due to the ACA.

Upvoted because FTC is awesome and we need to encourage more people to volunteer. (FLL coach and FTC judge here, at some point those will swap)
Surely the real reason for this is that the judiciary doesn't want to give anyone a reason to write a new version of 'Les Miserables'
To answer the supposition at the end of the article, they're already working on driverless racecars. http://selfracingcars.com/
Re:Educational Mithridatism on Wednesday September 23, 2015 @02:29PM (#10266994)
I read this as Mithrandirism and was expecting a balrog or something.
Having spent some time optimizing signal processing applications for Sandy Bridge and Haswell targets, the various flavors of SSE are largely additions to the previous generations, and AVX is adding wider (more elements to the vectors) versions of the instructions.

I haven't kept up totally with the AVX2 / 512 additions, but from what I've read, the 512 version is only on certain enterprise versions of the newest generation of Intel chips.

If you're looking for applications to use your new skills, GNURadio, ImageMagick, and FFMpeg might have areas to dive into and experiment.

No idea about the YC-ability, but your round trip suggestions don't return you to the same airport, which seems... non-optimal
Re:The performance and physics of the fish kick on Friday June 26, 2015 @11:55AM (#9785462)
I have to try this next time I'm in the pool. I already kick ass with butterfly, so I should be able to test this theory pretty well.
Re:The STEM Crisis Is a Myth on Wednesday May 27, 2015 @11:48AM (#9612188)
The 'no regular science class' is actually a indicator of adherence to Common Core. Everything is either Math instruction or English Language Arts (ELA). Social Studies and Science are generally taught as units of ELA and not subjects of their own until Middle School.

That said, STEM fields have historically sucked at diversity and outreach to disadvantaged populations. It's hard to do science with no budget for supplies. It's getting better(tm) with programs like FIRST.
