Re:American views of higher ed decline, once again on Friday October 30, 2026 @10:26AM (#50304404)
I think because in the last years that the American college system has been perceived as a business and for-profit system, and that buying into that system has been associated with long term debt, the economical equation is what stands in the forefront of many people's minds when they consider pursuing a college career, and it might not make sense anymore from that perspective. If you have an education system that is perceived as a purely economical option, education is not anymore perceived as a means in itself. What kind of influence this will have on the culture of learning will probably become visible in the future - and is already apparent in certain areas of life.

From their own statement:

> Because of the decentralized nature of our work, this has to be spelled out quite clearly: Preparing for impending apocalyptic events should mean collective action and structural reform, not individualism and isolation.

Imagine if the atom bomb was created by private companies about to make their IPO.

Are you able to fit an open MacBook Pro with nano texture finish into your pocket? If yes, you might have different problems (or benefits).
I think the reason they offer these options in the first place is the discontinuation of the MacPro and their remaining need to offer high end solutions.
I would seek advice from people who have a theory of why or why not they were successful. A lot of those results were happening in very specific contexts and usually should not be regarded as a blueprint, but as inspiration to whatever I do.
Re:The AI bubble is popping; we just don't know it yet on Monday August 03, 2026 @08:48AM (#49155077)
I want to see the number of gamers that tear the chips from the dead hands of hyperscalers to make up for the implosion of that market. If I had to guess, half of humanity does not have interest in dedicated gaming chips. Memory, that's another story.
I secretly hope that Infantino goes ahead with it anyway. UEFA and others will form something new. Something that replaces the incredibly broken and corrupted FIFA with a de-facto and de-jure non-profit governing body.

Nono, actually there are no thoughts. Every utterance is just a copy of a previous utterance plus a slight random mutation. (somewhat /s)

I tried to make ChatGPT generate a counterpoint for that but it turns out you're right.

Well, as it stands HN is like just another good subreddit.
Apparently the amount of radiation is safe:

In short: "According to experts the radiation is trivial."

Yes, Pfannkuchen is the name used in Berlin.

I guess it's alway a question of what audience you speak to. OPs explanation could probably be summarized in 2 sentences when aimed at chemists.
Obligatory comment that the Z3 was the world's first digital computer. Not sure what the "real" refers to in the headline, but it turns out that the Z3 was indeed Turing complete.

You’re on a slippery slope and don’t consider that this is an exceptional situation. The danger of losing civil liberties comes when the exception becomes the rule.

AFAIK, no amendments have been violated since YouTube is a private entity. They can editorialize what they, how they want. It’s is their liberty to make a choice here, the same as your liberty to not support that choice.

Take a guess.

You imply that traditional dashboards are too complicated. However, Tesla is merely hiding that complexity behind one or a few screens an a few buttons. I like the approach to minimalism, but in my opinion there has to be a balance between pragmatism and beauty. The learning curve and ease of access is just lower in German (or traditional) dashboards in general. I am not sure if Tesla found that particular balance. I hear a lot of hate towards the giant screen and no love, but that is just anecdotal. I assume Tesla went so radical in the Model 3 to save costs, rather than to stay minimalistic.

I wonder, does that mean loss of precision or complete failure?
I wonder how gay men handle this situation. Are situations that are symmetrical to the heterosexual version causing similar issues?

What does Apple stand for and why does it clash with a speculative future outlined here?
iOS does that too – after a while of carrying it around.
You're exactly describing the reason why there is checks and balances. "People in power" is supposed to be a heterogenous group with different interests and formal functions. Your post suggests that it doesn't work properly in your country anymore. I wonder where exactly one could pinpoint the weak spots and systemic issues.

Miele, Neff, Liebherr, this is my go to when I plan to keep stuff for a decade or more. There's even a few more smaller high end brands from Germany. I bought a used Miele Toploader from the 90s. Miele says new ones will be good for about 20 years. So I probably have some more years with that one. Plus timeless, simple design, exceptional quality and very good cleaning performance. Note that I live in Germany. When I looked at Miele vacuum prices in a Macy's in California I had to choke a little.

Nah, I ain't that fast. There's a completely different story behind that but there's also a time and place for everything ;-)
