News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

You usually want people who are A) do actually buy something and B) attend in actual social interactions (i.e. talking to each other).

Rent an office or go to one of those shared office spaces, they do offer coffee too.

A stochastic parrot.
This seems to be highly focused on global financial news, which are unsignificant to most people on this planet. It would be nice to be able to include or exclude certain news-categories to actually produce a list that has some significance to the reader.
Re:I just learned about HTML redirects on Sunday April 23, 2023 @07:53AM (#35675455)
Therefore the method called "progressive enhancement" might be an option to start with an HTML-only variant and load JS only if available and required for the current page.
But who actually does that? We need billions of people doing that every day to have an effect.
Only tru for those european nations, who hadn't that in their national laws already.
No turning required. A bureaucrats dream was always everybody else's nightmare.

Still, it is disturbing to watch all of Orwell's ideas getting implemented in real life

Because the European Commission is not a democratic institutionen! Those bureaucrats are mostly announced, not elected. And each European nation is only sending those politicians into the Commission, that are unwanted in national politics.

In other words: The European Commission is the autocratic reservoir for conservative politicians that were to extremistic for national audiences.

Is this real? This sounds like a weird trip back into medieval times. Who is the head of that modern Inquisition?
Re:CoffeeScript for TypeScript on Tuesday February 28, 2023 @04:45AM (#34967501)
Is this an April fools joke? You compile Coffeescript to Typescript to JavaScript to bytecode.

What problem ist actually solved by being able to compile pseudo-languages like Coffeescript or Typescript into each other?

The land of thee free - where you get arrested if your kids buy some sweets on their own.
Do you have sources for that comparison of Opioides with MDMA?

I also couldn't find much studies on MDMA itself, as most such studies refer to some sort of pills, which are usually mixed with other drugs (e.g. Speed).

Re:Ask HN: What's the best lecture series you've ever seen? on Tuesday January 31, 2023 @05:08AM (#34593367)
Vera F. Birkenbihl – all her lectures!

(She also held lectures in the US in the 70s, but I couldn't find any recordings in English.)

The main difference between Europe and the US on this point is health insurance (or the lack of in the US). Those technologies are available worldwide - it heavily depends on whether you can afford it or not.

While Sandpack has a documentation, this site only bears a sign-up link. You won't get my email prior to buying your product. And to buy it I would to read much more about the how's and what's upfront.
Re:MIT-0 License on Sunday April 03, 2022 @02:43AM (#30894968)
> a license is preferable to a public domain dedication

Who says that and why? Why should I care about the complicated terms of a license - especially when such a license expresses essentially the same as "public domain"?

Or in other words: is there any real rationale behind the above statement?

Re:MIT-0 License on Sunday April 03, 2022 @02:39AM (#30894954)
Still, in any other sane country on this planet, works in the public domain are to be used however one want's to.

Re:Down the mechanical keyboard rabbit hole on Friday March 18, 2022 @06:53AM (#30720579)
Can someone, who uses one of those tiny keyboards, elaborate how to work at all (let alone effectivly) without the Home/End/Page up/Page down block or arrow keys? How do you mark a word? How do you jump between lines or beginning and end of the line?

(And I don't even want to think about having no F-keys - which would require even weirder key-combinations in many cases.)

Weird bureaucratic question here: Who owns the copyright for such generated pictures? An AI?
Re:PHP Pipes in 156 Bytes on Saturday March 05, 2022 @10:36AM (#30568394)
What is the benefit of this?

Right now I see an example of how to write unreadable and hard-to-debug code

Being a senior PHP dev I would not let pass such code into our master branch, mainly because it is syntactic sugar that does not help with a specific problem and also does not attribute to a clearer and readable code at all.

Remember: In a company, where we rely on the code to earn our living the two factors readbilty and testabilty are the single most important ones. Because if you are off to holiday and your coworkers can't get a grasp of your (seemingly) clever code, than the whole company has a problem.

Hahaha, that just sums up the ridiculous nature of that piece of art. I guess this is an April fools joke gone wrong.
Re:Ask HN: Is Web 3.0 just crypto or something more? on Saturday December 25, 2021 @02:55PM (#29686403)
To me the crypto technologies are only one possible application on the Web 3.0.

There are voices, that Web 3.0 is the same as the DWeb - the distributed web. Like IPFS, which might be indeed a solution against DDOS attacks and censoring. [1]

On the other hand, there are people who think that "The promise of a decentralized and trustless future is forever just that: a promise, and in the future." [2]
