I find myself pushed to develop tools of my own because even market incumbents can't meet my niche use cases for certain things.

In the same vein, I am trying not to feel dismayed as I venture into the SaaS landscape in a bid to decouple myself from employment and you cannot help but feel your product is doomed before it even launches given people can build their own solutions.

You just need to remember, not everyone is as technical as the people here and those individuals still require solutions to problems.

It's tiring hearing people say "oh well I'll just build it instead" yeah but is it maintainable? Does it scale? Do you know how your data is handled and saved?

Why wouldn't everyone be hot on open models? Security implications? First time I have heard someone lightly opposing the idea of fully open models.
Completely forgetting that design in of itself is completely subjective and brutalism within a digital space is conveyed in an entirely different way to that of architecture.

Constantly reminded why I gladly left the design space, can't stand people who think design should be siloed or interpreted this way.

Re:Things That Annoy Me About Cars on Monday September 14, 2026 @06:54PM (#49705369)
This direction of "cool futurism" and turning every HID inside of a car into a giant iPad is only going to continue, I understand the appeal of EVs but physical buttons and less fancy eletrical-based comforts are the reason I will maintain a combustion vehicle until they are outlawed.
Re:OpenShot 4.0: Record, Edit, and Color Like Never Before on Monday August 31, 2026 @09:31AM (#49509577)
Is this effectively a leaner more basic, record, cut, colour version of Resolve?
I'd beg to differ, I think the idea of reaching pastoral life in suburbia comes down to one's personal perception, I live in suburbia and I for the most part from the outside in would have everything the average person would like for a comfortable life but I am actively looking to scale, happiness comes from retaking ones independence and reducing reliance on the services provided in the comfort of suburbia, supermarkets, grid power etc.

Maintenance is a concern yes, but self perpetuating finances = free time and to quote Socrates - It is a shame for a man to grow old without seeing the beauty and strength of which his body is capable.

Re:Stripe said to abandon $50B pursuit of PayPal on Sunday August 30, 2026 @05:23AM (#49497053)
I've always been baffled when friends return from the US talking about how hard it was to simply move dollars from one person to the other without using hard currency, how is this a thing in the modern world?
Always a fan of WebGL projects, this looks like it would have been a massive build! Incredible work!
Compute already is getting hoarded, the sad part is we're no longer at a point where competition is pushing companies to make more compute available because AI companies can just keep hoarding compute with imaginary money.
Re:Decompiling a Nintendo 64 Game in 84 Days on Sunday August 30, 2026 @04:05AM (#49496700)
The decompilation trend is amazing, everything ranging from N64 games to people reverse engineering componentry on original Xboxes and such; with the world becoming increasingly more bleak from a tech POV, reading these sorts of posts brings a little warmth.
Re:Resurrecting 2013 with Qwen3.8 27B on Sunday August 30, 2026 @03:23AM (#49496463)
AI for media preservation is an awesome use case; it's great to see people who still care about these things. I feel the mid 2010s were the golden years of app development on Android, at least with all of the cool games people were releasing.
Re:Was Modern Art a CIA Psy-Op? (2020) on Tuesday August 25, 2026 @03:39AM (#49430316)
More incredible to believe the most powerful clandestine agency in the world wouldn't want to hold sway over artistic movements to their own end.
Re:How Universities Should Prepare Founders on Tuesday August 25, 2026 @03:36AM (#49430293)
Giving me whiplash how close to home this hit. Same boat, thought I'd studied the right thing, didn't conduct enough research, now sitting here with a student debt dreaming up a way to get myself out of the hole through self-employment. That and just having the insatiable desire of free-agency and not working for someone else but the driving force is definitely the debt and unemployment lmfao.
