I'm super happy with it. The perf are great.

2 big drawbacks: the plastic is super fragile and you will need an external microphone (or your coworkers will complain about fan noises)

I agree that integrating a 3rd party solution has multiple hidden cost.

> This is one of the most common and damaging mistakes I see

Interestingly, the most common mistake I see is people neglecting the cost of developing a solution themselves:

1. opportunity cost

2.long term maintenance

3. documentation & training new people

Your eyes will quickly try and accommodate and find focus if they're allowed to stare too long. This could explain the reason he got such different results from the exams. He was trying too hard. Just follow directions.

I don't have a long experience with glasses but I have never received these instructions and my experience is similar to the author.

Re:What Is a Tech Company? on Wednesday September 04, 2019 @10:58AM (#20877751)
IMO you are mixing 2 different things.

1. The business and product

2. The engineering quality

You can have a tech company (business level as described in the article) and produce ugly code (ex: facebook?).

You can sell groceries on the internet and have great code.

Re:How to Build Good Software on Monday August 19, 2019 @06:57AM (#20736693)
Yes, the lack of knowledge is definitively one of the issue.

But starting a "gather requirements - write software - deliver it" lifecycle because you are confident that you have all the knowledge is one as well.

I agree with the main idea: working with hyped technologies is not a solution and you can build most of the things out there with boring technology.

But then ... you have to find, attract and hire good developers. That's already difficult, adding an extra layer of 'boring technology' will make this task even more challenging.

Sounds cool, how much time do you spend every week?
Re:Ask HN: How do you decide what to learn next? on Sunday April 24, 2016 @11:00AM (#11559872)
I've recently started this method:

- create a list of all the tools/products/whatever you use at work

- rate them from 1 to 5 (5 you are an expert on this topic)

- then pick the most important one for your job and try to increase your grade

The grade is totally subjective, but still it helps.

For the "next big thing" I take a look regularly to the thoughtworks radar [1]. That's a nice overview.

Re:Ask HN: Most hacker friendly laptop on the market? on Sunday July 19, 2015 @01:24PM (#9911943)
I would definitively recommend this one as well, the quality is very good.

Some downside with the Ubuntu version:

* the trackpad not deactivated when typing, that's a real pain, have you found a solution?

* the wake up after a suspension will sometimes generate some problems (no wifi etc..)
