Still alive and kicking. You just need to know where to look.
Re:The PS5 Has Been Jailbroken on Monday October 03, 2022 @06:37AM (#33065674)
PS6 will be written in Rust.
Case in point: don't choose a hobby that can be taken away from you on the whims of some dickhead Google exec.
Re:Turns are better than radians on Monday September 26, 2022 @07:50AM (#32981916)
Or just defining the result of division by zero as zero "for safety": https://www.hillelwayne.com/post/divide-by-zero/

It boggles the mind, truly!

Re:Turns are better than radians on Monday September 26, 2022 @07:10AM (#32981597)
>But math never decreed that sine and cosine have to take radian arguments!

Ummm, actually it did. The Taylor-series of sine and cosine is the simplest when they work with radians. Euler's formula (e^ix = cosx + isinx) is the simplest when working with radians.

Of course you can work in other units, but you'll need to insert the appropriate scaling factors all over the place.

"Turns" don't generalize to higher dimensions either. With radians you can calculate arc length on a circle by multiplying with the radius. This extends naturally to higher dimensions: a solid angle measured in steradians lets you calculate surface area on a sphere by multiplying with the radius. How do you do the same with "turns" on a sphere? You can't in any meaningful way.

Re:Nvidia Reveals RTX 6000 with 48GB GDDR6 ECC Memory on Wednesday September 21, 2022 @09:51AM (#32925149)
That's not really ray-tracing. That's just regular GPU rendering with physically-based materials and some ray-tracing effects for extra chrome.

Any non-trivial project would quickly reach RLIMIT_NOFILE as inotify is non-recursive, so you'd need to open a new fd for each monitored file.

This guy is very smart!

The fedora-tipping is strong in this one.
Re:The Portuguese can no longer afford to live in Portugal on Thursday September 01, 2022 @11:58AM (#32678335)
Step 1: nearly bankrupt your country

Step 2: sell out your country to wealthy foreigners to "stimulate the economy"

Step 3: act surprised that you can't afford living in your country, that got sold out to wealthy foreigners

Re:I Love My PinePhone on Friday August 26, 2022 @11:08AM (#32608510)
PinePhone couldn't even create a phone that can make voice calls properly like a Nokia 3310, yet you're envisioning them beating Apple (!) with rolling out some futuristic technologies.
Re:I Love My PinePhone on Friday August 26, 2022 @09:43AM (#32607414)
Lol! You're pretty unhinged.
Re:Life Is Good in America, Even by European Standards on Friday August 26, 2022 @07:20AM (#32605907)
Ok, but it Czechia by and large you have Czech people paying for the welfare of other Czech people. On the other hand in the US, you would have mostly white and asian people paying for the welfare of mostly blacks and latinos. No wonder they don't want such a system. Like it or not, solidarity needs kinship, especially when it's your money on the line.

*SpiceDB Playground

It's an optical MNIST recognizer.
Re:I hope Apple never adopts RCS on Wednesday August 24, 2022 @06:36AM (#32577501)
Wildly wrong.
More like third-party software (Slack, Figma, VSCode, anything web-based) is getting even more bloated as their engineers' machines get upgraded to M1 Pros.
>For those of us whose CS background doesn't go this deep, what about ARM makes it more performant than x86?

It is more performant because the silicon is made by a company that didn't botch their last process node.

Re:I hope Apple never adopts RCS on Tuesday August 23, 2022 @07:27AM (#32563228)
Yep. I don't want mobile carriers to be anything but dumb pipes.
Re:I hope Apple never adopts RCS on Tuesday August 23, 2022 @07:26AM (#32563216)
RCS is inferior to iMessage simply because it doesn't work on tablets and desktop computers. Since RCS is tied to mobile carriers, who don't want to give up control over those juicy messages, the problem will persist forever.
Re:“I survived the TCP transition” (2013) on Monday August 22, 2022 @04:16PM (#32556627)
120 years ago we knew that some things can fly, because we saw birds. We just had to figure out how to do the same with humans.

On the other hand, we have never encountered anything in nature that goes faster than the speed of light. That's a pretty good hint that it's impossible to do so.

Re:Clip control on the Apple GPU on Monday August 22, 2022 @01:11PM (#32554296)
I know. But the second sentence of the article starts with:

"Neverball uses legacy “fixed function” OpenGL."

But also you could simply remap the Z coordinate of gl_Position at the end of the vertex stage, do the clipping in [0,1] range, then map it back to [-1,1] for gl_FragCoord at the start of the fragment stage.

Re:Clip control on the Apple GPU on Monday August 22, 2022 @12:26PM (#32553681)
Couldn't you just pre-multiply the projection matrix to remap the Z range from [-1,1] to [0,1]?
Re:Global Code Time Report on Monday August 22, 2022 @06:51AM (#32549719)
That's way too much. No wonder there's so much bad code out there.
Re:Running Rust on Logic Gates on Thursday August 18, 2022 @06:21AM (#32507517)
More like: running machine code compiled from Rust on an emulated ARM-like CPU.
- Switch to internal air circulation if I'm stuck behind a diesel car

- Adjust temperature

- Turn off automatic high beams if it misbehaves and starts blinding oncoming traffic

- Switch suspension to comfort mode if bumpy road is ahead

- Turn on/off fog lights

My 2010 Opel/Vauxhall Astra has tons of buttons/knobs, and I love it. I hope the next time I'll have to buy a car (in 3 years? 5 years?), the touchscreen fad will be over.
Adtech will be devastated.
Cope :-)
I'm using it to make Rust programmers seethe.
