Re:Keep your phone number private with Signal usernames on Tuesday February 20, 2024 @08:18PM (#39449117)
Do you still need to give your phone number to Signal to signup? Fucking ridiculous that you have to when it's not really needed.
Re:What Is an Uncensored Browser? on Tuesday February 20, 2024 @08:15PM (#39449104)
Nice. Too bad we can't also get an uncensored web (including LLMs). Censorship is the enemy of the people and as you might know, it is very common on https://news.ycombinator.com/.
Re:AI your home on street view on Tuesday February 20, 2024 @12:07PM (#39443786)
lol... only dang is allowed to be mildly "mean"?
Re:Ask HN: Does a site with .ai affect your perception? on Tuesday February 20, 2024 @12:07PM (#39443783)
If you trust Anguilla as your TLD provider, I would say it's a turn off
Re:AI your home on street view on Tuesday February 20, 2024 @06:29AM (#39440058)
Because you don't understand what I say or because my comment is short doesn't mean it is lacking substance... AI might even do a better moderating job.

The best thing about blurring your house on Google Street view is that according to Google, it can never be undone (they probably will change that rule eventually though)... I sold a house and the new owner can't un-blur their house, lol... its like the opposite of what Google stand for... must have been a Good employee somewhere along the way.

https://support.google.com/maps/thread/154664939/how-do-i-bl...

Could you please let the down-votes moderate? I know you like to shadow-ban though....

edit: (I asked Google to blur that house and then sold it... not sure why it is such a mystery feature from people on this site)

note: I wasn't able to respond to the child comment because HN blocked me, hence the edit

Re:AI your home on street view on Tuesday February 20, 2024 @05:51AM (#39439790)
my house is blurred on street view, good luck...
Re:OTP at a High Level (2019) on Tuesday February 20, 2024 @05:34AM (#39439709)
of course it has to, because no one knows about it... too bad they didnt use it in the title, because even with HN's highly limited title length, I think it would have fit
Re:OpenAI interested in getting into the chip game on Tuesday February 20, 2024 @05:32AM (#39439695)
can't HN automate the process of posting archive links for the most popular paywalls?
Re:Ask HN: How to Be Politely Curious? on Tuesday February 20, 2024 @04:59AM (#39439514)
true, I probably would not have included the word "just".. but I would still would have gave that person the benefit of the doubt
that's about 0.0539% of 1 trillion. Apple is worth about 3 trillions. So about 0.02%... I wish I could pay 0.02% of my worth to make any issue go away.

Seems like a REALLY small fine for an anti-trust issue.

Re:DiskClick: Ever wanted to hear Old Hard drive sounds on Tuesday February 20, 2024 @03:03AM (#39438994)

Re:Ask HN: How to Be Politely Curious? on Tuesday February 20, 2024 @02:17AM (#39438778)
I don't think you are a fool because I ask such a question... I am honestly asking.
Bank of America sucks, but at least their bill payment system is much better than Capital One's
Re:DiskClick: Ever wanted to hear Old Hard drive sounds on Tuesday February 20, 2024 @02:10AM (#39438740)
I wish I could "hear" my SSD... to be able to notice unusual activity

Re:Ask HN: How to Be Politely Curious? on Monday February 19, 2024 @10:47PM (#39437844)
> "Why don't you just X?"

you are being too "polite" ... I think it can be a fair question.

Re:E2EE on the web: is the web that bad? on Monday February 19, 2024 @09:43PM (#39437454)
browsers do add one more layer of trust when thinking about the OS, but any mobile app also does?
Re:Tiny, tamper-proof ID tag can authenticate almost anything on Monday February 19, 2024 @08:37PM (#39437037)
hate those "foam" soles (not sure if that is considered plastic)... it's getting hard to find rubber soles
Re:OTP at a High Level (2019) on Monday February 19, 2024 @08:30PM (#39436989)
probably not.

here is an answer from mistral-next:

> "OTP" can stand for different things depending on the context. However, in the context of transportation, it commonly stands for "One-Time Password". In the context of fanfiction, it can stand for "One True Pairing". In the context of Atlanta, Georgia, OTP stands for "Outside the Perimeter", referring to the areas outside of the Interstate 285 loop that encircles the city. Please provide more context if you meant a different usage.

Erlang OTP makes no sense... just like X, or Alphabet as company names

Can't they use the money from their money laundering business?
Re:E2EE on the web: is the web that bad? on Monday February 19, 2024 @06:57PM (#39436338)
E2EE can be done anywhere, but of course some entities like Google or Apple might try to spy locally.

I would not ride a bicycle in USA rural areas... way too dangerous.
Re:The Feds Just Bet Even Bigger on American-Made Heat Pumps on Monday February 19, 2024 @04:41PM (#39435153)
The whole economy is rigged in so many ways... "keep the rich rich... make the middle class poorer" is the motto... or maybe it's just "make the rich richer and bomb anyone who disagrees"
