Google sat on transformers, LaMDA for years before OpenAI. The engineers and researchers did their job. This was a case of complete strategic, i.e., leadership failure because they were more worried about getting sued.

If anything this shows you can have a good work life balance culture and deliver groundbreaking results but get it all fcked up by sht leaders.

I feel like self driving cars is one area where Google's slow-and-steady culture just works better than the move-fast-and-break things culture, since the things that would break in this case are literal human bodies.
Boycott Nintendo. Make them lose more money from this decision than they could ever hope to gain.
I think "survived" is the key word here. I don't think anybody claims it's the bare minimum and there are better solutions out there.

Last time this happened it was either Walmart or Oracle
I knew the junk wasn't Chinese because this was only reported in space.com and not across all the mainstream media.

Simpsons did this already.

Must feel good to be able to cite that you weren't just correct, but hypercorrect.
They must really hate that ChatGPT spells color without a u.

"It's not about money. It's about a whole shit load of money."
No. I've already used ChatGPT for a few practical tasks. I've never been able to do that with crypto. The most I got out of crypto was buying some, watching it go up/down in value and then selling.

At that point I think he should've just bald-face deny reality: "nobody is saying we're in trouble! You're cherry-picking our enemies"
I guess Amazon won't need to hire expensive management consultants to figure out who to target for the next round of layoffs.

Re:Microsoft's AI Bing also generated factual errors at launch on Tuesday February 14, 2023 @02:25PM (#34794600)
What the Bard demo did show is that Google must be genuinely panicking if it rushed out a demo like that.
Re:Microsoft's AI Bing also generated factual errors at launch on Tuesday February 14, 2023 @02:24PM (#34794583)
No. Microsoft has proven skills in building enterprise relationships so that CTOs force their companies to use whatever Microsoft builds no matter how crappy.

Yeah but for Bing the fact that it wasn't porn is a step up for their rep.
They're also more intelligent than dogs yet we prefer to eat one.
At least Nadella is an engineer. I'd wager he has a better sense of this than ex-management-consultant Sundar Pichai.
They need to call it ClippyGPT or something. The internet's head would explode.
Nobody is surprised by this. The only difference is that nobody expected more from Bing so they had everything to gain and nothing to lose. At least they're known for something more than porn now, right? This is second mover advantage right here.
I agree with this. All investors may see is a panicking company and a leader who can't inspire or control. Get rid of Sundar. He's a peacetime CEO or a COO.
I imagine it's more likely due to the fact that the US government---both parties---has now basically declared open war on big tech, and the State of the Union was last night.

There are basically only two topics that can unite the parties: China and Big Tech.

They invented transformers which underpins the latest craze.

Leadership and product management failed here but the researchers did their job.

Re:Google's Live from Paris Event Private/Deleted Immediately on Wednesday February 08, 2023 @11:17AM (#34710210)
Schedule a huge announcement after a disruptive technology from a competing company right after mass layoffs when morale is probably at an all time low and everyone is one foot out the door. Clearly good decisions here.
Re:Don’t Teach During Code Reviews on Sunday February 05, 2023 @05:47PM (#34670568)
Like what? What's that Confucius saying: "I hear and I forget, I see and I remember, I do and I understand"? Nothing beats teaching using a real example that the parties are hands on with.

I get what you're saying. Delaying a milestone to have a long convo in a CR is not good prioritization. But as the technical manager it's on you to budget more time for junior devs to land their changes.

Who has ever said that? I've only ever hear management are morons and layoffs are bullshit.

You are not your job.
