I think the argument would just be, “why should the government do this when someone else could be making money off it”
Yes, and you can rebuild them for free
Re:Gemini CLI Tips and Tricks for Agentic Coding on Wednesday November 26, 2025 @02:51PM (#46061617)
Am I stupid? I run /corgi, nothing happens and I don't see a corgi. I have the latest version of the gemini CLI. Or is it just killedbygoogle.com
I absolutely don't know enough to know how legit or ridiculous that idea is, but it's been stuck in my head ever since I read about it here, and it's been fun to mull over.
Re:Pixel 10 Phones on Monday August 25, 2025 @05:18PM (#45019155)
I'm happy with Gemini, I just meant I want a native chatgpt-like service (unlike Siri)
Re:Pixel 10 Phones on Wednesday August 20, 2025 @06:10PM (#44967059)
What do you like about the AI integration? I'm considering leaving iPhone just to have basically native chatGPT integration, assuming gemini works that way, and assuming it can read and write to my calendar and access other personal data.

Maybe it's the norm for tribes that have managed to survive and remain uncontacted in the modern world

The shops I'm talking about have vitamins and OTC drugs
I've always wondered why all the big chains are closing stores, blaming shoplifting, to the point where Belltown no longer has a single pharmacy. But I haven't seen any of the small independant shops/bodegas close, including a small grocery shop right next to the 3rd/bell bus stop. I can't imagine that nobody is shoplifting from those. I'm no expert but it's never added up to me.

It's harder to hide the motor in gymnastics
Re:TypeScript: Branded Types on Wednesday April 24, 2024 @07:46PM (#40151383)
Yes, if you do a good job it removes a lot of mental overhead for building the feature or refactoring it later.

Although if you do a bad job it might add a lot...

Re:Carl Sagan, nuking the moon, and not nuking the moon on Tuesday April 23, 2024 @07:26PM (#40138576)
I agree and even though I usually have a lot of complaints about Stephenson's later books, I just keep reading them for some reason. There are real high and low points. He's the only author who I've read completely and I love to complain about him.
Tulum is a weird example, you can't really even walk from town to the beach. PDC, on the other hand. I agree with your general point.
To segment your customer base, like any company that offers "basic" and "premium" versions of basically the same thing. In this case, you get some people who walk in, order whatever is on the menu in front of them, then are maybe slightly annoyed by the price but will take out their wallet anyway. On the other side, you have people who are willing to put in a little effort to find the coupons, and buy the more basic menu items and buy the McChicken instead of the McCrispy Chicken Deluxe.

My dark dirty secret, as someone who frequents fast food restaurants, is that McDonalds is... actually not that bad, even good, and at the least it is very consistent and good value (if you use the deals, sometimes even without) and the people who think it's disgusting are just engaging in a little classism and can go home and watch Super Size Me again.

I think it's an open secret that McDonalds uses the app to segment customers by price. If you just walk in and order off the normal menu, you pay a lot and they push all the pricier special items on you. If you use the app, you can find surprisingly good deals every time, especially if you can take advantage of 2 for 1s. It's like a totally different menu.
Same, I thought I was terminally online but I've never seen this before.
Re:Why does the moon change size when you snipe it in GTA? on Tuesday November 21, 2023 @06:54PM (#38372403)
The blog post says small, medium, large, this shows about 8 different sizes, which is... even funnier somehow. The designers needed to see all the options in game.
Re:Copilot for Docs on Thursday November 09, 2023 @10:13AM (#38206014)
If you're only using stackoverflow to have someone read the docs to you, then I feel you're missing the point. There is so much between the lines, and the LLM isn't 100% there yet.
Re:Drought in Brazil's Amazon reveals ancient engravings on Wednesday October 25, 2023 @10:15PM (#38020904)
They might not have interbred- dogs existed in the Americas but left very little genetic mark. The chihuahua is a European breed that was bred to look like a dog that existed in Mexico.
Everybody says that transit isn't practical because suburbs exist. But nobody said that cars were impractical before suburbs existed (well probably some people did and it turns out they were right)
When transit is good you can ride it wherever you want to, and you can do it drunk. That's my freedom
Re:Early Europeans Ate Seaweed for Thousands of Years on Friday October 20, 2023 @12:48AM (#37952476)
It's just the name. "sea" and "weed" are both unappetizing. Needs a PR firm to rebrand it.
That's not a useful description. The AI doesn't "know" what it "knows". It's not even filling some gap in its knowledge. It's just putting words together that statistically can go together.
Re:A Mystery Species Was Discovered in Trafficked Pangolin Scales on Wednesday September 27, 2023 @12:35PM (#37677256)
You can't just put wild animals behind a fence and expect them to live happily. Typically animals have had to be domesticated through generations of breeding before they can live in those conditions, and for certain animals, that just doesn't work for some reason. I think I read that the ancestor of the cow was genetically suited for domestication, but buffaloes are not.

This site says that pangolins haven't survived in captivity https://www.ifaw.org/journal/faq-pangolins#:~:text=Pangolins....

I'd compare this to the way that for some reason we just haven't figured out how to farm truffles. Even though they're extremely valuable, we can only find them growing wild.

I strongly recommend "The Hidden Life of Trees". I listened to the audiobook multiple times while hiking/cycling through the woods and it changed the way I will see trees forever.
Re:Ancient Popcorn (2012) on Monday August 28, 2023 @05:30PM (#37300649)
The Aztecs had both chocolate and peanut butter. But it took America to put them together.

But seriously, is a cronut just a doughnut-shaped croissant or does it actually bring something completely new to the table?

Re:AI demand is already shrinking on Wednesday August 23, 2023 @02:39PM (#37240370)
Yeah, if it talked like 4chan and would randomly produce incorrect bomb recipes, people would totally use it more.
Depends on the building, the size and construction of the parking garage, and the amount of power that it is set up to draw. This can be easy or extremely expensive depending on the circumstances.
In the long run, it will benefit everyone else too. But that's without getting into all the ways that gas cars or cars in general are subsidized too.
Re:Teach a man to phish and he’s set for life on Friday August 04, 2023 @02:23PM (#37003797)
I hadn't known that point about sort order. Wait, so suppose a language that uses the same alphabet as English used a reversed alphabet ordering. Would unicode include z-a somewhere else to support that language?
