Re:Price rises for some 16GB Raspberry Pi products
on Tuesday November 03, 2026 @10:36AM (#50353318)
The Raspberry Pi era is well and truly over IMO. Nobody will spec them for new projects at these prices and unless you absolutely need the specific combination of size, power consumption and GPIO there are much better options for almost any application. ESP32s and other dirt-cheap microcontrollers with radios on the low end, new or used mini PCs or even full desktops on the high end. Consider the fact that this new $385 price tag *still* does not include:
* A case
* A cooler
* A power supply
* Storage (SD card or NVMe SSD... the latter of which requires yet another purchase in the form of an NVMe hat)
Stick a fork in it, it's done.

Yeah, it manages to feel terse and yet overly-verbose all at once. Human language without human taste. And like most AI-generated content once you've suffered through a few of these "articles" they all start to look the same... because they are.

We're socializing the costs of everything else. I'd much rather my tax dollars go to pizza delivery (and single-payer healthcare) than lining the pockets of tech monopolists and the military-industrial complex.

on Thursday September 10, 2026 @11:24AM (#49645346)
This couldn't be further from the truth. The indie web was exciting because it was the product of distinct human voices. LLMs only speak in one voice (with subtle differences between the major models but similar "tells"). This is why so many people have such an immediate and visceral negative reaction to AI slop. It is distinctly lacking the human spark and it is uncanny and off-putting in that way.

What I always find interesting is how folks like DHH love to cloak themselves in righteousness saying they're making a place away from "those people" where everyone can feel welcome "regardless of their beliefs." Beliefs like what, DHH? Why not just come out and say what you mean if it's nothing to be ashamed of?
Re:Adults over 65 will outnumber children by 2029
on Friday August 07, 2026 @02:13PM (#49214272)
Or maybe societies could instead make the prospect of having children less onerous? It's not an uncommon story in America that a couple will choose to stay unmarried when having children so that the mother can qualify for benefits like childcare (which, if you haven't had children yourself, is staggeringly expensive when it's available at all).
To think that the solution here is to penalize women even more is insane.

AI industry profits have and will continue to be privatized while the enormous costs of job displacement (to name just one of many negative externalities) will be gleefully socialized. We've seen this film before.

Re:Moving away from Tailwind, and learning to structure my CSS
on Sunday May 17, 2026 @02:43PM (#48171919)
Tailwind is just CSS so there's no lock-in to speak of and no migration necessary. If you had a specific instance where Tailwind wasn't a good fit you can just hand-write as needed.
Sure, if you wanted to stop using Tailwind altogether you would have a lot of rewriting to do but I'm not sure how that's uniquely different or worse than, say, migrating a project from React to Angular.

The BeOS aesthetic has aged so well. I'll always wonder what might've been had they not been deliberately smothered in the crib (or at the very least if Apple had chosen to acquire them).

They're sort of damned if they do and damned if they don't, aren't they? If they make traffic stops for speeding people will moan about how they're just trying to meet quotas or ask why they aren't going after "real criminals."
People just want to drive irresponsibly and they will invent any reason to justify why they're the victim, actually.

Late-stage capitalism in action. We have companies that are so insanely rich (despite losing equally insane amounts of money) that they can single-handedly corner worldwide markets for critical components in a brazen attempt to hurt the competition, and nobody will do a single thing about it.
