Re:Telnet BBS Guide on Thursday October 08, 2026 @09:08AM (#50005392)
Reminds me that I wanted to expose an old T.A.G. BBS to the web as a nostalgia project recently. Feel free to check it out, create an account, play some LORD, Trade Wars 2002, Usurper, Messages, etc. I just wanted the experience to live on as I remember it with nothing more than a modern web browser required. https://nightwatchbbs.com
Re:Are women better than men at endurance running? on Wednesday September 09, 2026 @08:08AM (#49625185)
Depends on the definition of "better".

"At the moment we are speculating".. nothing more to see here.

Re:Run OpenBSD on DigitalOcean for $4/month on Wednesday August 26, 2026 @09:10AM (#49448511)
Sounds like a you problem I've had multiple FreeBSD systems on vultr for over a decade and never had sshd issues. Of course I also use an alternate port and active fail2ban to block those who insist on any brute force for any protocol. 128K active blocks currently.
Re:Run OpenBSD on DigitalOcean for $4/month on Wednesday August 26, 2026 @09:06AM (#49448448)
Have been using vultr with very good stability for BSD systems since 2015 or so, highly recommend.

Re:FCC finally starts tackling America's robocall scourge on Wednesday April 14, 2021 @08:30AM (#26806147)
I met Ajit shortly after he started in his role. I specifically told him how we can track and trace back these robocalls via SS7 (at least once they hit the PSTN - SIP ingress even easier to track back to the trunks they originate), and I even had proof of concept code and examples. He seemed really excited, then did nothing. No follow-up, etc. It would only work if mandated by the FCC because there is no financial incentive for the telcos to do it.
Re:Route Leak Impacting Cloudflare on Monday June 24, 2019 @07:51AM (#20262546)
We'll get right on that after everyone has IPv6 deployed.
Re:MAC address age tracking on Tuesday October 02, 2018 @08:52AM (#18121045)
You are correct. The date of allocation doesn't indicate the age of the device, just the age of the allocation to said company.
Re:MAC address age tracking on Tuesday October 02, 2018 @07:28AM (#18120523)
Neat, I shall incorporate this into my little side project that I did for fun: https://macaddresslookup.info
Re:How I Fail – Ian Goodfellow on Sunday May 06, 2018 @10:03AM (#17006441)
... That's how he fails.
Well then, if everyone else is doing it!.. I don't buy it. People don't have friends based off of if they're on social media, or play specific video games. If they do, you don't want them as friends. It's the same reason I don't let my 3rd grade boy play FPS games even though he REAAALY wants to, and all his friends do. An 8 year old should not be running around in a realistic game shooting people. When his brain is more mature, he will have plenty of time to play such games.
My middle school aged daughter wanted this installed on her phone the other day. I said no way. The last thing she needs her electronic devices doing is serving up tinder for kids, leaving her obsessing over popularity contests, or another avenue for anonymous bullying.
Yes, this is probably a better example..
If he actually hacked people with his code, then then they have a case. If not, then he's in a similar boat to gun manufacturers in my opinion.
Re:Anonymity and Abuse Reports on Sunday May 07, 2017 @05:46PM (#14287867)
Ignore was perhaps a poor word choice. They do get responded to, but the response results in no action being taken to stop the abuse, which is what I meant by ignore.
Re:Anonymity and Abuse Reports on Sunday May 07, 2017 @05:18PM (#14287731)
Cloudflare has always sidestepped their responsibility by claiming not to be a "hosting provider". They claim not to host the content, so they claim not to be able to stop any abuse related to it. If the DNS points to cloudflare, if the content to the rest of the world looks and feels like it comes from Cloudflare, then you're responsible for the content whether you consider yourself a "hosting provider" or not. Providing bullet-proof hosting to scammers, spammers, etc. and then ignoring abuse reports and throwing their hands up in the air because it's not their content has left a pretty terrible impression of Cloudflare to me.

Re:The Daily DDoS: Ten Days of Massive Attacks on Friday December 02, 2016 @01:48PM (#13091175)
I don't think you've tried to report abuse to CloudFlare before, have you? Your analogy is actually further off. CloudFlare IS aware of the abuse and illegal activity. They DO condone it through their inaction. They claim since they aren't the actual source of the content, they don't have to do anything about it, effectively letting the criminals and scammers continue their abuse behind their shield. They have all the capability in the world to respond to valid abuse complaints, and actually stop the abuse, but they actively choose to allow it.
Re:The Daily DDoS: Ten Days of Massive Attacks on Friday December 02, 2016 @01:38PM (#13091081)
Known abuse happens through their service, and they shield the offending party. You like all of those Viagra spam emails? You like the scams run against vulnerable people? That's not net neutrality. If CloudFlare was an above-board player they would take steps to stop this abuse traversing their services when they are brought to their attention. Instead, they know about the abuse and give the big middle finger to those who report it to them.
Re:The Daily DDoS: Ten Days of Massive Attacks on Friday December 02, 2016 @09:54AM (#13088968)
I agree with you. CloudFlare is infuriating to attempt to work with if you're trying to stop abuse. It remains a haven for bullet-proof hosting for all sorts of abuse. Need to run a spam campaign? Put your target site behind CloudFlare, they're happy to help you keep it up and running!
Re:Facebook will force advertising on ad-blocking users on Tuesday August 09, 2016 @10:44AM (#12254795)
Adblock Plus with Element Hiding Helper is pretty damn hard to defeat. Embedding the ads won't help.

Re:Reimagining the future of routers on Wednesday June 08, 2016 @07:06AM (#11861399)
iBGP happens at L3, how is that going to stop a L2 loop exactly? There are plenty of alternatives to using spanning tree in a L2 network these days, you just have to have the right equipment to support it. There's TRILL, cisco's FabricPath (L2MP for everyone else).

Re:Swiss ISP hijacks IP prefixes of high profile networks on Friday April 22, 2016 @08:35PM (#11553513)
Almost always someone who doesn't understand BGP making a mistake in conjunction with an upstream provider that is incompetent enough to not have prefix filtering in place to avoid putting bad prefixes out into the global routing table. Though, sometimes it certainly is malicious, and impossible to protect against. If someone hijacks your prefix, you basically have to start trying to call all of the upstream networks to see if they can fix it.
Uhh.. not the best name choice in my opinion.

CoughDigitalOceanCough
This was in my opinion one of the best talks at defcon a few years back. I replicated this with some CDN domains, and was amazed at the number of bits that were being flipped out there that drove traffic to my test systems. It would have been very easy to serve up content that could have caused a lot of problems.
