Re:Comparative advantage and when to blow up your island on Tuesday September 15, 2020 @01:13PM (#24483752)
My field is propped up by various governments. My paycheck is a combination of sales, bailouts, and loan forgiveness. I also make lots of money.

Should I be in favor of cronyism?

I actually take the other side despite getting paid by them. These companies/Management made terrible decisions and continue to make terrible decisions. Instead of selling and replacing managers we are burdened with zombie companies.

>large numbers of N95 masks

Certifications take time, masks are simple, testing takes time.

This is a government problem, not a manufacturing problem.

Re:Schools Should Exclusively Use Free Software (2014) on Tuesday September 15, 2020 @11:02AM (#24481958)
I think consumers and companies should go their best to shift to them too.

Most of our digital world is built on free code not proprietary crap.

I'm going to name drop things I don't know about and might be irrelevant

Data/network/transport/session layer can be detected through TCP?

So you need to fudge a few digits somehow at your router.

Re:YouTube launches TikTok competitor, Shorts on Tuesday September 15, 2020 @09:47AM (#24481132)
After Google screwed up my music transfer from Google Play to YouTube Music, I'm not using any new Google services.

And it's not like there is any customer service to fix their own problems.

Re:Tracking users via CSS on Tuesday September 15, 2020 @08:16AM (#24480332)
I'm a believer that these kind of issues should be solved at the consumers end.

I haven't built a web browser, but I built a bot and it's somewhat doable to avoid getting tracked.

A browser could feed a fake user agent and format the browser to be the correct size. After that I believe it's only IP address and cookies which are easy enough to be blocked.

It even defeats the CSS tracking mentioned. "Oh someone downloaded image 6374tracker.png, but they were from UAE and are using Firefox" and are never seen again.

My only weakness on this subject is the low level headers, anyone familiar?

Ahh that was it.

But yep that's how we bypassed it.

I think I bought 6 songs before I found a better alternative. Reminds me how I had 1 iphone (6) and would never get one again.

I agree, but if you are a fortune 500 company, you don't quite get to say "no".

You need to provide it to users anyway.

I wonder if this is the end goal.

If they are regulated, they can expect permanent life at the expense of taxpayers subsidizing the company.

Be extremely anti consumer and anti developer, advertise to make up for the negative behavior and loss of users.

Wait until you download all the same apps and get 0 privacy benefits.

The problem is barely Google. The problem are the Apps you download and giving full permissions.

>Apple uses a lot of customer hostile behaviors nowadays

Nowadays? Apple has been doing anti-consumer behavior for multiple decades. I remember only allowing purchased itunes music being exported in their specific format.

You'd have to burn them to a CD and rip it back to a useable format.

This isn't new, any educated consumer is well aware of how Apple plays.

Re:Governments should adopt and invest in FOSS on Sunday September 13, 2020 @04:57PM (#24463898)
No. With government the stakes are significantly higher as governments don't go out of business.
This is important because Tesla is a consumer facing company.
>SpaceX isn't going to go public, possibly because it's a very long-term endeavor, and his goal is to go to Mars, not make huge profits.

I think it's due to the nature of being a military contractor.

Being public means that Americans can be upset our taxes are going to a billionaire. But private, there's deniability of how much money is coming from taxpayers.

Definition of war has changed since nukes and the cold war.
Re:China would rather see TikTok U.S. close than a forced sale on Saturday September 12, 2020 @09:41AM (#24452346)
The network effect is a billion dollar value.
Re:China would rather see TikTok U.S. close than a forced sale on Saturday September 12, 2020 @09:41AM (#24452339)
This is probably true for all billion dollar tech companies.

Imagine how much dirt Facebook, Apple and Microsoft has.

Worse GM may be a zombie company.

Your taxes will always be supporting their business.

Re:Why ‘Civilization’ is a political masterpiece on Thursday September 10, 2020 @08:11AM (#24431523)
I could have taken care of genghis and stopped. I could have left Gandhi alone.

I take responsibility.

Re:Traits of good remote leaders on Thursday September 10, 2020 @08:01AM (#24431443)
Meh, I have that in person charisma. I get a bit panicky online because you can't see someone's face.

I don't know if I'm talking too much or if they are bored. Online I'm quick/short.

That said, I enjoy being a tech guy over a leader. I tried leadership in done personal business and I don't like playing politics or psychology tricks.

Re:Why ‘Civilization’ is a political masterpiece on Thursday September 10, 2020 @07:56AM (#24431405)
My biggest shock with Civ was funding out that I was a military dictator at heart.

I started with hope of a cultural victory. I gave away technology and trade at a disadvantage to keep aggressive allies on my side.

Then genghis khan attacks me unprovoked despite previously good relations.

He sacked a city and I decided he needed to be completely removed from the game for peace. So after stabilizing, I built up a huge military and defeated him.

But now I had a huge military draining my resources. And alexander was pretty aggressive. Before you knew it, my wife was begging me not to attack the last survivor, Gandhi. Which I defeated and achieved world domination.

I was literally horrified at myself.

Re:Why ‘Civilization’ is a political masterpiece on Thursday September 10, 2020 @07:46AM (#24431342)
Civ5 didn't allow unit stacking which left artillery vulnerable. I couldn't get into it.

Re:How we learnt to stop worrying and love web scraping on Thursday September 10, 2020 @07:20AM (#24431179)
Theoretically.

Think about websites that have every reason to stop you from scraping.

It's not reasonable to disect their huge obfuscated js code. So headless doesn't really work.

Re:How we learnt to stop worrying and love web scraping on Wednesday September 09, 2020 @08:52PM (#24427764)
I love this. I might try it. It doesn't scale, but that's okay for my project.
This is why you should avoid Apple entirely. They can do this to you, your company, your apps.

I'm a big fan of FOSS as much as possible.

"The original poster of the thread had reportedly spent more than ten hours disassembling their Model Y to correct poor panel fitment when they came across a large chunk of metal secured with green tape and a small strap."

Bad quality followed up by bad quality.

When I benchmarked Tesla years ago, the exterior(and interior) panels were awful in their Autoshow build. I'm genuinely surprised they haven't fixed it yet.

I gave them a pass at the time because everything was new and in low runs. Now with 500k/yr, there's really no excuse.

Tesla is the Apple of Automotive.

Re:How we learnt to stop worrying and love web scraping on Wednesday September 09, 2020 @11:28AM (#24422088)
I failed a webscraping project due to strong anti bot detection.

They checked for bots through useragent/screen size, maybe mouse movements, trends in searches (same area code), etc... (Can they really detect me through my internet connection headers, despite proxies?)

It was impossible for me to scrape, they won.

Re:Toys from Trash on Wednesday September 09, 2020 @08:44AM (#24420360)
I'm looking to make kids toys from United States recycling products since they are being moved to landfills. Almost no progress so far, my 400 level polymer chemistry book only has 2 paragraphs on recycling.

So far I'm trying to figure out mechanical solutions. Thinking lots of boxes so kids can make forts.

Hard website to use, unfortunate.

Re:New things in Android 11 on Tuesday September 08, 2020 @03:21PM (#24411969)
I wonder if you are used to animations hiding the loading time for you. I've never noticed a slow android outside 100$ crap, but I did notice how slow the iphone animations are
Re:New things in Android 11 on Tuesday September 08, 2020 @03:18PM (#24411933)
It's impossible to know since Apple users are extremely subjective.

It's better to just avoid them IMO. It's well documented the anti-consumer policies done by Apple. It's easy to see them poor money into massive advertising campaigns.

Consider the highly likely situation where someone bought a multi hundred dollar device, is disappointed, and need to justify it to themselves.
