This is my issue too!

Hey! What does the freelance QA role look like?

Don’t have a phone but want to write code interfacing with a paid LLM? How often does that happen?
Re:UK will give sovereignty of Chagos Islands to Mauritius on Thursday October 03, 2024 @10:39AM (#41731224)
Which is owned by a hedge fund, and thankfully not part of this deal (so it's not at risk!)
Re:UK will give sovereignty of Chagos Islands to Mauritius on Thursday October 03, 2024 @10:38AM (#41731218)
I believe we will keep the port there with the US?
$2000 is an absurdly small bounty here - you should up that
Re:We're approaching LLM prompt evaluation at QA.tech on Tuesday September 17, 2024 @05:16AM (#41565879)
Nice work! Is there any risk that an evaluation and tweaking cycle accidentally changes the original test requirements over time?

220m users. Let’s imagine 50m are streaming concurrently. That’s 100TB an hour in logs lol. They could be storing an entire petabyte of logs a day. My friend did some data center stuff for the large hadron collider and wasn’t hitting these data ingestion states, and these are just to record me binging the office.

Responses like this from C-levels in crypto make me glad I moved from the space after 4 years. Everyone is so egotistical. Blaming it on mental patterns of the employees without accepting it could be some really shitty management from your colleagues instead is toxic. Have a good hard look at the people named in this petition.

FWIW when I was doing some banking courses, as I was working in DeFi and wanted to know more about CeFi, they have synthetic assets too. Which are derivatives. In fact in the Big Short movie I'm 100% they call derivates synthetics!

Can you share the order of magnitude we're talking about here?
Re:Musk SEC Filing on Thursday June 09, 2022 @01:03PM (#31683799)
What nonsense. How many business owners in the US immigrated with basically zero and made > $1m? How many startup founders have come from disadvantaged backgrounds and exited/got acquired? How many first-gen college grads got into good schools and ended up firmly in the upper-middle class (US based, that is?). It's far easier to 1000x when you have little than when you have a good amount. Just look at the number of millionaires compared to billionaires.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll check it out!

I absolutely am! I'll check it out, thanks :)

Is it gatekeeping? They hire so many junior devs, do you not think it’d be possible to strip the team down by hiring far more capable engineers? Would Google crumble if they only hired senior devs like Netflix? I’m convinced they hire so many purely because they have the money and managers want bigger teams to go up the managerial track.

Signaling is definitely a thing!
Re:The human toll of Fallout 76’s launch on Wednesday June 08, 2022 @05:26PM (#31674463)
Video game devs aren’t paid ‘very poorly’, they’re still comfortably above a countries median, they’re just lower than roles requiring a similar skill. My friend is a game dev at Epic and loves it, FWIW. He doesn’t give a shit about money if he can pay his mortgage, cover his wife and child, splash on toys, and save a bit.
Re:Dhall: A Gateway Drug to Haskell on Tuesday June 07, 2022 @04:52PM (#31659915)
I've worked with Haskell professionally. It was... interesting. I'd rather be in shape than deal with Stack/Cabal/Nix again. If anyone reading this is wondering if they should learn Haskell - wonder if your time could be better spent having a fun and active life instead lol.
Re:Tell HN: Read up on your GitHub Support SLA on Tuesday June 07, 2022 @02:30PM (#31658320)
Just joined a company that self hosts Gitlab (and everything else, there's zero cloud) but is 100% remote. So far everything has been seamless and there's a large enough infra team to solve these issues if they arise :)
I have just been given an M1 Max with 64GB of RAM from work and it has to be the most insane laptop I've used. I have a very big smile on my face when I build stuff.
Re:Musk SEC Filing on Monday June 06, 2022 @12:27PM (#31642492)
I just wanted to write code that ends up in space :)

I wasn't aware he could vote for my political party of choice in England!

Re:Musk SEC Filing on Monday June 06, 2022 @10:24AM (#31640899)
I'm the OP of the comment this thread was responding too, talking about how I dislike Musk, but I'd still say he was the driving force of Tesla in that it was a close-to-bankrupt company that is unrecognisable of the company you see today. Same with the whole idea he's only rich because his dad is - Zip2 and Paypal were huge acquisitions that dwarf his fathers net worth back then, and having wealth is in no way a guarantee you'll > 1000x that amount.
Re:Musk SEC Filing on Monday June 06, 2022 @09:48AM (#31640411)
It’s absolutely appropriate as he’s a leader in our industry. And on that note I’d no longer apply for a role at Tesla based on his very annoying behavior.
Re:Musk SEC Filing on Monday June 06, 2022 @09:47AM (#31640386)
I used to like Musk but honestly I’m so sick of him nowadays. His constant need for media attention, his shit posting on Twitter, his backwards attitude to remote work, damn he annoys me.

Which is a real shame because I’d have loved to work for Space X but what a way to put people off.

Doesn't matter if someone does altruism for selfish reasons - some people argue all altruism is inherently selfish - as long as the actions happen. And with SBF they do.
Ah I've been deep in Effective Altruism for a while and have a fairly reductionist view on these topics now. I also happen to know SBF donates to good causes, along with how those good causes operate. If that money has been made by arbitrage between exchanges & liquidating gamblers resulting in literally > tens of thousands of lives saved, I'm okay with that :)
Yes, but if you look at it through a pair of utilitarian glasses this is a net good for the world. He made most of his money arbitraging the difference in price of bitcoin between Western and Asian exchanges, to be fair. Notably he's the only person I've ever heard of who said "I want to be a billionaire to Earn to Give" and actually become one within two years! He was at Jane Street prior to his crypto work.
