that sounds like a win-win-win-win: instant huge cut to carbon emissions, less trees cut down, demand released on diesel market, I get less spam
Click here for this one weird trick…

But honestly, the headlines there are refreshing

There'd be enough to do that if the USPS wasn't busy burning thousands of tons of Diesel fuel to haul Verizon and Citi card advertisements to everyone else.

Re:The case of the 9 bit AES key on Thursday October 29, 2026 @05:02PM (#50295911)
String.getBytes(UTF-8) is an incredibly common way to kneecap yourself

always Base64Encode/Decode!

Don't worry, thanks to the Democrats, then affirmed by the Republicans, your car will soon dial them directly!
I wouldn't complain about this, I'd turn it into a business opportunity and sell the leads somewhere
Re:A farewell to Arc browser on Friday October 23, 2026 @12:36PM (#50211686)
I wanted to use Arc. I downloaded it and it wanted me to sign up for an account. So I uninstalled.

Dumb. Browsers, Cars, TVs, should not require accounts.

If innocent, the prosecutors need to fail jail time. This is absurd.

I hope she wins, sues the state, sues the individuals, sues everyone, and retires on a private island.

Re:Apple broke an essential presentation feature of iPads on Tuesday October 20, 2026 @12:20PM (#50168727)
iPads are something you give to a kid to keep them entertained. You should not make any production system wholly dependent on a platform you don't have root access to without some sort of backup or egress plan.
The same rules from 10-20 years ago:

have an architecture

Be consistent. All parts of the app should look like all other parts of the app.

Dont allow clever code

break things into modules

do true unit testing, meaning test the smallest unit of code possible.

Re:Claude reveals ECDSA curve origins on Friday October 16, 2026 @11:45PM (#50127719)
Dont tell that to the EDDSA people... they've tried to make their mark in history riding on "p256 is a government plant"
what creeps are actually buying these things

Our corporate policy doesn't allow personal phones to be linked to corp accounts, for obvious reasons. We have no idea what kind of security your personal phone number has setup, nor do we compensate employees for their personal phones, nor do we want corporate communications happening on your personal device (work/life separation).

If the vendor is unable to comply, all we're using them for is email. Time to look elsewhere.

Re:Creating a Garmin "MCP" on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @01:17AM (#50082701)
doesn’t Garmin support completely local synchronization with their devices still?
Re:Show HN: How Random Are You? on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @11:04PM (#50081886)
I'm reminded of the Dilbert Comic with Accounting's Random Generator.

I tried it. Several 9s later, it figured me out.

Well, there's your problem.

Re:NYC's "Click to Cancel" rule is now in effect on Monday October 12, 2026 @09:50AM (#50056467)
Passing this at the city level is dumb. It's political showboating. If you're reading this you are educated enough to realize it's practically impossible to enforce.

Re:US Suspends Visa Program for Tech Firms Including Microsoft on Thursday October 08, 2026 @01:13PM (#50008654)
>but I’ve never seen it to be true.

it's been true 100% of the places I've worked. I can't name names on the internet.

Re:US Suspends Visa Program for Tech Firms Including Microsoft on Thursday October 08, 2026 @12:16PM (#50007723)
I know the administration is controversial, but this is the correct thing to do for a lot of reasons.

The biggest one is the program itself is racist as hell. Microsoft is literally bringing in foreigners, paying them much less to do the same damn job.

Re:Mosquitoes Are a Choice on Monday October 05, 2026 @11:21AM (#49966021)
>It shouldn’t have to take fifteen years to deploy effective products that can save lives.

I completely disagree. This is a reasonable and responsible timeline to look for unintended consequences. Some things, you simply cannot undo.

What if the bacteria (somehow) jumped to monarch butterflies and killed them off? Controlled releases and multi-year environmental studies are the correct and responsible course of action. In fact, when the injected insects are released into an area, the entire thing should be monitored carefully, as each ecosystem might respond differently.

All of that being said, excited to see this adopted more broadly. It's time these fuckwit insects die.

Re:Ban Flock Act Proposed in the US Sente on Sunday October 04, 2026 @05:11PM (#49957925)
Thats exactly right. Flock cameras allegedly listen for these sensors.
Property taxes are the worst kind of taxes. Nobody should be fined just for owning something. Once it's taxed once, it should never be taxed again.
Re:Car is a smartphone on wheels. Here's who's listening on Sunday October 04, 2026 @01:48PM (#49956105)
It doesn't need to be or should be though.
Re:So You Think You Could Be an Electrician? on Sunday October 04, 2026 @12:51AM (#49950739)
The article literally admits is first point was misleading.

My carpenter buddy sets his own schedule, spends his time pulling his camper, works extra when he wants to, floats in and out of his union asks (exploiting their rigidity).

He’s been at it for years, so he’s a qualified instructor for anything he can get his hands on, even esoteric stuff like pouring concrete for nuclear facilities.

His job is hardly comparable to an Amazon driver, like this article conflates. Bro makes more than an equiv exper and age software dev, but with no glass ceiling.

Re:Ban Flock Act Proposed in the US Sente on Saturday October 03, 2026 @09:42PM (#49949762)
What about reading (federally mandated, unencrypted) TPMS sensors
Re:California AB 2047 (3D Printer law) enacted on Friday October 02, 2026 @07:00PM (#49939633)

This is so obnoxiously impossible.
