yes -- at the height in the late 90s, i made a friend named chucky while playing quake online. he was just a terrific guy, older than me but treated me with respect, we would hang out IRL and he would hook me up with games after he had finished them. later he went offline and i found out he had been the leader of RISCISO and had disappeared during a criminal prosecution. hope things are well with you sean
Re:Paris prosecutors raid France offices of Elon Musk's X on Wednesday February 04, 2026 @07:13AM (#46884911)
Actually research shows people regularly overestimate how effective deterrence-based punishment is. Particularly for children and teenagers. How many 14-year-olds do you really think are getting prosecuted and sent to jail for asking Grok to generate a nude of their classmate..? How many 14-year-olds are giving serious thought about their long-term future in the moment they are typing a prompt into to Twitter..? Your argument is akin to suggesting that carmakers should sell teenagers cars to drive, because the teenager can be punished if they cause an accident.
Re:The End of Handwriting on Wednesday August 20, 2025 @07:29AM (#44960860)
that may be the case for your particular writing style, but it is not universal.

i have a mild orthopaedic problem, and i found, in my twenties after years of struggling with disposable pens, that a fountain pen allowed me to write more lightly and fluidly on the page with the result that my words per minute more than doubled. my writing is still ugly, but it is vastly faster and a bit more legible.

fountain pens are not only for "decorative stuff" but have actual functional advantages due to their mechanical dynamics

no, when hitting Command-? the help menu bar opens a search box that takes you directly to matching menu items -- like Spotlight for menu items. you can activate them directly from the search box. no learning involved

What? Per Wikipedia: "With over 230 billion ARM chips produced, as of 2022, ARM is the most widely used family of instruction set architectures."[1] [1] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ARM_architecture_family
Re:Cold brew coffee in 3 minutes using acoustic cavitation on Wednesday May 08, 2024 @02:20AM (#40294904)
Would you say that a discussion about GPU densities was an "extreme form of processing hipsterism"? Unless your contention is that there is no observable difference between the types of drinks described by OP, this comment is an embarrassing ad hominem and has no place here
Re:Toyota CEO talks about why he isn’t all-in on EVs on Sunday October 02, 2022 @09:30PM (#33062388)
This is a very narrow view that probably stems from the fact that people in the US tend to think only of Teslas and other luxury cars when they think of EVs. Low end EVs, of kinds that either wouldn't obtain road safety approval in the US or appeal to consumers who are looking for large comfort cars, are rapidly emerging and are poised to dominate China, India and other non-Western countries in coming years
Re:1922: The year that made modernism on Saturday February 05, 2022 @06:37PM (#30227543)
You talk about "what you consume". Censorship is about defining what others are allowed to consume, which is quite different.
Moreover, it appears to be an optional way of allowing returned travellers to serve out their quarantine period at a place of their choosing rather than in a state-run, guarded, hotel room, or without regular police visits to their home. I would have thought HN would regard this as a sensible and efficient use of technology.
If your only examples are North America and China, it may feel like there is a direct tradeoff between safety and privacy. But that would be a false analysis: most Western nations have far lower rates of violent crime than the United States, without the need for omnipresent surveillance.
